Hello! My name is Deborah but my friends call me Deb! I am happily married with 3 sons & 2 daughters. My goal is to lose weight & get healthy. My plan: 1) healthy diet, 2) more exercise, 3) better sleep, and 4) reduced stress. Somebody said that. It's good!

In January 2013, I weighed 232 lbs and I was diagnosed with diabetes. I began watching my carbs and calories, eating a low fat diet, and avoiding sugar. I began to walk more, starting from 300 steps a day and slowly increased it to 5000 steps a day (2.5 miles). When I joined this website I weighed 202 lbs. What a great site, with such encouraging members! After losing 44 pounds, my A1C was 5 (normal) and my doctor told me that I can stop taking the diabetic pills and cut my cholesterol pills in half! I am so happy and I continue to eat healthy and exercise daily so that I will not have to go back on the Metformin.

Surprise: weigh 186 lbs ✔ Doctor stopped my diabetic pills! BMI 34.02
mini goal: weigh 175 lbs ✔ Weight before I had children, BMI 32.0
Surprise: weigh 171 lbs ✔ Doctor stopped my cholesterol pills! BMI 31.27
2nd goal: weigh 164 lbs ✔ Slightly Overweight now, BMI 29.99
mini goal: weigh 150 lbs ✔ Weight on my driver's license! BMI 27.43
mini goal: weigh 143 lbs ✔ A random number, BMI 26.15
The GOAL: weigh 136 lbs - Normal or Healthy weight, BMI will change to 24.87

special diets don't work
In my weight loss plan, I quit sugar, soda pop, and diet soda. The next was to limit rice to 3/4 cup, then 1/3 cup, then stopped it. I limited pasta until I stopped eating it. I switched from french fries to a baked potato, then half of a baked potato, then 3 baked potato wedges, then 2, then 1, then stopped eating potatoes. I switched from any bread that was on sale to 2 slices of 100% whole wheat bread, then one slice of bread, then started eating one low carb tortilla. Do things gradually.

Be careful PLEASE!!!
Good advice, Jeri. Some medications cannot be stopped unless the doctor reduces your dosage very slowly. I'm sorry you lost friends who did not take their medications.

kitchen question, totally off topic
Finally I got that unopened bag of buttermilk pancake mix down from the cabinet above the stove. It was expired. I think my husband bought it in 2009 and had it in the basement pantry until our youngest daughter moved it to the kitchen to use it, but she never did. It weighed 10 pounds (4.53 kg). I think I burned a little calories lifting that bag and throwing it in the trash can. Hate to throw away food, but it was expired!
