Good Morning, FS Warriors! Woke at 3:30 to the bleating of the alarm clock. Got up, looked out the window and saw that it was pouring down rain. My first thought was, "Go back to bed, get an extra 1 1/2 hours of sleep. Tomorrow is another day." My second thought was, "Yay, a chance to try out my new North Face running jacket!" Sometimes 2nd thoughts aren't everything they are cracked up to be. There are times when I wish I could just shut my mind off before the 2nd thoughts have a chance to develop. So, I got up and donned my running attire. After all, they probably won't cancel the race because of rain. Today, I had a 30 minute tempo run scheduled. I warmed up and ran at about as fast a clip as I could for 30 minutes, but the standing water kept slowing me up. I guess it became like aerobic and strength training combined. At least I got er done.
There are a few things you need to know about running attire, if you don't know it already. The pupose of this techie material is to wick the water away to the air and have it evaporate. And when it is cold, you wear a base layer to wick the water (sweat) away from your skin, and then the outer layer wicks it to the outside and evaporates, and you stay dry and warm. Now, my North Face running jacket has breathable vents, and is water repellent. So, if it is pouring down rain, and the base layer wicks the water away from my skin, and the jacket is water repellant, not waterproof, you get the idea; you're wet either way. You just don't get soaked like you would if you ran without protection. The jacket is optimum for below 65 degrees, but it's light and breathable enough that you can run with some degree of comfort up to about 80 degrees with it unzipped. Well, anyway, there is no good solution when it's pouring down rain and it's 75 degrees or warmer outside - exept maybe running with an umbrella. I thought of that, but then I thought, "Would a bearded Mary Poppins, bobbing down the street in the pouring rain at 3:30 in the morning, cause an accident?" I decided against it.
Worship/Nursing home ministry practice at the church tonight. And then I get to go vacuum up water downstairs afterward. The guys are supposed to be installing the A/C units tomorrow, and I'd hate to have them wading through water to run the lines. It's not that bad, but the water table is very high right now and the ground is saturated and the water has nowhere to go. I am going to have to install a couple sump pumps and run discharge hoses well down the road. It's concrete floors and there are drains, and I haven't done any renovations downstairs yet, so it isn't a huge issue right now.
DW made big hamburgers last night (about 1/2 pound). I didn't eat any bread. Just had one hamburger with lettuce, tomaotes and onions on the side, and roasted potatoes. Not entirely a dieter's dream, but I felt I was making a pretty good concession by not eating bread. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. :) Now, if I would have just left those cheez-its alone later! Didn't entirely sabotage the day, but it wasn't for lack of trying. I would post a fat picture on the refrigerator to keep me from snacking, but I don't keep the cheez-its in the refrigerator. Yay, another day coming up, and I get another chance at victory!
Oh yeah, almost forgot, I went online early this morning and bought tickets to see Don Williams in Peoria on October 9th. I've always liked that guys singing, and he isn't going to be around forever. DW just loves him, so we will be going to a concert, and sitting in box seats - a first for me - like a virgin. Actually, after my last experience at the Civic Center, I just figured it would be nice to have seats that allowed you to get up and go to the bathroom without climbing over 50 people, if the need arose. Well, it does happen.
OK, somehow we get around to talking about bodily functions all too often. However, I won't be going to that oriental buffet before this show. Some of you may remember my last experience. I'll spare you having to look it up; it wasn't that spectacular and I did not have an accident. :) OK, now I'm really leaving. Have a great day, Toodles!

I think you made the right decision to head out in the rain today (although I think 3:30 A.M. is a particularly cruel and punishing time for setting an alarm!) I've committed to running my long training runs on the weekends, rain or shine. I do this mostly because most races will not cancel unless there's severe/dangerous weather forecasted, and I want to be prepared to run in the rain if I have to and know which adjustments to gear I need to make. I've been pretty lucky lately with my weekend runs - no significant rainfall with just a few sprinkles here and there. But I know It's just a matter of time before I'm caught in a downpour, I'm afraid. Fortunately, I'm not a sugar cube. I won't melt. (Love the running Mary Poppins visual, by the way!)

Wow .. Don Williams... he's a major lasting talent. Yep, skipping the bun left you room for the cheezits so that's a fair trade off. You and this running thing you do.... I'm always so impressed. I get the 'where to hide' the snacks or demotivate task. I bought some 'goldfish' the other day and tucked them under the ziplock bags/foil/etc in the bottom drawer. Completely forgot about then until I read about your cheezits. Thanks. A lot. Just Kidding.

You're so brave, if I tried running in the full-out monsoon here, I'd slip and break my hip or something....

You are way more determined than I am - I would not have let that second thought trump the extra 1 1/2 hours of sleep!

Awesome - I woke up tired with a sore lower back...BUT dragged myself to the gym and ended up with a good workout so it IS mind over body! LOL
