Debbie Cousins's Journal, 17 October 2019

Well, I learned a lesson this morning! I decided to indulge in the "normal" breakfast I was eating EVERY day for several weeks: Sausage & Egg on an English Muffin with butter and mayo. I knew it would be carby, of course, but I had no idea that it would be so high in calories. If I would have just had the sausage and egg, it would have been THREE-HUNDRED-AND-ONE calories LESS! If there wasn't an English muffin, I wouldn't have had the calories from the mayo and butter. Won't do that again anytime soon! Total breakfast (including the cream from a cup of tea) was 625 calories! No wonder I was gaining weight so fast!

Nice sleuthing on your own choices. Sometimes we need to do that for sure.

Maybe look for the flatter English muffins? Lower calorie substitutions is progress too.

Debbie, get creative. I buy English muffins that are 120 calories. When I want an egg I fry without added oil and have 1 slice of bacon. Don't use butter or mayo. The muffin with egg and bacon is still only 245 calories. I like a dash of hot sauce on top. I find the muffin moist enough without added condiments.

You can always use Mission's 45 calorie wraps. This is my go to bread substitute.

I've done that. Several times. I mark it up as a learning experience. Yesterday I had half of a flax muffin (recipe I got from you). Filling. I love. BUT I've learned high in calories so I half or/and watch what I have with it.

This is why tracking calories is critical. Learning these things makes eating well so much easier. Great NSV!

Debbie...suggestion? Thomas' LIGHT English muffins are 100 calories each and taste the same to me. Also, Kraft Olive Oil mayo is 50 calories a serving (1/2 the calories) if you must have mayo. I bought some and it is sitting in the cabinet, unopened. I cut out mayo when I joined FS and watched a ton of calories disappear. Mayo is another problem area for me...as I love tomato sandwiches with mayo. Must. Distance. Myself. From. Mayo. Understand the craving. Onward, friend!
