DairyKing's Journal, 28 January 2013

50 degrees Fahrenheit this morning! Almost the end of January. Will be low 60's tomorrow. Day after tomorrow high 30F. You gotta love Illinois weather! Chance of snow later this week. Really? We don't have 4 seasons; we have 365. It rained all day yesterday. When I went out early in the morning, icicles were hanging off all the vehicles. When I went out later in the afternoon, all had melted, it was warm and foggy. I don't know how much truth there is to the notion that going from hot to cold and back again makes people sick, but if it does, that would explain a lot.

Started my run/walk program again last night. It's not quite as intense as the C25K (Couch to 5K), because it's not really meant to bring you up to running a 5K; it's meant to bring you up to running 30 minutes at a time. After that, if you want to run a 5K, it's up to you. The program assumes you can walk 30 minutes at a shot when you begin - no other prerequisites. I got it from Runners World years ago; now they want you to pay for it. If anyone wants a copy, I'd be happy to send it to you.

I've been trying to convince DW to let me buy an old project truck to fix up. She's against it, but she's usually against me getting into any new project. I usually convince her to let me do what I want, knowing that she will always bring it up when we have an argument. It's the price I have to pay for being so versatile. Ah well, what a tangled web we weave. I wonder what I'll have to promise her I will get done this time.

Still waging the food wars. It's easier during the week than on the weekends, I am sure. I've done pretty well. It's always been about self-talk and weighing the benefits versus the cost. There are 1000's of diets, gimmicks and techniques out there, but anyone that has been down this road knows, sometimes you just have to gut it out - no matter what it takes. It's like quitting smoking - you can wear the patch, chew the gum, and smoke the electronic cigarettes; you're not quitting until you truly make up your mind that you want to quit. Same with dieting; we can justify that extra helping, that sweet roll or candy bar, and we can whine all day long about how hard it is to quit eating so much, but the bottom line: "Is the benefit worth the sacrifice?" Wah, it just hurts too much! Oh, suck it up! Toodles!

Best of luck getting prepped for that race. And I really want to thank you for something you said today - "sometimes you have to gut it out". That is exactly what I needed to hear today!

Ok, I have been waging a war in my mind with the cheesecake in my fridge. You have just solidified my resolve... Thank you!! Good luck getting ready for your run!

Your words are too true! They are something I have learned in the past year...you can make all the excuses you want, but in the end, you just have to make the decision to stick to it! That's the only way to see results. Your weather sounds like our weather in KY. School was cancelled Friday because of the ice and frigid temperatures. Today it is raining and I didn't even need to wear a jacket to work. crazy, huh? Hope the wife is more agreeable to your new project!

Ahh words of wisdom! SUCK IT UP.... Thank you! The food war, if we could only quit eating like we quit smoking.... you can do it! I like the truck idea. I wanted one too, always can use a truck to tinker with. What part of illionis are you in? I grew up just north of chicago about 20 minutes along the lake. I goback about 3 times a year or more.

365 seasons. Love that, DK! Will you get a run/walk in for your 60 degree weather? Funny that game that you and your wife play. And you are versatile. That one wasn't in your personality report, was it? Have a great evening.

Gut it out or keep the gut :-) yep - if one isn't ready to change about the only patch that WILL work is one over the mouth...

I don't know about you but I definitely took advantage of the weather and cleaned out our garage and 15 passenger van... I hope you used part of it to get out and get your exercise in! You are so right too about eating. You can suck it up or keep sucking it in. lol!

I love your reference to the weather! In Colorado, we always say, "If you don't like the weather, wait 5 minutes!" It is snowing here tonight and so you should have a much more realistic dose of winter in the next couple of days. Enjoy the warm before the storm and I hope you are able to talk your wife into getting you a project truck! It is just the thing to keep you busy and moving!

DK, what a great journal! I'm with Bren, you guys do seem to talk us into most anything or ... Is it that we love you so danged much we let you think you've sweet talked us just so we can say yes to what you want even if we think it is a horrible idea? Hmmm. Don't know. Making healthy choices every day is a challenge. Week days are easier for me too. During the week when I'm tired I go to bed. On the weekends DH and I tend to stay up later, more tv, more opportunity for snacking I guess. Crazy weather. Guess I should stop complaining about our snow.

Jeepers - check out that weather! It was actually decent here at the beginning of the week, but will get down to -50F windchill tonight. Ugh.
