mrsmole's Journal, 30 August 2014

Had a low calorie day yesterday as planned with lot of fat calories, also as planned. I was wiped out by about 7:30PM and didn't make it to the gym, but I did do an extra dog walk, so that's 30 minutes of walking and I'll count it.

Got to the gym this AM with a killer workout and treadmill. That makes 4 gym visits plus daily walks with dogs, and 3 days I got in double dog walks.

I broke down and ordered a blood ketone testing device because all the reading I'm doing swears that the urine sticks are not accuate. I was on the fence -- my argument against was, "If I'm losing weight, who cares how purple my ketone sticks are?" but my argument for was, "I want to see accurate numbers."

The data geek in me won out in the end. The device itself is dirt cheap, $14 shipped, but the testing strips are $2.40 each, so I think I will read the directions quite carefully -- and twice -- before I start stabbing myself to do blood tests. LOL. I'll likely only test twice a week to be certain I'm on the right track. If I'm not, I can adjust my diet accordingly.

The idea is not to waste too much time eating the wrong thing if you're not at the right level of ketosis. Ideal is between 1.5-3.0 for the blood result. More than 3.0 is not going to result in more weight loss and under 1.5 means you could be doing better.

Learning is fun!

P.S. Measure your salad dressing on a scale, not using a tablespoon, not even a measuring one! I just weighed out dressing to take to a restaurant and I was shocked at just how little "2 TBSP" is when you use the 28 grams that supposedly weighs! Wow, that's nothing. So weigh your dressings by the gram before you put it on your salad. If you use a spoon, even the right kind, you are likely over-serving yourself and under-counting your calories!!

I read your journal entry. I found it interesting. I am on the Omni diet, I'm in my 5th week. My son is on Atkins, he said he pees on a mosquito strip, very cheap. I've never peed on anything except pregnancy sticks, lol. I think if you are gonna work out you cannot do it on a low calorie day. In fact, you loose less because it takes from your muscle instead of fat. But when you are not eating any sugar, eat low carbs and proteins. Your body will take from the stored fat. That is my humble opinion

Thanks for the awesome recipes, Gramma!!

Me too.. Copy pasting those recipes to try. Thanks Gramma. I checked on my salad dressing bottles and some say 28-30 grams and others measure in ml. I'll have to watch that... I used to use the scale to measure. I got lazy and just used the spoon so I'll have to get back to doing it right. Thanks for the reminder...

Draglist, I hate when I eat out and have to guess! Lately, I've been bringing pre-measured salad dressing with me. It's a pain, but just until I get my Atkins into high gear. You and I make a salad exactly the same way!

You are indeed a data geek! But if it works - why not?

Mrsmole, I've found myself wishing that Bolthouse (or anyone!) would make single serving packets of their most popular dressings. I tend to stay away from single serve anything because of the packaging excess. In a case like this though it would be worth the splurge. If something like that were available in restaurants - even at an additional cost, I'd happily pay it!

I'm quite new to FatSecret. Are there many other members following a ketogenic diet?

Josh, I'm not sure, but that's a great question. I do know that I was shocked to learn how many of my buddies on here were insulin resistant like I am. I know that a lot of people do Atkins or other low card/high fat diets, but I'm not sure how many of them are as into the Ketosis as I am. I've done so much reading in the last two weeks, I could go live lectures on the topic!

Make a video, MrsMole. We could watch it. :)

There are tiny plastic containers that are good for salad dressing, just be careful that they seal well.

You want her to video the stick test or measuring the salad dressing? ;-)

@Eddie - LOL. MrsMole is a speaker. She said she could give lectures on the topic (Ketosis). So she could videotape her speech and link it to her journal. Just a thought.

LOL to all. I may just give a presentation on this topic and explain it in a video. That's a great idea. I will do it my next opportunity at my Toastmasters Club. Video taping the pee test is funny, Eddie. Thanks for the idea - just kidding.
