Wednesday already...wow!
I just finished a marathon of watching Dr. Jason Fung's 6 part lecture. Whew! That's a lot of data! There's a lot of food for thought there, and may lead to another tweak in the plan.
One of my young friends came over yesterday with her 4-year-old son. He's a bright and beautiful child with an inquisitive mind. I hadn't really planned on giving them lunch, but my friend mentioned that she was hungry, so I pulled out some leftover chili and cole slaw. Of course, they were keto-friendly versions. Happy to report that they were still a hit. :)
While I was reheating the chili, I had an epiphany. I was telling my friend that it was hardly worth cooking any more, since my capacity for food has so diminished. I spend 30-45 minutes cooking only to sit down, take 4 or 5 bites, and I'm full. Sadly, I don't do well with leftovers. They tend to sit in the fridge until they grow fur, then get thrown out. So...what if I just eat mostly raw? Maybe cook up some boiled eggs and a couple of pounds of chicken thighs, and have them readily available for my meal each day. Something to ponder. It's hard to believe that this former foodie has gotten so blase about food. Now it's just fuel, not a driving passion. I never thought I would feel this way about it.
It's going to be hot today, so I really need to be conscious of hydration. Stay cool, buddies, drink water, and stay the course!

Great loss Mskestrela! That plan is exactly what I have been doing, I precooked the meats in a crockpot, packaged the meat into meal size portions and froze it. I boil a dozen eggs a week and toss them in a zip-lock with a little water, salt and pepper. I pull out a different meat type daily to thaw and then plan my salad, or my nibbler plate around that. The amount of time spent cooking in my previous life is now spent improving my mind and body as I spend more time reading and moving. Freedom! It's a beautiful thing!

Thanks, Ches!

Thanks, Deb. I think I'll try doing what you and Wanna do. I think I'd be perfectly happy with a couple of boiled eggs and a few sticks of celery. LOL

Thank you Wanna! I'll give it a try. Since I'm only eating one meal a day for now, frying eggs hasn't come up. I might do breakfast for dinner tonight, since I have some low carb pancakes in the freezer. ;)

If you get tired of boiled eggs, you can whip up a couple and cook them in the microwave. (I like to add a spoonful of salsa for added flavor.) They aren't quite as good as scrambled and fried, but you don't have to dig out the skillet and add more heat to the kitchen.

This is what has me confused about fasting: are our reduced appetites putting us in the VLCD suppressed metabolism mode or are our reduced appetites corrected and telling us "You don't need that. Look at all this energy stored on your upper arms!"

There are two types of fasting. Fasting for 24hrs or longer to dramatically reduce total calories, and Intermittent Fasting to not necessarily reduce calories, but to maximize autophagy and lower glycogen reserves. When you reduce your calories dramatically through fasting, you will pull from your fat stores, it's why you put it there, and without that insulin spike from sugar, you will use fat to offset the missing incoming energy. Fasting can be uncomfortable for some as hunger comes in waves with each wave a bit stronger than the last up to a certain point where it seems to peak. You learn to recognize the symptoms and work with it. Intermittent Fasting is about maximizing the autophagy process where we clean out and replace old and damaged cells with new ones. For a Diabetic this is critical, as insulin resistance in cells is hand-in-hand with diabetes (Dr. Fung discusses this in his book). The term "Starvation Mode" is often used incorrectly. It is a real condition, but not when you have fat energy reserves to pull from. Starvation Mode is when your body starts to cannibalize muscle tissue and essential organ fat for energy, think of TV commercials for starving kids and you'll get the picture.

LOL! I'm going with the energy in my upper arms! I recall the listless no energy feeling of reduced calorie intake, it's very different from the energizer bunny mode that I am feeling right now. Metabolism slowing down makes you feel like you are swimming in mud to do anything, right now I have the urge to MOVE, go find something to do, kind of a restless almost frenetic urge to be doing something. There lies the difference between starvation mode and activated fight or flight mode.

@debra, fasting or full fasting is definitely not for everyone, I much prefer intermittent fasting where I'm not cutting calories, just reducing the time window in which they're eaten. I think full fasting can leave you thinking about food way too much....but it is effective, and if it works for some, more power to them.

@ladyindenim Just wanted to let you know "Suppressed metabolism mode" is a lie. Its a fear tactic used by the industry to keep you asking THEM what to do and keep you buying THEIR garbage. Your metabolism is dynamic. It is ALWAYS changing based on the situation. You cant do it permanent damage. Only ACTUAL pancreas and thyroid damage can do that. VLCD diet will NOT hurt your metabolism.

What Mahjon said is EXACTLY correct. Your body will NOT reach "starvation mode" Until you are WELL below 4% Body fat. THAT is when you are in trouble.

Nice loss.

Decreased resting metabolic rate correlated with decreased calorie diets has been measured and documented. I just wanted to be sure my body wasn't on a 48 hour clock.

I read an interesting article about starvation mode from one of the people that argue that it's a real condition, just not a physical/physiological one (except in actual instances of starvation as pointed out by Mahjohn and Knuckles). "Food Seeking Behavior", I believe was how it was described. Oh my, a dieter might want food they're not supposed to have, I can't imagine such pain and torment!

Starvation mode is Chicken Little and decreased RMR is the apple.

It's a good thing everyone is correct....Reduced Metabolic Rate...check. Starvation Mode..check. They are all correct, and yet both completely different. Your body has a lot of processes that function to keep us going. When we don't have enough calories....certain processes shut down, is it essential to keep all processes going all the time...no, your body will cycle some on...some off, depending on resources, so yes....you have a Reduced Metabolism, but it's ok.

Light bulb moment. I am not using calories to digest food on my fast days, but still expending energy for respiration, perspiration, elimination, and oxygenation, communication, and education!
