29 yo female. i have struggled with weight my whole life. but especially since college when i started birth control pills. i gained about 25-30lbs in a month and hadn't changed my exercise (competitive sport) or my diet. even though it has been years since i have been off the pill, that is the weight i can't seem to drop.

i have always eaten well and exercised, but as far as weight loss it never seems to matter. i am frustrated with the way i feel and with the health risks that it presents. i have been to doctors and personal trainers and exercise physiologists... and i have followed instructions to the letter... and it doesn't matter. so, here i am. I know I do better with limited carbs and dairy, but haven't managed to be consistent with it for more than a few months. i am trying to be accountable to myself by tracking all my food.

i love the outdoors, camping, hiking, kayaking. i do a lot of yoga. i'm out of the weight training for the moment, but hope to get back into it.

afraid of gaining weight with birth control pills
again, it's a totally personal thing. i went on BCP and gained 30lbs in a month with no other change to my diet and exercise (i was a very competitive athlete at the time). it's been 6 years since i've been off hormonal birth control, and that's the 30 lbs i still struggle with. you couldn't pay me to go back on BCPs (for me they also made me nauseated and made my period longer) that being said, other people don't gain anything and respond well and feel great on them - it all depends on how those particular hormones react with your particular body. i currently use a non-hormonal IUD and i love it - but that's what is right for me... good luck!

Help
i've struggled with the same thing ALee - adding oil, or butter to things i'm already eating is the easiest. sometimes i'll even eat a spoon of coconut oil or put it in tea - it tastes good and i don't need to be hungry to drink tea Smile

Amers - depends on how you set your RDI - i think it probably automatically sets to a maintenance level (someone else may know for sure) - i set mine lower, to the max i want to eat each day, but also below my maintenance level - then i usually aim to hit about 90% of that.

not sure that made any sense. good luck!

winning.
hi all. i was thinking about this quote today, which was given to me years ago by my rugby team captain, but which, i have come back to over and over again.

it's about running, literally. but, i find it so inspiring and motivating on a whole life level, about exercise, about this way of life, about anything you decide to do, really. i needed to read it today, so i thought i'd share... and also, i want to know what motivates you?

"Winning is finishing the distance you set for yourself, however humble it might be. Speed is a gift your parents either gave you or couldn't give you. You had little to say about it, so the time you take to run your distance doesn't say much about your spirit. But endurance and persistence are qualities largely trained and learned.

Finishing is a victory of a strong spirit over weak flesh.

Losing is dropping out for no other reason than a weak will. Quitting in the face of actual potential injury is wisdom, but giving up to moderate inconvenience or mild discomfort is defeat.

WINNING IS MEASURING YOURSELF AGAINST YOURSELF. It is learning to take pride in your improvements, no matter how small. Later it is taking pleasure in more subtle measures of victory which have little to do with time and place.

LOSING IS MATCHING YOURSELF AGAINST EVERYONE ELSE WHO RUNS. This is self defeating, because few people ever win this way, and those who do, don't keep it up for long."

-Joe Anderson "Runner's World" 12/1978
