This is chapter 2 of my FS bio. I joined FS in July 2010, and I was successfully following the low-glycemic diet, lost 50 pounds and felt and looked great. I was trying for another 50 pounds. And then the bottom dropped out of my life -- my Mom's ovarian cancer came back with a vengeance, and from June 2011 to June 2012, I took care of her, and then spent most of the next year settling her estate and emptying and selling her house. There were days when it got to be 5:00 and all I'd eaten was a couple of donuts. Then I'd eat dinner out and stuff myself with all the wrong food because I was famished and depressed. The result was to be expected: I gained back a lot of the weight I'd lost, how much I don't really know because I haven't had the courage to get on a scale.

So I'm starting over again. What else can I do?

Too early to set goals, but will do that once I weigh in at the end of August.

When I'm not counting calories on Fat Secret, I'm a marketing/communications specialist working with not-for-profit organizations. I'm an enthusiastic gardener and theater goer, and play mom to two Shelties, an 8-year-old rescued girl, Hermione, and an 8-month-old puppy, Carson.

Update July 8, 2014 -- I think I really am back now. Will be doing my food diary and plan to get weighed the beginning of next month so as to have the most encouraging starting weight possible!

Quinoa uses
I love quinoa, which I use instead of rice or other starches. Now I've discovered a new application: I've been buying Arrowhead Mills Quinoa & Oats hot cereal for a couple years, but I only just figured out that I can use it as a side dish. When I eat it for breakfast, I add blueberries and about 1/4 tsp of turbinado sugar. But now, I also make a savory version: After cooking it, I sprinkle on some seasoned sea salt and add 2 TBSPs of parmesan cheese and mix it in. It comes out like those fancy oat risottos that restaurants are serving now. It's delicious with any kind of meat -- but especially red meat -- instead of potatoes. I'm quite pleased with it.

kitchen question, totally off topic
I have vases in that cabinet. It's pretty small. Used to have small appliances there but didn't like getting on a step stool and reaching over the hot stove to get them.

New Products that Work
I don't do daily blood sugars, because I've not had a reason to -- but I can tell you that my low-glycemic diet, including some sprouted wheat, has kept my A1C at healthy levels. But I don't eat a heck of a lot of wheat either -- mostly quinoa, hulled barley, oats, and occasionally brown rice. Luckily for me, I was never a huge bread eater, so I don't really mind all that much.

New Products that Work
Here are a couple more -- I had never heard of sprouted grain bread before I went low-glycemic and had to find a way to occasionally enjoy a sandwich without blowing the whole day's worth of carbs. So I've been eating Angelic Bakehouse sprouted grain bread ever since -- low-carb, high fiber, low calorie. I guess people are finding out when a good idea sprouted grain is, because now there is an Arrowhead Mills Sprouted Multigrain Flakes cold cereal. This is really tasty, and far lower in carbs than usual cereal. And now I've discovered a hot cereal -- quinoa and oats -- that's way lower in carbs than regular oatmeal, higher in protein, and really tasty. So glad my horizons are broadening after having to avoid so many foods this summer!

Mummydee-- I am going to save the link for these. Right now, I can't eat them because they have sorbitol, and that is a no-no on the IBS diet I have had to be on since having a food-borne infection over the summer, but I should be ok again soon and can try these out... thanks so much
