I'm a 54 year old mother of 2 boys who both are in college -- one living away from home & one who returned home this year to finish his college degree. I was overweight as a child and struggled with binging in my twenties after my sister passed away. After getting married & having my sons, my eating and weight seemed to stabilize until recently. I started craving sugar horribly & began eating for emotional reasons, possibly in response to menopause, being an empty nester & having my Mom diagnosed with Alzheimer's. I've been working to find a way to live and eat healthfully. This journey has lead me through many different ways of eating, but what's working best currently is eating mindfully, paleo/primal and staying gluten, lactose & sugar aware. I had been at about 120 pounds for years, give or take a few, but seem to be averaging closer to 125 now. I'd love to get back to 120, but am realizing that as I age, that may be unrealistic. I'm an avid tennis player & workout most days that I don't play tennis. I know it's weird but I actually like to workout. I'm so happy to have found great support here on fatsecret.

Sabotaged by sweets
I am right with all of you with my sugar and sweetness addiction. I try to stay away from all added sugar, and keep it out of my house as much as possible. But, I still find it hard when out to dinner and others order dessert or watching others eat dessert at gatherings. How do you all handle those times?

Self control
I have to share an article I read quite some time ago as I too struggle with my trigger foods -- processed, added sugar -- and have tried many times to eat it in moderation unsuccessfully. I always just want more & have come to realize that one bite of sugar is too much for me and 100 bites are never enough. Check it out if you have time -- http://www.everydayhealth.com/columns/hear-me-out/are-you-an-abstainer-or-a-moderator/?pos=1&xid=nl_EverydayHealthDietandNutrition_20140226.

Dairy Intolerance
I went through an elimination diet over a year ago and found that I'm lactose intolerant. First though, I eliminated all dairy for 3 weeks, including that drop of milk in my coffee. I use almond, soy or coconut milk or creamer instead. After those 3 weeks and feeling so much better, i tried adding back lactose free dairy slowly to see if my symptoms came back, which they didn't, so lactose free, it's been for me. I've found many dairy or lactose free products that I love, including lactaid milk & cottage cheese, and lactose free yogurt. Real cheese is another story with the substitutes not really being tasty enough to want them, for my taste buds at least, so I usually just avoid it altogether. And, there's non-dairy frozen substitutes too. Good luck, and let me know if I can give you any more details on what/where of theses products.

Passing on some info...
I'm curious to hear about the Good Greens bars too. I've been enjoying the Simply Bars and Quest Bars, but am focused on higher protein, low sugar & gluten and lactose free. Thanks for the info!
