Sixty-seven years old. College professor (English Lit). Circus performer and musician in my 20s; triathlete and marathoner in my 30s; fat and depressed graduate student in my 40s; two Masters Bodybuilding Shows in my 50s (Second Place). I've been in the gym 15 years, am preparing for my next career in the Fitness Industry, and want to increase my knowledge about nutrition and diet.

In 2016 I had prostate cancer. It wasn't advanced, and I think a few radiation treatments knocked it out of me. As this writing, late April 2017, I'm a little emaciated and deconditioned, but have gotten back up under the iron and am running in the street and on the treads. I feel great, but am used to being a little stronger and more fit. Of course, my nutrition went way off the rails while I was getting nuked. Lots of ice cream, booze, fatty foods. I'm trying to start logging meals again. It's a matter of revisiting old habits and getting back on the wagon.

I deserved a break yesterday!
Thanks so much for this. I'm an advanced lifter and a lifelong athlete. But I am having some body-breakdown issues: arthritis everywhere, some serious herniations from a motorcycle accident, you know how it goes. . . All this is on my profile, I think. I did competitions all through my fifties, but think 66 is a little old to be on stage in a posing slip. I train at BusyBodies gym in Boca Raton with Darrem Charles. Besides pretty regularly falling off the wagon, my real issue is that as my body ages I'm having problems reading the signs. Hormones change, digestion gets harder, my skin becomes less elastic. And, I don't really know what is legitimate to expect. I'll keep posting here and if you can, let me know what you're thinking. I'm pretty familiar with gaining and leaning out for shows, but right now I'm in a very different phase. Thanks for this help. I'll look at the sites you recommend for macro balance.

Thanks for the note. Yeah, it should be down around 3,300. I'm still not sure how to adjust things here. I would like to put on about 15 pounds of lean body mass -- mostly to make up for what I lost in the fall when I was sick This is probably an unlikely goal, I'm way more active than most people in my profession, and work out hard five days a week.. My age slows me up, and it isn't clear what I can legitimately expect. I need to get a good week of meal logging here, just to get a base for my macros. I'm happy for any advice you might have. Right now, I'm studying sports nutrition in night school, but every body is its own system.

Okay, so I've been lame logging my meals lately, but have been staying on track. I tried to jump my daily calories from around 1800 to 3800 per day. But it's unbelievably hard to eat that much. My goal is to gain lean muscle mass by manipulating my macros. Last night my wife Fleur and I made one of our once-a-year-stops at MacDonalds, and I quite easily got over my calorie limit: Fries, 230 calories; Bacon Cheese Burger: 710, Chocolate Shake 720, to get me a grand total of 4000-and -change for yesterday. It's an amazing experience to logging meals here and to learn what we can put into our bodies without knowing. Bad Grin

getting disocouraged
I've been on here a while, but just started for real today. This my first post to any forum, so please forgive me in advance if I send this into outer space or say something really stupid. It looks like you're getting good advice here. I see your diet is private, and someone would have to know what you're eating, when, and what you're doing with your trainer to judge any results. My guess is that you're high in blood sugar and that is keeping you from depleting to the point that your body reaches for adipose tissue for energy. Just a guess. But, about being discouraged: I think we all fight disappointment and discouragement, especially when we should be seeing results. It may be a good idea to tell yourself you're on the right side of the gym door and that you've already made the hard choices.
