This is chapter 2 of my FS bio. I joined FS in July 2010, and I was successfully following the low-glycemic diet, lost 50 pounds and felt and looked great. I was trying for another 50 pounds. And then the bottom dropped out of my life -- my Mom's ovarian cancer came back with a vengeance, and from June 2011 to June 2012, I took care of her, and then spent most of the next year settling her estate and emptying and selling her house. There were days when it got to be 5:00 and all I'd eaten was a couple of donuts. Then I'd eat dinner out and stuff myself with all the wrong food because I was famished and depressed. The result was to be expected: I gained back a lot of the weight I'd lost, how much I don't really know because I haven't had the courage to get on a scale.

So I'm starting over again. What else can I do?

Too early to set goals, but will do that once I weigh in at the end of August.

When I'm not counting calories on Fat Secret, I'm a marketing/communications specialist working with not-for-profit organizations. I'm an enthusiastic gardener and theater goer, and play mom to two Shelties, an 8-year-old rescued girl, Hermione, and an 8-month-old puppy, Carson.

Quinoa recipes anyone?
Make your favorite tabouli recipe and substitute quinoa for the bulgar wheat. I alternate weeks -- one week I make a batch of quinoa, the next week I make hulled barley. Then throughout the week I mix in veggies and sauces and measure a careful 1/2 cup serving as a side dish. It's healthy -- but it's still carbs and calories, and it's a good idea to manage portion size!

Grill
On the bottom of the griddler it says GR-4N. These are pretty expensive -- I waited until there was a sale at Bed, Bath & Beyond and used one of the 20% off coupons they sometimes send in the mail. But I have never regretted it. I'm just crazy about it.

Pants Looser
I threw out my scale. I weigh in once a month at my doctor or gym. Getting the scale out of the house ensures that you don't keep hopping on it and worrying over whether your diet is working or not.

Healthy Eating
I'm kind of surprised that the class was so critical of South Beach, which from what I can tell is a pretty healthy diet. The more I read on low-GI dieting, the more convinced I am that even if you don't put anything totally "off limits" - "white" food, white flour, white bread, white rice, white potatoes -- needs to very severely restricted, with whole grains, quinoa, hulled barley, sweet potatoes, sprouted grain bread, replacing these white foods. Making these changes significantly lowers one's intake of simple carbs. More to the point, my personal experience has been that it's possible that I have a mild intolerance for wheat, because the less I eat of it, the better I feel. On a recent vacation when I threw caution to the winds and my diet out the window and ate all the bread and cake I wanted, I had indigestion constantly. As soon as I came home and got back on my diet, the indigestion went away.
