According to Jim Stoppani, Ph.D, doctor of exercise physiology, you should eat gummy bears immediately after your workout. “Fast-digesting carbs hit your blood stream quicker, causing insulin to spike. Fast-digesting carbs are ideal after a workout." what is everyone's thought on this?
He says the main reason to consume carbs post-workout is to replenish the muscle glycogen that you burned during your workout. He says as you train, your main fuel source is muscle glycogen. Glycogen is the storage form of glucose. It is composed of long strings of glucose molecules with numerous branches. The glucose break from the glycogen chain as needed in order to generate ATP, which transports chemical energy and is crucial for muscle contractions. He says research confirms that the best way to replenish muscle glycogen stores after workouts is to consume high-glycemic (fast-digesting) carbs as soon as possible.Fully replenishing your muscle glycogen levels as quickly as possible after workouts is important for growth. Stored glycogen in muscle cells pulls water into those cells. This increases the muscle cell volume and therefore muscle fiber fullness.
Where are my gurus?? If I do low carb and then eat a handful of gummies wont that slow my loss? He says nothing about losing weight only building muscle.. I just want everyone's opinion so I can make a educated decision.. Also Im worried gummies would be a "gateway" food and open the door to more cheating..

I read somewhere that gummy bears are really bad to eat. I'm also curious of other member's opinions!

His advice is directed toward bodybuilders. If you're trying to lose weight, the number one most important variable is caloric intake. At a deficit (the condition required for you to lose weight) your body can't support the metabolic processes required to build adequate muscle anyway, so a fast digesting carb to spike your insulin to increase repair won't really help you out. TLDR; for the average person trying to lose weight no you don't need sugar post-workout.

My weight loss doctor, Dr. Kurt Hong (https://internalmedicine.usc.edu/specialties/weight-management/) had me take branch-chain amino acids. He said to take it within a 1/2 hour after exercise. Branch-chain amino acids are derived from protein. They are isolated parts of the protein that encourage muscle repair. Being I was about 58 at the time, he kept track of my weight loss and muscle loss. He prescribed the acids to keep me from losing muscle, as I was losing muscle even with exercise. They tasted AWFUL. You can get it at places like GNC. Powders, pills, and drinks. I just couldn't take the taste. He had me taking 15 grams, which was, like, 13 pills. I think I'm going to start again though. I'm 62 now and losing muscle is part of growing old, let alone dieting on top of it. If I was back in Pasadena, CA, I would go back to him. I almost made my goal then. Continuing now. BTW, there are small amounts of branch-chain amino acids in the Spiru-tein powder shakes. They don't seem to alter the taste of the Spiru-tein. Obviously, talk to your doctor before taking this. http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supplements/ingredientmono-1005-branched-chain%20amino%20acids.aspx?activeingredientid=1005

Gummy bears sounds like a bad idea even on a good day. Maybe for bodybuilders. But that sugar will hit your bloodstream and undo any workout or dieting you've done. Good luck with this. I'm familiar with Jim Stoppani's work also, and am a little surprised by this. Maybe there's something I don't know.

I stay in ketosis. I eat whole foods. Watch my carb intake. I'm not seeing gummy bears in my diet future.

ok so prolly no gummies,, which is what I thought and thought it was weird he would recommend them BUT I love Dr.Stoppani and wanted to at least ask my buddies about it. I am not a body builder but I do lift 4 times a week , so its worth my time to look into ..

Hi redgirl, I'm a Registered Dietitian and an avid gym-goer. What Dr. Stoppani says is true, post-workout is one of the most ideal times to have fast acting carbohydrates. While it is not necessary to have fast acting carbs after a workout, they do have benefits. First of all, you have to have these sugars simultaneously with protein. Don't eat the carbs alone. Second, if your goal is to lose weight overall, your #1 priority is to have a negative balance of calories at the end of the day. Can fast acting carbs help post-workout? Yes. If you are weight training and your muscles are becoming sore, the added carbs can help repair or preserve muscle you might otherwise lose in a calorie deficit diet (side note: if you had an equal or higher kcal diet, I would say grow muscle instead of repair/preserve for obvious reasons). Remember, preserving muscle is crucial in the battle of losing weight. Maintaining your lean muscle mass as much as possible since muscle cells are the most metabolically active (more muscle = higher metabolism). If you are doing a cardio session and not lifting very heavy, I would not recommend fast carbs because the whole point is to drain the glycogen. If you are lifting weights go for it. TLDR; if you're going to cheat, you may have sugars post-workout (heavy weights, not cardio) in moderation

There are two sources to create ATP. One is glucose and the other is ketones. Stick with what you know works.. You're a lot like me, trying to read and apply all the information out there. 95% of the coaches and trainers out there believe and profess a glucocentric way of eating that is the exact opposite for those of us who are trying to limit/eliminate dietary glucose. Back to ATP, our cells will take both glucose and/or ketones and produce ATP for cellular energy. In this 'conversion' process there is waste (free radicals) that is created and this waste needs to be processed/eliminated somehow. Thinks of this as the exhaust from your car and your car (cells) can run on two different types of fuel. There are less free radicals created when ketones are used for the production of ATP, ie. less exhaust and less harmful material/waste that your body has to deal with on a daily basis. Our bodies, those of us in Ketopia, start the process to replenish ATP almost immediately since we're keto adapted, unlike those carb burners out there, our bodies have all the ingredients necessary to make this happen.

Wow, how easily the wrong information is packaged as scientific and professional. This site is a low-carb, weight loss site and blog.

thanks frosty and aremh1.. Frosty knows me pretty well so Imma go with what he says since we have kind been on duplicate paths since we "met" here on FS. See this is what I wanted.. to spark up a convo and get all sides and inputs... Bottom line.. all tho I lift, and I lift what I consider to be heavy, losing weight is my number one goal and building muscle is my secondary goal..so I will focus on that.. thanks every one ... great responses.. as always
