revvit's Journal, 05 January 2018

Just came back from one week in the hospital. I had been getting exceptionally tired and short of breath. Turns out I have a very weak heart due to an aortic valve problem. They're "tuning me up" to get me ready for valve replacement surgery. So--my daily weigh-in now is about my my water weight for the congestive heart failure relief. I have quite a ways to go, looks like. It's interesting that keto way of eating for the first half of the year did wonders for my blood work numbers. O f course that didn't help the hidden aortic valve problem very much. But when my husband broke his leg in August I was unable to stay on the keto way, an I also had to work much harder every day. several other stressful family events occurred and--voila--my heart said enough already! For now i have to be on the standard heart healthy diet, but when things settle down after surgery i will want to talk to a keto-knowledgeable nutritionist to see if I could do well on a modified low carb diet. After all, I still have to deal with type2 diabetes. I've missed everyone and will try to keep up with how you are all doing.

H Revvit. All the investigation I have done on diets for diabetes and heart disease point to the fact that saturated fat molecules inflame the endothelium of blood vessels, which can lead to shortness of breath, impaired circulation, diabetes, heart attacks, etc. For us human animals FIBER is our friend. The more fiber the better. There was a recent study done by Harvard on this issue: https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2009/08/low-carb-diets-linked-to-atherosclerosis-and-impaired-blood-vessel-growth/

Selbygirl6, I don't know about the studies, but my blood vessels are in very good shape, which points to a good outcome for valve replacement surgery. The weakness of my heart is due to the long term effects of an undiscovered congenital defect I was born with. Two of my children have it too. I will certainly discuss it with my doctor.
