HCB's Journal, 07 March 2017

Happy Tuesday, my Best Buddies:

I am excited to see I am back on track for one full week with lowered calories and targeted macros (averaged 67% fat, 25% protein and 8% carbs) - down 3 pounds on the Idiot Boxes. I am on my way to the gym for a workout and then will be off to a long day at work.

May I ask about the folks who just post daily photos of their food? It is a trend recently - do they log their food? Is it hard to come here and see food photos for those of us who are fasting? Not everything people post is always healthy - I see processed foods, too.

Just sayin' - no harm meant, just curious!

Sometimes my phone posts a photo of my food when I'm trying to scan the barcode using the app. But you are correct, some food photos are very off putting. I think the older photos keeps showing back up, because someone is just going through and hitting the Support heart on random items.

@evil1nside, I noticed the increase in pictures but they do not bother me at all. I actually enjoy many of them. I'm not looking for a way to turn them off and find no need for me to do so. The pictures reflect on the posters and are not an inconvenience for this viewer...

Sent a message to the powers that be about the food pictures. I rarely am able to get posts. I suggested that they create a link where everyone can go to post their pictures if they want to share. Similar to going to the recipe section for dindin ideas.

what is an Idiot Box

Guilty. I totally post my food photos. I think it helps with my accountability. Also, it gives some people ideas for food themselves. I fast too. But, even if you fast, at some point you have to eat. I guess if you see photos of food that you find offensive, you could just scroll past it or you can point it out to the person that you find their food selection counter-productive. Of course, not everyone is on the same path to health. Some are LCHF while others are CICO. Frankly, if someone is committed to coming to this site daily to log their food, even with photos, then you have to applaud them for the effort. It's much easier to eat garbage and not record it...

I find the food photos amusing. - whether gross or gorgeous, they're always interesting.

I think they're interesting too, but I can't get anything else. I see no journals from newbies. Nothing. So it does get frustrating.

Just to be clear about my intent with the mention of photos - I am not against it or criticizing anyone - I just notice it is a trend that I find sort of weird. I log all my food in the food diary so I can see exactly what and how much I am consuming so i c= easily can look back at my meals. The photos seem to keep it a "food focus" rather than a "healthy focus" as though people want to re-live their pleasure from eating which for me seems to perpetuate the food obsession - but this is just how I think.

I think the food photos are just plain weird. I love to host dinner parties, and one of my friends always wants to take a photo of her plate to show it off -- and I have banned such photos in my home. Everyone eats, so why on earth is this special enough to post on social media? It's not for a cookbook or restaurant trying to entice customers. In other words, food is a mundane and regular part of life, and IMO it's kinda creepy that people are sharing photos of what they're digesting.

Can I ask you if you're on a ketogenic diet

I sent a comment to the site, explaining how the food pictures seem to be sticking around. The response said they are working on some new ways to display the featured feed. They also said: "You can also help us freshen the images displayed by sharing more content, especially by taking photos using our app and tagging them with food. If you can participate like this and encourage others in your network to do the same it should really improve the experience." I replied to them that, while I normally do not mind people food pictures, I would not encourage people to do it. It sounded like a sick joke to make folks who are trying not to eat too much look at picture after picture of food!

And I find that I am not enticed but grossed out by what some people will eat - no offense but I don't get a good feeling just seeing what is being eaten. There doesn't even seem to be calorie content or tips that go with these photos.

I agree with you, abbadabba. I scroll past the food pictures as quick as I can.

Though I think it has been really fascinating to see the food everyone is eating, I do not spend too much time looking at the photos because I tend to get off track wanting something that is not apart of my current diet. As some people here have commented, not everything that is being photographed is necessarily "healthy", but I think it is important to remember that not everyone has the goal of eating totally clean or 100% organic, etc. We are all at different stages and weights on this site. Not all of our goals are going to be the same. So while these foods may not be healthy in one person's book, they might be much healthier than some of the foods the poster used to eat. Though everyone on here may not wish to see slews of food photos in their feed (for whatever the reason may be) I really hope we are all being supportive of others who are not yet where we are diet-wise.

The response I got from them on the food pictures..... you can change your feed preference to 'Everyone' or 'Buddies' rather than 'Featured' which should give you more recent content. My question.... does anyone have "featured"? I don't. Only buddies or everyone. As you know I'm not the sharpest tack in the pack so can someone walk me thru the steps to get there. Thanks.

oh my :/ i'm guilty too sorry... i log most of my plates by photo too. as i record what i ate most of the time later after, it's a good reminder to me not to "cheat" on quantity or forget something as i lack of memory :( i like sharing with everybody for support but i guess i should go on private buddy mode... i did not realize it was inconvenience for others :/

I had Featured on because I like to skim through all the postings, encouraging folks here and there, even if they are not yet buddies. I have switched over to the Buddies setting because I can live without ever seeing that bluish-green quinoa again. :)

I just wrote to them not a minute ago and told them I only have buddies and everyone. Nothing about Featured. I feel as if I'm missing something. If you have the time, could you send me a pm and walk me thru the process. I miss seeing others' posts. Something has changed lately. I've not been in my settings in months.
