“A goal without a plan is only a wish.”Unknown. I liked this quote today bc everyone knows I'm a huge planner. BUT, what I really wanna talk about today is a topic I have never seen posted here in all my 3 yrs on FS. Flabby Skin. I've lost a lot of weight at a slow and healthy rate. I have flab on my tummy that overhangs, like an apron and the obligatory bat wings.I have some flab on my inner thigh that's blocking my size 14's from sliding up easily. I've read that lifting weights helps tone theses areas and I've just started to lift/train but I have to say, I kinda don't believe that. I'm asking about this bc it would kinda be weird to have a nice lean body with a lot of flabby saggy skin. Is there a solution other than surgery ? I'm not vain and I can live with sagginess. I'm in my 40's after all but I would like to know I'm doing everything on my end to look and feel great. Anyone else wonder about this or have dealt with this?

I want you to know that there is nothing wrong with expecting to see results for all your hard work. Unfortunately will have to leave the answers (concerning skin flab) to others.

I have started to get that as well. I just started going to the gym to try to help. We'll see what happens. Curious to hear what you find out.

AH yes, losing body fat AND building muscle is the key! I would not say I am lean...but I do have less flabby skin as I increase my weight training work. Things become more compact and we lose inches through weight training. You will firm up many of the problem areas.

redgirl, I'm also battling the "granny wings" and the extra flabby around the middle. Since I've been using the suspension trainer they seem to be decreasing some especially the love handles and some on my upper arms. The gym was helping some, I am planning on starting more free weights and see if that can also help. I figure it's an ongoing long term process.

I agree wholefoodnut. Its gonna be a long process but hey, it took me 3 yrs to gain all this weight, its not gonna go away overnight or without hard work.. As long as I do my best, thats all that matters

The younger you are when you lose the weight the more resilient the body is in restoring the skin but the as we grow older think of it as if of our skin was like old elastic and loses it shape when stretched to far too long. One of those things that makes me wish i had succeeded in losing weight and keeping it off years ago. My hubby already has told me he would not pay for surgery and he would love me and my flabby skin as is. SO with that I think I can live with it. But exercise and healthy eating help but unlikely to bring me back to the same fit 20somthing at 40somthing (for me). You can still be fit but our skin may always tell our story for us.

I have curtains of flab all over, but at 70, I am not going to fret about that, getting down to a healthy normal weight will have to suffice.

I'm 66, figure I will work at getting me as fit as I can be. Tone the muscles and hope the skin follows, luckily I was only 192 at the beginning of this journey. Some of you have a further journey. I do strength training for both muscle tone and to try to prevent more bone density loss from osteo. The healthier and more fit my body is the more active and pain free I can be as I get older. As many of you know I'm workin on that "Granny six pack" . Hoping my body will allow me to get there. 30 minutes of TRX video tonight and made progress on the side planks and front planks, all is good. Each workout is a step toward getting healthier and more fit. I wish I would have kept up with the exercise I did in my 20's and 30's. That routine was lost somewhere along the way, I cannot allow myself to lose it again.

I am thankful I have been the turtle with my weight loss, I don't have lots of extra skin other than the obligatory baby belly(6 kids). Keeping your skin soft and moisturized can help, I use sweet almond oil after every shower, but I think after a certain point only surgery will do it. Frankly though, who sees under your clothes, I wouldn't stress too much. All the compliments will wash away any insecurity about extra skin.

Red, it DOES happen. I lost 65 lb at 42, and I exercised in aerobic classes with weight lifting segments, 3 times a week, and in between I was swimming, ca 30 minutes non-stop 3 times a week. Within 6-7 months my skin and flesh did tighten up. It is a subtle change, but it happens, gradually but, all of a sudden you notice. You will see. It could be that swimming helped, as it acts like a massage of the whole body beyond the exercise per se. I hope this is going to happen now too, as I am meandering through this process again a few years later....

Skin redresses a bit later and slower than the muscle building, but it does, if you persist. It does shrink back. Especially on a high fat diet like ours. It gives it more elasticity.

Red -- Thanks for posing this question as I've been recently wondering about the very same issue -- like you, in my 40s with more weight to lose . . . I've been doing SOME weight training on my own at home, but probably need to incorporate more based on responses above.

Letty gaylor talked about it and even posted pics. She still looks wonderful despite the excess skin.Your skin will probably tighten gradually with time. Most important is to love yourself skin and all, and be proud of losing all that weight.
