Good Morning, FS Warriors! Ughh, speed workout this morning. The alarm was set for 3:30, but again, it was almost 4 before I dragged my a$$ out of bed. Someday I'm going to sleep for a whole 8 hours and see what it feels like. Since the lack of beauty rest has already taken its toll, and can't be undone, there is no hope there. But, I might feel better. Did 400M (1/4 mile) repeats. It didn't take very long to realize that I don't want to move fast at 4 in the morning; in fact, I don't want to move at all. But I did. By the time I got done with the warmup, the intervals and the cool down period, it was basically a 50 minute workout, and I had done 3.17 miles.

Man, you should have heard the coyotes this morning! They were going nuts on two fronts; one being right on the edge of town. I was afraid that a pack had taken somebody's small dog away. It sure sounded like that could have been happening. I have a friend who has lost two miniature dobermans to coyote's; she even saw the coyote carrying her last little dog across the field, and she was powerless to do anything about it. I don't like stories like that, and really felt bad for her. I think after the first one though, I wouldn't have let the dog out without being there with him, or have him on a leash, whether I was in a bathrobe or not. And perhaps I would even take my two friends, Smith & Wesson, along for the walk.

Tomorrow is an easy 3 mile run and then a rest day. Actually, the plan calls for running a 5K race this weekend, with two rest days leading up to that. I'm not doing that, so I'll probably do another easy run and then run a 5K at home. I know it won't be quite as fast without the competitive atmosphere of a real race, but I'll still get the run in. I've noticed my speed has really declined over the last couple years. I've been training to run slow. I should have been incorporating speed runs at least once a week into my workouts. Oh crap! I just went back and looked at my training schedule and I was supposed to run those 400M repeats at my 5K pace, and I ran them all out. That means that I ran them at 3 min/mile faster than I would have or should have. No wonder I'm so worn out right now. Oh well, I'll live. It wasn't that long ago that I ran the Steamboat Classic 4 mile race at a 9:50 pace, and the 5K at a 9:30 pace. Now, I would be lucky to run it at a 12:00 min pace. I never trained very hard or very intelligently for those races. I'm going to see if training hard and intelligently can compensate for being a few years older, and manage to run those races at a 9 min/mile pace. If it can't be done, it can't be done, but at least I'll know I gave it a shot. That being said, don't expect those kind of speeds out of me in the near future - especially for a half. I would be absolutely tickled pink to pull off a half marathon at a 12 min. pace.

OK, so I always start by journals with nothing to say and end up writing a book. I guess if I wasn't so long-winded, I wouldn't have over 700 journal entries. It is what it is. I guess as long as some of you keep reading my rhetoric, I'll keep on writing them. Have a great day. Toodles!

I enjoy reading books! That is so sad about your friend's dogs...I'm with you. I'd have them on a leash and/or have my two friends with me (of course I'd have to purchase and learn how to use those two friends first).

Great journal. I applaud you for getting up so early to go for a run. And if you did sleep for 8 hours you would probably feel tired all day. Your pace times are fantastic.

I know I most certainly would not like waking up that early to run myself, so much respect for getting it done! And I happen to think a 12 min mile is a great pace :) We have a large population of coyotes here, too. I live in the country and I hear them all the time. My dog is 75lbs, so we haven't had a whole lot of issues with them bothering around my yard. We have no rabbits, no squirrels, and no groundhogs because of the coyotes though, and also no stray cats... There was one time a couple years ago that I walked out to a coyote waiting for me behind the barn watching, my kids were very small at the time which really worried me. We ended up hunting that one down, and boy was he big. Possibly a coyote/wolf hybrid, which we are having issues with here. Anywho, look at me hijacking your journal and rambling on and on lol. Have a wonderful day!

You Sir, are dedicated! 3:30? Such a cruel hour of the morning! I think training smarter will pay off for you, pace wise. I have been running almost daily since January, and only increased my pace the tiniest amount until I started a real training plan with intervals and speed work a month ago and have already cut 1:37 off my mile pace in 4 weeks and I'm running longer runs than ever before. I'm hoping to finish my half-marathon in mid-October at about a 10:20 pace, give or take, where four weeks ago, I would have been tickled pink with a 12:00 pace. Oh, what a difference a month of smart training can make! Good for you for getting up and making it happen! Impressive level of dedication!

You crack me up, about Smith & Wesson!!! Good luck on your 5K coming up, and you deserve to get 8 hours sleep as sleep is important when you are trying to drop weight. The body needs all the rest it can bet, especially from the "running man." :)

You are dedicated, need to start following your lead again and pull myself away from my coffee, toasty covers, and computer in the am. Generally coyotes are afraid of people and llamas. But be careful....We used to have problems with them, killed 3 of my goats. We kept a shotgun handy, shells separate but accessible to an adult to scare them away. I'd have to shoot at them many mornings in the winter so the girls could walk out to the school bus that stopped in our driveway. Caught a few in the butt with birdshot. They liked the protection from the weather on our wrap around front porch..where we lived the closest house was about a mile away cross the fields, more by road.

Haha, Yolanda, you can hijack my journal anytime! Yeah, since the coyotes tend to travel in packs, they can be a bit intimidating. Well, Sweet, I'm hoping all that works for someone in their 60's also; we shall see. I'd still be tickled with a 12:00 pace for the half. LOL, Socolova, it's not because I'm so dedicated, I just remember how painful it is to start over again. And yes, Wholefoodnut, it would be very scary if the coyotes were camped around my porch. I think I'd be setting up some up some electric discouragers. You were much kinder than I would have been; I wouldn't have used bird shot. They're not an endangered species, but they would be "in danger" around my house. I ate dog in the Philippines a couple of times, in order not to insult my hosts. I don't imagine coyote would taste much different. :)

Also DH felt I was safer with birdshot. I'm right handed but lifted eyed. I tend to forget to shoot left handed. Put a 22 shell through the van once doing that....

Hope DH wasn't in it at the time. I know if I was, I'd have to be buying another pair of running shorts.

Empty van.. In 22 years I don't think I ever saw him run.. LOL. I'm sure he wouldn't have running shorts even if we've been divorced for a long time.

Be careful, coyotes are not nice.

Nursing Home Ministry cancelled tonight. Events coordinator really sick. Not enough help to move all the residents in and out for the event. But she made a point of telling us that she wants to schedule us at least once a month, twice if we could, for the rest of this year and next year as well. We're trying to keep the ministry nights to once a month, but other now three or four other nursing homes want us to come, so we will probably have to go to at least twice a month. I don't mind doing more, but we'd have to do it on another day than Wednesday.

HATE howling coyotes. I know, they are just doing what they do but it never sounds like they're up to any good, you know? The birds here were all hanging on the phone wires .. looked like something out of Hitchcock.. Fall is definitely coming. Love your journals, keep 'em coming!

Weird Bella, I missed listening to them when I moved to the city. Now I have the trains if the wind is right.
18 Sep 14 by member: wholefoodnut
Jeri .. the trains are as bad as coyotes... I guess it just sounds lonesome. I know the wolf is the loner and coyotes are in packs but all of them howl and it sounds like pain, sadness, someone leaving in the middle of the night, etc. I'm about two blocks from some tracks. I try to focus on the fact I'm only about two blocks from the church who's lovely bells sooth me.

I have church bells one direction and trains another but only if the wind is blowing the right way. To me they are kind of peaceful, woke up to rolling thunder echoing in the river bluffs and the train whistles the other morning, just snuggled with a dog and my coffee listening.

We have a train that comes within a couple blocks of the schoolhouse. He loves to blow the horn, and we don't have any flashing lights or barriers at the RR crossing, so he gets to exercise it quite well. However, the school is so insulated, we don't even hear that unless we open the windows. Otherwise, all I hear is the dog snoring.
