chesgreen's Journal, 29 September 2017

Happy Friday. This is a long but important journal entry.

Types of people, who/what are you?
1) The clueless
2) Those who know but don't do (they are no different than #1, they just sound smarter.[ I said this in a journal approximately 1 year ago. Your excuses are the only thing that is between you and your goals])
3) Those who just do and keep doing even if they are not getting the results they want (Wheel spinners)
4) The elite. Those who document, analyze the data, make changes if not getting the desired result or continue on their path if they are getting the results they seek.[I call this the try, fail and adjust if necessary])

As my journey unfolds, I expect to keep you entertained because I am human, prone to moments of weaknesses. I must warn you however, that these moments of weaknesses(A.K.A excuses) will become less and less as I improve my critical

thinking by:
#1 reading books that I buy (any spectator can copy paste from the www) I on the other hand, I've got my health at stake and spending my $$$ puts me on the playing field.
#2 my associations with like minded individuals (even if you follow another way of eating outside of mine, this doesn't mean can't have certain traits in common that creates a powerful bond), and finally
#3 the most important of them all .... THE ACTIONS I TAKE AND THE ANALYSIS OF THEM!

My body my rules. I will get there. I will WIN!!!

Short term goals getting below 200 Lbs (I am X pounds away. Fat, get off my body. I command you to LEAVE this vessel!!!)
Plan: Reduce my carb intake. 1st, I have to determine what my daily average of net carbs for one month by logging everything to create a baseline.

Execution: Completed baseline measurement in Aug 2017. 102.65 Net Carbs was the daily average. With this number, I decided to reduce the intake by 40% to bring me to an average of 61.2 daily net carbs that I can consume.

Progress: as of 9/29/17, I have logged everything for the past 59 days. My current daily avg of net carbs is 66.12 (Guess what, I screwed up 2 ways:
1st - FS in the monthly views, only shows you your carb avg NOT your net carb average which is there is a significant difference in the fact that fiber is not factored in just your carb intake hence the need for a net carb category [by the way, the # I should have been using is 91.09.
2nd - my spreadsheet numbers were predicated on the 102.65 carb value as opposed to the 91.09 net carb value and as a result, my plans/actions were off. These screw ups are powerful teaching moments. As of today, 9/29/17, my daily net carb average is 66.12 which is only a 27% reduction from the Aug baseline # of 91.09. I will take this! How could I reduce or make changes if I wasn't aware of what I was doing? #WINNING

Future: I will reduce my current average of 66.12 NC by 45% to 36.37 in the month of October. I believe a 45% this # to be doable because between Tue and Thu of this week, I averaged 1047.67 calories, 75.90 fat and I have been feeling really
full and I am not a sedentary individual. (If for some reason I miss this goal, guess what #1, I am getting better and better each day and #2 I wont make the same screw up with my plans and actions based off of the wrong info)

Mid Term goal: Working on these. For now, just taking names and kicking a$$!!!

Go FS Team, GO!!!! The struggle is real, but becoming a better person is priceless.

Whatever keeps you going. I just basically do 10% carbs, 60% fat, and 30% protein and it works; even while bodybuilding.

I agree Ches, that's how this works for me too....I've logged every day since Aug 1, 2015...even trying my best I 'm sure I've missed and/or miscalculated items here and there, but also pretty sure not in a material way. For sure by doing this it keeps me accountable to myself and gives me good data to adjust things as needed to keep on keeping on, which in the end is all that matters.

Thanks for setting such a great example - I'm kind of a wheel spinner, but hoping to be able to adjust over time:)

Types of people, who/what are you? 1) The clueless - I am completely clueless about how this body's recent diagnosis of multiple sclerosis will impact this girl's health and fitness. Not only am I clueless, but pretty much all neurologists everywhere are clueless because there is no cure for multiple sclerosis and because it effects the central nervous system (i.e. the spinal chord and brain) and I have no idea if I'll be using my walker one day or a wheelchair the next and there is no medical institution or avid well meaning FS member that can predict this. I must come to accept this clueless state of mind and focus on what I can and am able to do at any given moment. I'm okay with exercise 5 days a week. Works despite being clueless! 2) Those who know but don't do - Yes, I certainly know I can actually combine cardio and strength training in one work out and burn a gazillion calories. I did it before I split the routines up. However, the brain overcompensates in multiple sclerosis because the nerves in the spinal chord have what we call a skewed connection due to damage incurred by lesions. As a result, spasticity and severe muscle spasms and rigid stiffness occur. If I do what I know and push the muscles beyond capacity, even if I know I can do it, I run the risk of collapsing (literally) and/or shearing the muscle. Shearing is when the muscle becomes so rigid, it begins to tear away from the bone. Imagine what muscle tearing away from bone might feel like if I didn't pretend to act "smart" enough to know this :-) 3) Those who just do and keep doing even if they are not getting the results they want (Wheel spinners)- Everytime I do over 168 crunches, 60 old school sit ups, and 1:00 and 30 second plank, without losing a damn pound, I'm spinning my wheels, but ya know what? You KNOW WHY I keep doing it?! BECAUSE I AM MOVING MY BODY EVEN WHEN I CAN'T ALWAYS FEEL MY OWN LEGS, I AM MOVING and I don't know if I'll be able to do it tomorrow or next week, or next month or next year (please look up what MS flare ups are), so I move move move even if it's doing nothing so if I end in a wheelchair I don't look back and regret that I didn't give this body the opportunity to explore and find joy in movement! 4) The elite. Those who document, analyze the data, make changes if not getting the desired result or continue on their path if they are getting the results they seek ---> I have no choice but to document everything, it's the only way one can mindfully assess the progression of multiple sclerosis. To what avail does recording it make, I don't know since there's no cure. How does one know the difference between symptoms that worsen and another flare up? When does a 'flare up' actually end, and one can assume the symptoms are now permanent damage done to the spinal chord? These answers differ from one neurologist to another and all end with "I DON'T KNOW". But, I document nonetheless because I figure at the very least it might comfort someone else with MS that might have similar symptoms and be scared. The sensations can be frightening at times and painful. I can't cure the disease but maybe find ways to make it less painful and share that with others that are trying to suffer less as well. So, I pretty much am your first 4 rules, and I don't care whether or not it people lose respect for me, and actually most disabled people don't care what "abled" people think in that regard, because it's been this girl experience, that between the wheelchair and 2 legs, it is obvious who is actually clueless most of the time! Just sayin'.

@Egull1, I can only sympathize vs empathize. My little sis, got diagnosed @ the age of @ 34 with ms. I have seen her struggle. I have seen her health deteriorate rapidly. She is on long term disability now. She is now married to a man who also has MS and they met @ a MS meetup a few years back. The only thing I can advise is to keep your eyes and heart open ways to treat this (leaning on through nutrition vs drugs). I have a special needs son who is 18. I have never shared this with FS (At least I don't recall) because I have to be super strong for my family and focus on being healthy as I can. I think about what will happen to him if something happens to my wife and I. It wouldn't be fair for his two older brothers (they are still kids 15 & 20) to bear the burden of taking care of him. I have to get healthy and I will heal my body from the damage I have done to it. I will pray for you and all those who suffer. -Ches

Equil1 and Ches, on MS: look up Dr Terry Wahl. She has MS and was in a wheel chair, quite disabled. She turned it around and healed, and in the process developed a healing protocol/diet. Her story and cure might inspire you.
