FullaBella's Journal, 04 November 2013

Saturday and Sunday were gorgeous weather wise. Sunny, a little cool in the morning but nice and comfortable in the afternoon and I spent all available daylight hours outside trying to regain a sense of peace and order in my back yard. With the glass totems and fall flowers and a repurposed door project it was starting to edge toward chaos.

Saturday night presented colliding charity events so I chose the closest geographically: bingo. I haven't played bingo in over 20 years. Now I remember why. Just not my game. Gently used dobber for sale... anyone?

Sunday dinner was baked ham with stuffing, sweet potato casserole, biscuits and gravy. All homemade and not bad if I say so myself. DH was happy. My thrill in all of it was discovering butternut squash. Oh my gosh - where has this been all my life? Fabulous. I had been craving yellow squash, zucchini and onions when I decided to embark on my adventure in the produce section. Still craving that dish and can't wait to try the 'spaghetti' squash I picked up - another new dish for me.

The rain and grey skies returned today. I looked toward the heavens and thanked them for the beautiful weekend. And I thanked my 'gut' for telling me to make the most of yesterday and saving the 'indoor cleaning tasks' for today.

That is another 'whew, much easier' recognition from a year ago. As late as last summer I would pay someone to change the bed linens for me because it was so hard on me to do it myself. We have a split mattress adjustable bed and walking around and around it lifting the mattresses and heavy California king blankets and spread would totally wear me out. My back and legs would ache and I'd have to sit down and catch my breath at least 5-6 times during the hour it took to complete something so simple.

Also discovered - I no longer need the suspenders to hold the fitted sheet on the mattress; my weight isn't pulling it down anymore.

As they say - it's the little things in life. They add up.

DH - well, I'd say he's being a perfect terror today but then again.. no one's perfect. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Over and out,
Bells

Hi Bella, sounds like you had a really nice weekend. We had a few parties but only made one also. DH has a inner ear infection that is keeping him out of the party mood. I would like to share my butternut squash recipe. I cut it into small cubes (cooks faster and gets sweeter). I massage the cubes with coconut oil and then rub the oil into my skin. I sprinkle with Cumin (a couple of teaspoons and salt. Cook on about 350-375 for 30-40 mins. Add dried cherries and cook another 10 mins. I'm the only one that eats it so I put it in a zip lock and eat it instead of potatoes all week. Just a 1/4-1/2 cup worth with a steak or pork chop or salmon...yum. xxxxx

Mmmmmm - you do sound like a great cook. Glad you got to enjoy all the sunshine you could over the week-end; indoor chores will ALWAYS be there :) And isn't it nice that you can change that massive bed by yourself. My sister only has a double but she finds it difficult to do herself, running round and round to talk this, pull that, etc so I usually do it for her. And DH is being DH himself I suppose. You've put up with worse - thank goodness for mushyface and a good soaking tub.

...and have you tried the acorn squash? My fave is spaghetti squash because it's versatile...until you get to soups. Then it butternut all the way! There's a roasted pear (or apple) and butternut squash soup that it phenom! Listening to that sweet internal voice is easier when I'm not in a food haze. Glad you listened to yours and enjoyed the outdoors. And big CONGRATS on the bed linens. I didn't even assoicate the slipping fitted sheet with weight, though I've been wondering why it's not slipping so much lately - thanks!

It was a nice weekend here as well and spent a lot of time outdoors too. Especially before the snow flies. Hate winter cold and snow. I'm hoping we'll have another mild winter. I'm not much of a squash eater but do buy it and bake/microwave it with some SF syrup, butter and cinnamon. delicious.

Butternut squash... one of my favorites right up there with acorn squash. If you haven't tried acorn squash, I recommend you giving it a whirl. It is a little more dense and nuttier tasting than the butternut - sooo tasty! That's wonderful that you are noticing some very concrete and real evidence of how your weight loss is improving your health and life in general. All of the compliments are nice to hear but having something tangible is much better reinforcement.
