Hello! My name is Deborah but my friends call me Deb! I am happily married with 3 sons & 2 daughters. My goal is to lose weight & get healthy. My plan: 1) healthy diet, 2) more exercise, 3) better sleep, and 4) reduced stress. Somebody said that. It's good!

In January 2013, I weighed 232 lbs and I was diagnosed with diabetes. I began watching my carbs and calories, eating a low fat diet, and avoiding sugar. I began to walk more, starting from 300 steps a day and slowly increased it to 5000 steps a day (2.5 miles). When I joined this website I weighed 202 lbs. What a great site, with such encouraging members! After losing 44 pounds, my A1C was 5 (normal) and my doctor told me that I can stop taking the diabetic pills and cut my cholesterol pills in half! I am so happy and I continue to eat healthy and exercise daily so that I will not have to go back on the Metformin.

Struggle: weigh 225 lbs ✔ Stopped eating desserts, BMI 41.1
1st goal: weigh 218 lbs ✔ Obese now, BMI 39.9
mini goal: weigh 197 lbs ✔ Stopped drinking diet soda, BMI 36.0
mini goal: weigh 188 lbs ✔ Why did I pick that number? BMI 34.4
Surprise: weigh 186 lbs ✔ Doctor stopped my diabetic pills! BMI 34.0
mini goal: weigh 175 lbs ✔ Weight before I had children, BMI 32.0
Surprise: weigh 171 lbs ✔ Doctor stopped my cholesterol pills! BMI 31.3
2nd goal: weigh 164 lbs ✔ my BMI is 30 now!
mini goal: weigh 163 lbs ✔ my BMI changed to Slightly Overweight
mini goal: weigh 150 lbs - Random number that just seems good
mini goal: weigh 143 lbs - Another random number
The GOAL: weigh 136 lbs - my BMI changes to Normal or Healthy weight

When you are at MY FATSECRET, on the right side under MY DIET CALENDAR, click on "Calendar" to see your Food and Exercise on the same page. Look at your Food calories on the left and your Exercise calories on the right. The last column says Net (kcal), the difference between the two numbers. Green arrows going down mean you have exercised more than you ate! The higher the Net (kcal), the more weight you are losing. You can also click on the View Diet Calendar link in your profile to see how you are doing.

When you are at MY FATSECRET, on the right side under MY DIET CALENDAR, click on "Food" to log your foods in My Food Diary then click on "Exercise" to log your exercise in My Exercise Diary. Good luck!

Coffee increases Blood Sugar?
This topic has more than one page, so be sure to click over to the other page to read the other replies. My mother never let me drink coffee when I was a girl, and I started drinking it in college. Since it is a heart stimulant, I'm being cautious in my consumption, maybe three cups a month.

Brewed coffee has a healthy effect by increasing your antioxidants, but it can raise blood sugar. Decaffeinated coffee can raise LDL cholesterol which you don't want. A new study says high levels of caffeine may stimulate calcium excretion, so it is not good for your bones. If you have high blood pressure, caffeine can make it worse.
