midnightoil's Journal, 13 May 2015

Today I stood on the scale and realized that I am 100 pounds less than I was at my highest weight (about 8 months ago before I started trying to lose weight). Wow, about 30 percent of my body weight just vanished. Last week I was a guest speaker for others who are in the VA weight management program that I completed last December. Speaking in front of a large audience or classroom was never a problem for me because I used to be an instructor for the Space Program (after my injury). Many in the class were inspired and impressed that I could lose 90 pounds within 7 months without the weight surgery. There were other guest speakers like myself who lost a lot of weight and we each had our own story on how we overcame the changes we made in our life style. One thing that all the guest speakers had in common was that we all stopped drinking diet soda and artificial sweeteners. I know that a lot of people still think it helps them lose weight but what they don't understand is how much more hungry they become after ingesting artificial sweeteners. Why? well our bodies were not designed for it. If our ancestors for the last few thousand years were drinking diet soda then our bodies would evolve to find a way to safely adjust to nutrasweet or splenda. We clean our external bodies by bathing/showering in water. We also clean our insides or impurities with water. Water allows us to clean the impurities out with urine and sweat. Now would you bath or shower in diet soda?

I agree MO. It's tough, but they have got to go as far as my experience. I have eliminated the soda influence & am working on the Sweet & Low. I use it for tea, when I drink it. Otherwise it's H2O brother. And even when you make your mind up to cut them out, you have to contend with all the marketing & products everywhere. It may not work for everybody, but it has definitely helped me.

The MOVE weight management program is designed for Veterans to live a more healthy lifestyle which will prevent medical cost and on going health issues from obesity. Now, there are many versions of the program but what I had was the 8 week intensive classroom instruction that was taught by weight loss professionals (Doctors - bariactric, Psychologist - motivation, Dieticians/Nutritionist - food managment, Exercise professionals. The program at first is designed to meet the needs of each Veteran because we all have different needs. Some use a HFLC diet but I used a High Protien, High Fiber, Low Sugar diet. I learned so much in the 8 weeks and most of all I learned how to live without being hungry all the time. I went to the source and found out what made me always hungry. I realize that some people go on diets and never can stay on them because they are always hungry. Sure, everyone can stay hungry for a few months but eventually the hunger always wins.

When I first started Feb. 2014 I was 280 pounds. Between Feb. and May I only lost 3 pounds. When I decided to finally cut out all sodas, sweet tea, any sugary drinks is when the weight really started to come off. And I didn't even drink that much, but it made a HUGE difference. Since then I have lost 132 pounds. With out weight loss surgery. And I am now 1 year soda free! Sodas are a poison that people put in their bodies.

What a milestone. But you are so nonchalant about the whole thing. If you aren't going to do it, let me scream for you - CELEBRATE!

You are inspirational! And I will start using sugar instead of artificial. I have used it for 40 plus years, time to change isn't it. I only use it in my hot tea in the mornings, so shouldn't be too difficult.

Thank you so much for your testimony. You are an inspiration to all of us and certainly make a case against artificial sweeteners! Please write us often and share your wisdom. We so need this kind of information.

First Congratulations on the 100 pound loss. What a great post! I can relate to the sweetener because once I quit using sweetener in my coffee and tea I started losing weight on my plan. I stalled last summer using sweetener in my iced tea, I had switched to black coffee early on and drink iced tea mainly in the summer. . I actually started using a bit of sugar instead (I like a bit of sweet in my tea, I have not managed to drink it with none yet) and the weight started dropping again. I thought about that much later reading posts here re: sweetener.
