Hermiones Mom's Journal, 13 April 2016

Ate pretty carby today, mostly because I am not feeling at all well. Either I'm having a monumental allergy attack or I have a sinus infection. I'm betting on the sinus infection and I started antibiotics this morning. I also tried to plan for being able to eat both an orange and a grapefruit today, but only managed the orange. I still haven't found any vitamin C that doesn't have lactose but is palatable. I just can't afford to be sick right now, and once again, half the people I know have some kind of upper respiratory/laryngitisy nastiness, and I would guess I've acquired it as well. What a drag.

And exactly why did the Blackhawks score a goal for the opposing team to end the first playoff game 1-0 in favor of the St. Louis Blues?

It's no wonder I don't feel well.

You can easily make your own lactose free high vitamin C teas. For instance, you can use real rose hips, common mallow, wild geranium leaves, blackberry/dewberry/brambleberry leaves, fireweed, wild sorrel, violet leaves & flowers, or Hibiscus flowers (beware - hibiscus flower tea also lowers blood sugars quickly and impressively in most, use only ONE glass of that). Most of those can even be picked free if you know what you are looking for. Or pick and steam a plate full of lambsquarters - more than a days dose of c in a mess of those - Or scrape and eat a prickly pear pad (the green part) Or you can buy an organic lemon or lime, wash it, and grate a wedge into your tea. Be sure to rinse teeth after any tea high in C, because like most acids, it should not stay on your teeth. Slippery elm, aloe juice, wild geranium will all help with the throat, and clearing mucus, though should not be taken when pregnant, as can cause miscarriage.

Not a doctor or herbalist, just someone who has eaten wild since I was a kid. Grew up knowing a hundred things you could safely eat and how & need to get back out foraging.

I like EmergenC - powder that you put in water. No lactose but it does have a little sugar. 1000 mg C, 1 gr carb.

Thanks everyone. CathyWall -- you are the coolest. I'm so impressed by people who know this stuff. I use lemon and lime in my water all day, and no that it's warmed up, I actually make my own low-sugar lime soda with selzer, lime juice, mint and a teeny bit of sugar. I'm doing a little better this morning, so I am pretty sure that taking the antibiotics was the right move. I also took an extra aspirin this morning and that really seemed to help a lot. I've got one more day at home before I leave for Iowa, so I'm really hoping by tomorrow morning I'll be on the mend. Thanks again.

I drink hot water with lemon juice (from a lemon), three drops of stevia and sprinkle in cinnamon and cayenne all the time. Vitamin C heavy, no lactose. Delicious to boot.

Katsolo -- sounds good. I can't do stevia (allergic), but I can do this with a little sugar. Will try it out.

Bad news on the "flu" and those pesky St Louis Blues...don't worry though, the BH have a great team. :-)
