SoCalPam's Journal, 21 July 2018

I took my dad to the county fair today. We had a great time strolling around looking at everything. He's recently lost 30-some pounds (at age 84!) and he looks and feels great. I'm on my own losing path, so we decided ahead of time that we'd find some sort of protein dish to eat for lunch that we could share, then get one decadent only-to-be-found-at-a-fair item for a splurge.

There were lots of awesome protein choices (the chicken shish kabob could feed a family of four!) but we had our minds set on ribs. My dad is a little fastidious, so he was glad that the ribs were cooked without sauce. I didn't even notice and enjoyed half a rib before discovering the sauce bar. I didn't really need it, so we avoided the extra sugar and calories there. We each ate 2 ribs and had a small lemonade.

Walk, walk, walk... we looked at all the exhibits, especially the wood working, since my dad does some of that, and the minerals, as we both really like rocks. We walked a LOT which was huge for my knees. I had to sit a couple of times, but held up.

We never really found a good "splurge" item. I would have gone for the bacon maple doughnut, but I'm not going to eat a doughnut the size of a dinner plate by myself. Dad decided he didn't want anything else. The Dole whip, which looked great, was $6 and I had pineapple in the fridge at home... I was just too cheap to do it.

Dad was done, so I took him home then went to Baskin Robbins and got one scoop of ice cream with some hot fudge. I am on sugar overload right now!!! So much sugar and I'm so unused to it.

Now I'm home and it's time for a bath and a nap! Best of all, I still have about 600 calories left for the day, so I can eat dinner, relax, and not feel guilty about anything at all.

I'm still surprised that almost nothing at the fair tempted me. It shows how much I've been training my brain! I was allowing myself whatever I wanted and... I didn't want it. The ice cream was awesome, though.

Ahh the Orange County Fair :) Glad you had a good time. I never put sauce on my ribs, so you had them correctly :)

Adefwebserver: My mom was from the North Carolina mountains, so my idea of BBQ sauce is vinegar based. Johnny Rebs is a local chain that has "my" kind of sauce. Thanks to all y'all for the kind words. It was easy to eat clean today! I don't even know why. My brain is all trained, I guess. I was eyeing the produce that was on exhibit and thinking how nice a fig would be, LOL! Fig funnel cake... perfect.

@SoCalPam - Oh I see your point :) I would like vinegar based (rather than molasses based) also.

Isn’t that the truth Pam— once you get used to not caving at every single temptation, it’s like, “not worth it”. Then save if for something you really have a hankering for— like BR. Really good job.

Fun! I go to the fair just for the deep fried cheese curds!

Crazy8cottage, we don't have those at our fair! I would totally try a deep fried cheese curd. A couple of years ago my cousin and I tried the deep fried pickles which were surprisingly good. We had been drinking a little, tho' :)

SoCalPam - you have never had deep fried cheese curds???? Oh no, no, no - how could this be? What is wrong with you Californians? Good grief! There is nothing more indulgent than true county fair deep fried cheese curds. You can get them at restaurants here, but they just aren’t the same as the fair. Please do add this to your bucket list!! 😊😂

I never was a big fan of the fair. But back when we lived in Indiana we used to go to the annual covered bridge festival every year. Indiana is known for many of its old covered bridges. My husband headed straight for the peanut butter ice cream, but my weakness was always the apple dumplings.

A covered bridge fair sounds fabulous! My hubby grew up in Indianapolis, but he's never mentioned such a fair to me. It's probably in Brown County or someplace more rural.

@SoCalPam Fried pickles were something I'd never even heard of until about a year ago. Family from up north were visiting and we took them out on the boat for a nature excursion to look for alligators, birds, and wildlife. Half way through the trip we saw a little outdoor restaurant on shore so we pulled in and my granddaughter (14) got all excited reading the menu and seeing they had fried pickles. So of course we had to order some. I come from a long family of sailors, but who eats fried pickles on board a boat in extreme choppy water. My family does, true sailors, one and all.
