Entering this 'Healthy Ice Cream' recipe as a separate Joural entry in hopes of keeping the formatting!

OK, here goes. The one I did last night. Made MORE than a quart! It was an over-the-top deviation of my basic recipe. I use my awesome Ninja blender, but any sturdy blender will work.

The basic recipe for all my smoothies/healthy ice cream is:

One cup of unsweetened almond milk (for ice cream), two cups for shakes/smoothies
One scoop of flavored protein powder (about 30 grams) (or more if you need the protein)
Two cups of frozen berries (or other fruit) or a frozen banana (for ice cream/sorbet), one cup for shakes/smoothies

Based on this simple formula, I've been experimenting and having a great time. Last night I had extra calories available, so I made a double batch. The recipe typically makes about a quart! You don't have to eat it all at once, but I usually do! Just think how low cal it would be if you were not a glutton like me and actually shared with someone! : )

Last night's berry-banana-chocolate-kale blast:

One cup Blue Diamond Almond Breeze Unsweetened Vanilla Milk (30 cals)
Two scoops Syntrax Essence Isolated Protein Blend - Chocolate (200 cals)
One cup Safeway Frozen Blueberries (107 cals)
One cup Safeway Organic Whole Strawberries Frozen (50 cals)
One medium frozen Banana (120 cals) -- I measure these out in advance so I know the calories
Two TBSP Hershey's Natural Unsweetened Cocoa (for extra chocolate flavor) - (20 cals)
Five TBSP Healthworks Cacoa Nibs (120 cals) (these are optional, but they taste great!)
40 grams Kale (got to get my leafy greens in there -- you can't even tell!) (20 cals)

Total calories for about 1.25 QUARTS -- 647! Or as I said, much less per regular serving!

In the blender, put in the almond milk first, then the frozen fruit and protein powder, and then stuff it to the brim with the fresh kale (or spinach, etc.)

Blend on the highest setting for 30 seconds; take off the top, stuff any unblended ingredients down on the sides and into the mix, and blend for another 30 seconds or until you get the consistency of soft ice cream.

Remember, two parts milk to one part frozen fruit will make a shake (and even one to one for a REALLY thick shake); one part milk to two parts fruit will make sorbet/ice cream.

Experiment with different frozen fruits, different types of 'milk', and different flavors of protein powder. Put in chia, flax, or nuts, or anything else you want to try. Just be sure to count up all the ingredient calories for FatSecret! Enjoy! Bill

Your smoothie recipe always looks so good. I have to check some other stores for the unsweetened cocoa. Have you ever used frozen kale? Thanks for posting.

I may use it since some is in the freezer already. But I want to try the exact recipe as soon as I get all of the ingredients.

That's cool. I am heading back to food tracking tomorrow. I know that a smoothie is dangerous territory for me. So I will definitely track my ingredients closely. Also I think 139Lb will be lowest posted weight for this month. I can do better but I will have to up the activity level. I’m working on the water now.

Draglist, Thanks for the yummy "Icecream" option. I sure could have used it last night. My recipe wasn't as clean as yours. I'm trying yours tonight if my calories allow.

Also, when deciding on a protein powder, how do I know which one is right for me? I've been using up a container of Protein Powder that my sons left behind. (Body Fortress - Super advanced with whey protein, 8 grams of BCAA's, Crystalline Taurine, and Lean Body activators.) I noticed the one you use in the recipe above is isolated ? what does that mean. I have no idea if the one I have is best one for me. Everyone is at different stages of journeys, and since I'm just beginning I wanted to be sure I'm using the protein powder that's best for me. any idea's? (sorry for being long winded!!)

The kale blast sounds awesome - I will try it but decrease some of the fruit since I have to watch my sugar intake.

The recipe sounds great, going to give it a try soon. Something else that's good in a smoothie is avocado, has a nice creamy texture. 1/8 of an avocado adds about 40 calories and some healthy fats to the diet.
