Quote from a previous comment from me:

Quote:
I have one Kathleen, but it has become too large to be effective, even with it on I managed enlarging my parastomal hernia by too much straining. Because of the bulge it presents under my clothes I wear a very snug compression garment. There is already an opening cut into my abdominal wall and the intestine was pulled through on purpose, it does not take much to push more through...this is kinda creepy...I can push it back in, but the first time I bend over I can feel it slithering back out. It does not pose a health threat, so they will not repair it due to the fact that it will simply happen again. As long as I am not having medical issues with it, they tell me to leave it alone and try not to make it any worse. It's about the size of a cantaloupe.

The rest of this post refers to my colostomy which is a subject not a lot of people discuss. It has a stigma attached to it and many people who have one avoid mentioning it. It saved my life and I have no issues about discussing it when there is need to, right now I have a need to:

Today is day two of my HP experience. In the above post I was referencing an issue with a cantaloupe sized hernia I had developed under my stoma due to a fall I took about 4 weeks post surgery. I have seen several doctors about this issue because it was so large and had my entire abdomen misshapen and lopsided, as I noted in the previous comment, they told me to leave it alone, there was no way to correct it outside of surgery and even the surgery would not be a permanent solution because it would just recur. I asked for help with ab and core workouts for folks who can't do traditional sit-ups and crunches. I got lots of great responses, the best one being Hypopressive Exercise. I did a lot of reading and watching of videos and I began trying to do them. After several failed attempts I got it right, I knew I got it right because my entire midsection contracted in and up and I could actually see the outline of my lower ribcage. When I relaxed the breath, I felt a slithering much like I described in the quote. The contents of my colon were expelled in a rush and MY INTESTINE RETRACTED BACK INTO MY ABDOMINAL CAVITY WHERE IT BELONGS! I was flabbergasted, scared, astounded, ecstatic all at the same time. There was no pain or discomfort, I sat there for a few minutes afraid to move, afraid that movement would make it slither back out. Waited.....nothing. Hmmmm. I stood up and walked to the mirror my abdomen looked like it did about a month after the surgery, before I fell and created the hernia. I showed my hubby, he was amazed and concerned. I did my normal routine all day Sunday...threw feed, weed-eated around the house, moved some more of Mom's stuff. It didn't come back out. Ate, slept, it still where it belongs. Worked all day, lifted tubs of mail, bent, squatted, did 6 more of the Hypopressive exercises, no change. Do you have any idea how HUGE this is???

I realize Mom, that it could have been a bad outcome, I really had no idea how strong the contraction would be. I knew it could damage me but it was a risk I was willing to take, I just had no idea it would FIX it, everything is operating normally, no blockages, no discomfort whatsoever. You are right, it is a miracle.

As far as I can tell from what I have read, the vacuum effect created when properly executed shifts your inner organs back into alignment. I had a part that was where it was not supposed to be and the suction pulled it back in when the rest of my organs settled.

Very cool Debra, glad it worked for you!! As you have probably read there are a lot of medical issues that this can have a positive affect on...for me, my core strength is important to maintain for the sports I enjoy, better results with less stress on my back was a huge benefit.

Thanks so much Steven, seriously, this falls under the category of life changing events, I didn't post it immediately because I needed to wait and see if it was going to be a problem. It may not stay in, as accident prone as I am (graceful as an elephant on a skateboard) It could be forced back out, however, if I increase my core strength before I traumatize anything, it may be strong enough to hold things back. Our bodies are amazing machines if given the proper fuel and maintaince.

Thanks guys, truly, Thank you. Sometimes when you hear something you don't want to hear, like, there's nothing we can do for you, you will just have to learn to live with it. You accept it, manage it as best you can and continue on with as much grace as possible. Then, suddenly out of the blue....when you are working on a different problem, the one you had accepted as the hand you were dealt is gone. I've run out of words to express what I am feeling right now, gonna shut up....

WOW! This is such a good report, a healing indeed!! Gaining an understanding of how amazing our bodies are makes this journey very exciting, please keep us posted on how the core exercises affect this. And, if you would stop wearing those 5 inch stiletto heels when your out throwing feed sacks around, you wouldn't have to worry about the elephant on the skateboard!! ;) ;) ;)

You know I do own about 6 pair of those, needless to say since we moved to the land of dirt driveways and no sidewalks.....I don't get to wear them anymore, they make my legs look great!!!(sigh)

Thank you Suzy, I hope your legs are feeling better! Just for an update, everything is still inside where it belongs and I managed to get my self up to 10 minutes, I could only do 8 in that ten minutes but it was steady . I think I'll make 20 minutes in a week or so!

Hey Debra...I just had coffee with our two HP experts (one a level 2 trainer) and shared your story (and Misty's) with them...firstly, she said that 10 minutes is recommended, 15 minutes max...more isn't any better...lot's more info to update you and others on...for the record my simple HP way is OK but far from optimal...I will get the short notes plus some DO NOT warnings updated into my last post re HP exercises, hopefully later today or tomorrow at the latest. Take care!!
