I'm a nearing 60 single woman who's finally decided to take control of my weight. I've always been heavy -- but when I was younger, I would go through periods of rigid and successful dieting and get my weight down. But now I'm low thyroid with some orthopedic problems, and it's caused me to gain more weight than ever before -- with the expected cholesterol and blood pressure issues.

I've been on a low glycemic diet since I joined FS in July 2010 -- long enough that it's become a routine. I've lost more than 50 pounds, and the scale continues on a downward trend, albeit slowly. I feel great and look great -- lots of compliments on my weight loss. Now it's time to set some goals...

Low Carb Breakfast Ideas?
Try to find yourself some sprouted grain bread. I use Cybros from Whole Foods and it is very low carb, low calorie and high fiber. My favorite fast breakfast is 1 slice of this bread, one slice of lactose-free swiss cheese melted over 3/4 serving of uncured turkey ham steak. I'm also very big on egg white omelettes with spinach and swiss cheese. And I frequently eat leftover fish from dinner for the next morning's breakfast.

Soup as the new salad
Made a useful discovery today. In the summer, I'm perfectly happy to throw leftover cold fish or chicken on lettuce and call it lunch. But in cold weather I want something heartier.

So..over last weekend I made a huge crockpot full of low-carb veggie soup with a tomato base. And today, for lunch I heated up the soup and on impulse threw in a few ounces of leftover scallops from dinner last night. Voila. Fish stew. It was really good and got me to thinking that I can do the same thing with chicken breast, turkey sausage, tilapia, etc. and have a much more satisfying meal than leftovers with salad.

Any other ideas like this?

Dining Out -- How To's
There have been a number of discussions over the past year about how to eat out and stay on a diet. South Beach posted this helpful hints article today.

The bread basket issue is an especially tricky one for me. I often eat out with my mom, who is 90 and a size 4 and really needs the extra calories in the bread to even maintain her weight. So I usually grab the bread basket and put it as far away from me on her side of the table as possible. But I'm lucky to also have a couple of friends who go out with me who do not want to be eating bread, and so when I'm with them, we just hand the bread basket right back to the busman so that it's not on the table to tempt us. I find that I'm at the point that if it's not a restaurant with really great bread, it's not such a problem...but there are a few places we go that serve hot fresh sourdough, and if I don't get the bread off the table, I know I will indulge.

Any other tricks besides the advice from South Beach?

Filling foods for chilly weather?
So we've had our first few days of cool weather, and today I schlepped down to the basement freezer and pulled out a container of turkey chili from late last winter. Had some over hulled barley and green peas for lunch today. Anyone else with good soups or stews to share are the weather chills out?
