I'm going to be hungry

I'm enjoying this dialogue, everyone. I want to start off by saying that "sh--ting rainbows" isn't annoying or bothersome. I just feel left out when other people are keeping their heads up when I can't. I guess what I want is total honesty, when times are good, bad, and meh.

Also, I think it matters a lot WHY you're dieting and WHERE YOU'RE STARTING. There are big differences between trying to fit into your wedding dress and trying to becomes healthier for life. And there's a difference between being very overweight with the goal of reaching a healthy weight and being 5-10 overweight and wanting to look hot. Again, all experiences are valid but there are distinctions.

That is all. Thanks for the discussion.

I agree that the journey may feel a lot harder when someone has more to lose (don't know if people with only a few lbs to lose agree). I personally started at 198 4/9, my goal is 140, that to me is substantial. First, I can't look at it with the word "diet" anymore... this time I look at it as a "transition". I need to change how I see food. Trust me, I love big greasy burgers and fries... big bowls of ice cream.. but I was doing that all the time. In the beginning, it was eye-opening, harder and so much temptation! It has gotten better because I plan my meals. We can go to Golden Corral for dinner and before I go, I have my plan laid out. If Wendy's, I get my grilled chicken (yum!) and a small/large chili depending on the calories I have.

I am no health guru. I just look at packages, googled foods that keep me fuller longer and have been using those. If I am at an event, I make decent choices. Sometimes I endulge YES! I won't stop living my life over not busting my calorie budget every single day... My biggest point is that I do good as much as I can, I endulge every once in a while. These are choices that I would like to try to continue making after I reach my goal.

I miss boxed mac and cheese... I just put a piece of sliced cheese in a bowl of 1/2 cooked noodles... I really, really miss sketti and garlic bread. I could eat 4 pieces of bread and 2 plates full! I'm Italian, I can't help myself! Smile So far so good.

Don't feel left out, lots of people feel the way you do. As you keep going, relax, maybe give yourself a little more calories so it isn't so "miserable". A deficit you will still lose, how great the deficit and how fast the loss is up to you! I enjoy your posts!!

E-M-E-R-G-E-N-C-Y...I'm hungry! (Portable Snacks Quick List)
I have a sweet potato for breakfast. I keep an apple at my desk. I have a box of Wheat Thins in my drawer and portion 1 serving size and put it away. I keep dark chocolate covered almonds as well. I rarely eat snacks throughout the day though. I have my sweet potato, my lunch and then my dinner. Occassionally have my NSA ice cream sprinkled with granola. Drink lots and lots of water.

I'm going to be hungry
Losing weight doesn't have to be a miserable experience at all. I think giving up things you OVERenjoy is a miserable feeling though! I can tell you before I focused, I drank two cups of coffee all day... then had dinner. I was never hungry. No issues fasting on Ash Wed and thought, you know, that's weird. So I decided I needed to eat, even tho I wasn't hungry. Once I started eating I was STARVING all the time! Then I started to look into what foods made you feel fuller longer, I mean, I am no health guru at all! I now have a full sweet potato for breakfast (I started with brown sugar but now just eat it bare), I have Chipotle everyday with my husband for lunch (I'll get into that), and whatever decent meal we come up for dinner.. skinless/boneless chicken things, sauteed green beans and perogies maybe. I stay full! Chipotle is a pretty big lunch (sometimes I only eat half on a day) and it's about what you put into your bowl on whether it's horrific or not. I do brown rice, black beans, fresh tomato salsa, fajita veggies, sometimes I get a "little" sour cream, sometimes I go for guac. I try to just put the right things in my mouth and keep an apple nearby if I feel hungry coming on. The hubby has a couple eggs and a banana in the am, that holds him off until lunch. My "sweets" is an occassional bowl of NSA ice cream with granola sprinkled. The good thing about that... too much and you know it! So I eat!

Dieting doesn't have to suck. Sure, not being able to have junk sucks. I love me some Reese PB Cups, Dbl Quarter Pounders... whatever. Sometimes not being able to have them sucks royally! BUT, the longer I go, the more I realize what making those choices bad actually does to me. What it HAS done and I don't want that anymore. You are in charge of taking weight loss into your hands and find what works for you so that you can stay motivated enough to keep going. If you start believing it will be miserable, it will be.

If you aren't eating the right things, your calories will go too fast. So make the most of those calories! That's the best thing I have found for myself. Don't settle with miserable, make the most of it.

Well you're right about the s**tting rainbows. I think people are trying really hard to stay positive, and so what happens is we don't post as much about the struggles we go through daily and try instead to keep ourselves motivated. It is always going to suck when you can't eat all the foods that you want. I thought I was going to slap someone who kept offering me cake at work last week (4 times -- good grief, can't you realize NO MEANS NO!), while I tried to hide my drool and professed that I didn't want it. But I just keep reminding myself that it will pay off in the end. Every time I pass a test like that, I feel stronger.

I'm going to 3rd the high fat, low carb, moderate protein plan. I think you have to have a calorie deficit to lose weight, but in my case it really helps with curbing my hunger so that I do end up eating less calories.

Well said!

Diet Snobbery- Anyone else notice this?
There is snobbery out there. There are always two opposite ends of every spectrum. I realized I could be snobbish when I saw an episode of a show and the girl had been heavy her whole life and her parents paid for her gastro whatever it is surgery. Sure the girl lost weight but it was very clear that she didn't learn anything from it. She admitted at one point of eating 10-12 hamburgers, getting sick but going back and getting more... and this is a girl "who tried everything" to lose weight? Then she asked her parents to pay for her surgery to take off the excess skin and the mother told her, "You can't just keep eating everything in sight!" A fair concern when it was out of her pocket imo. That scenario made me feel quite snobbish but I think it was more that I felt there was no lesson learned and this is a person who claimed to have tried everything.

Don't misunderstand, surgery can be very helpful for some people without a doubt... a lot of times I say if I had that money to throw around I would probably do it myself! Still, everyone finds tricks that work for them and a lot of people are able to provide amazing advice that helps others as well. I think finding support is the greatest tool you can get, it comes with so many wonderful benefits!! Sometimes cutting out carbonated drinks helps people, sometimes it doesn't. Atkins can work for people and others find it's just not the right path for them.

I personally think the biggest thing (for me) is re-learning how healthy eating should be (even I still have a rough time with it). Eating more, eating less, add this, take out that, moderation.. it goes on and on! Above all having support! That was one instance however that did get an eyeroll out of me when no, I am typically not at all "snobbish".
