jsfantome's Journal, 06 December 2011

Been around this block a time or two, and getting just a little discouraged at the amount of time, effort and energy focused on losing a stinkin’ single pound! REALLY? This shouldn’t be this hard!

But like Stef, Buffy, Moose, Issy, Squiggs, and tons of others… there seems to be something about weightloss than just calories in vs calories out.

If that were the golden ticket…I’d be dead! I would have lost all of my body weight by now, and there would be nothing left of me…literally! LOL!

I have been consistently exercising – every day, or every other day. Cardio and Weights – to the tune of about 250 calories burned per session.

Have I somehow shot myself in the foot? Did I train my body to survive on roughly 1500 calories a day? If I am using up aprox 1200 calories a day just to be alive… and I am active at LEAST 3-4 times per week… and most days my calories are between 12-1500… then WHAT GIVES? Is my metabolism really that off?

I have plenty of energy when I work out! I run around my life like a mad woman in any given day. I rarely feel ‘hungry’ or ‘distracted’ by foods (especially when I have had the worst offenders out of my system for a few days!) … So I am going along, doing my thing…eating low carb, enjoying the benefits of higher protein and no hunger…

Is that it? Is my protein too high? Everything I have read and every time I have spoken to my trainer, he has suggested 100g’s of protein or higher for me.

Is it my fats? Are they not the right ones? Not enough? Too much?

This has become the bottom line: I AM NOT WILLING TO SETTLE! I did not start this to end up short of my goal, and just give up! I am smarter than the average 5th grader! I am willing, determined and successful. I am open minded and will take advantage of any and all advice – shy of ‘drastic’ means. I will not give in to the temptation to mess up my body by ‘taking pills’ or ‘injecting hormones’ or ‘eating drastically low calories’. I don’t believe those work. And in the end, I think they do far more harm than good.

I am looking to figure this out the old fashioned way. I am willing to work for this. I just have not a clue what to do anymore! I feel confused, angry and unsettled every time I go to put food in my mouth. Every day is an opportunity to create the right balance, and provide the right supply of nutrients, balanced with activity …and come out with a loss at the end of a week. I’ve done this – I know there is a WAY! What I don’t know is what that WAY … is!

And the roller coaster continues! (sorry red team… but I will keep trying!)

You're a rockstar, Paula and I think you have it all figured out already. There's just not enough journal space in this cloud for you to share it all at once!

I feel your frustration - Again! I so do wish I did have the magic formula - I would certainly share.

Are you sure the stress of wanting to lose those few pounds isn't keeping them on your body? I've been bouncing between the same 4lbs for about a month, but I've accepted it's just a fluxation and I just keep plugging along with my WOE and exercise. Sometimes when I stall it's cause the body gets too used to certain things, if you are eating the same way and exercising the same way, it might be easy for your body to get used to that as normal and not shed any extra pounds. Most of us crave routine (myself included) but from my experience that doesn't let the body lose weight.

icemaiden - I had the same thought. And there is another thing... what if we reach our goal. There is nothing to work for anymore, just maintaining. Somwhow we can manage to not get there just to keep the goal.

Raise your goal and you won't be dissapointed..and if by chance you go lower than that..Well you would be a happy camper..no more frustrations..Just saying...this is meant to ease your mind..sent with love and hugs....Bren...♥♥♥

I sooooo understand your pain. I have tried for years to get under 200 lbs. I have made comment, have I got the metabolism of a two year old! I would love to have it checked out. This time I have gotten really close and am determined to do it. Perhaps we are 'blessed' with a super efficient body and that just sucks. I have often seen tv programmes that show what overweight people eat, each time hubby and I remark I'd be twice their size within months if I ate like that. It is so difficult .... I am hanging in there with you, no magic advice, just to say YOU ARE NOT ALONE XXXXX

Paula, whoever figures out the answer to your question will be a very rich person indeed! So very frustrating! You are not alone, we all are in the same boat! For me I am trying to learn to love the me I am today, for today, one day at a time! If you have tried everything else, maybe you need to eat more?

Paula, I'm no expert on the Atkins diet, but I sure would like to see you document your entire intake and exercise for the next couple of weeks. Even with Atkins, when you get close to your goal weight, it's especially important to eat close to your RDI, and I think when you do that, you have to occasionally jump start your metabolism. IMHO, you can be too disciplined in trying to stay below your RDI, and turn down the heat on your metabolism.

Paula, Paula, Paula! Stop stressing! (Like I do! Hee! Hee!) There is definitely a thing that our bodies do to protect us... when we are in that stress factor. So, shake it out... release the frustrations ... and ... ready for this? .... CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE. Skip a workout day then when you go back ... do more than usual. Same thing with you food... eat less one day than usual .... and then eat normally ... then eat a bit more one day. I think this might work. I am trying this one myself because I felt just like you did for the last couple of weeks.

Ok, two of you...have hit the nail on the perverbial head!!! How do I know..well, I wouldn't be me, if I didn't spend all my time RESEARCHING to dig deep and try to find my answers! While I love all of you... Bren (you included)... I am not relenting from this challenge. I'm just not! And there is no reason why I cannot lose these last 8=15 lbs - so... what's a smart girl to do!!! The two things I read about this morning, that lined up with exactly what is going on in me... is ... Icy's remarks about routine. I 'overly embraced' the routine of low carb, because it worked for me! And I love how I feel, and I love the foods I eat... but apparently so does my body! And I have trained it well, to be accustomed to Bkfst, Lunch and Dinner, one to two snacks...calories between 1300-1700 - almost auto pilot! Carbs range from 20 Total to 40 total, on a consistent basis. Water Intake, like clockwork! Exercise,... fairly regular...but I wanted the easy way out. The least common denominator! 3 days exercising and losing weight...vs. 7 days exercising and losing weight. If I could lose on the 3 day a week plan, that fits my life better!!! And GG - maybe I need to eat more? You just casually throw that out there...like you don't know that is CRITICAL! Well, it is for me! So - as of today, as of this Dec. 6th, 2011... I am changing this up girls! Don't know what amounts of what yet, but lean proteins, veggies galore, limited but healthy fats, limited low carb fruits, very limited nuts (salad topping or in a veggie side dish only) - as I eat too many of them by hand! And nothing below 1500 calories. I will start working towards zig zagging... when I get a grip on my new way of eating... and my new committed exercise plan. Which now is changing ALSO! If it takes 5 days.. then 5 days it is! If it takes 6.. then 6. Didn't want to have to go there... just being honest... but I will. I am just not willing to not make the progress I want! My body is not some quirky rare breed that cannot lose weight past 146lbs. I was 140 last year at this time... so I know it's humanly possible. Just have to keep trying each alternative until I figure this out for my body. In the end... I don't care what it's called...Atkins, Primal, South Beach, WHATEVER... I will certainly know my boundaries by heart~ ♥

KK - thank you... and yes, I agree... as of yesterday..I am back logging faithfully! EVERY LAST BITE. I will figure this out! Come Heck or High Water... I will not drown!

Your doing great! Maybe try switching up what your eating instead of less calories.. like switching most your fat intake to good fat.. (monounsaturated) avacados, almonds, olive oil, black olives, natural peanut butter. I've read alot about good fats and how they can trick your body into losing weight when eating low calorie. Plus you burn more viseral fat, better for health :)

You WILL find your own key to this mystery. Glad to see you back to logging everything. I always say, if you're struggling, go back to the basics....measure and log EVERYTHING!!! Can't wait to find out what you discover!

Paula, I am back to logging, measuring, weighing, watching every single morsel once again. I am tired of being STUCK and now gaining. I know that stress is a BIG (as in HUGE) player in this weight loss thing, so I am going to attempt to stop stressing...easier said than done, but I will do it! Have a great day. Love and hugs, my friend! (That Fitbit will tell you EXACTLY how many calories you burn in a day, even while sleeping!) ;)

Paula, I think that you have spoken for almost everyone of us on this site...we get too accustomed to our routine and WOE that our bodies just adjust and think all is well at whatever number we happen to be. Every once in a while someone will write about having a "bad" weekend or whatever and then producing a loss...what did they do? They merely shook up the old routine. After reading your entry today I did a bit of research myself...and I know one of the things I need to do is eat more good fats as suggested by Paulanater...let off the butter, bacon, sausage, etc. a bit and opt for better choices. I also need to make sure that I eat enough every day...my diet calendar often looks like "feast or famine" which absolutely confuses the body. One other thing I read about was how stress affects our weight...and sorry to say, dear, but you have been under alot of stress this fall....health issue, Mom, grown children, wedding plans, friend's death...all this takes a toll and our bodies hang onto whatever just to maintain. Maintain seems to be the operative word...we are maintaining and it's time to shake up the routine and let go of the stress and kick butt before the holidays....count me in...let's go for it!

Dear Santa - I would love a stress free Christmas! My hubby just came home, had a major melt down over the stupidest little thing regarding some broken lights for the tree... and here I sit in tears, with no one to talk to except a computer screen. And surely, this moment, along w/ dozens of others... are clinging to my hips! So, Santa... dear, Santa... just a stress-free holiday season! I really have been good this year. Don't know what else to say. If not, could you just break my scale so I can't notice what's what! :) Much Love. Me.
