I'm loving my Fitbit Charge HR, been using it since the middle of last week. It's been a good motivational tool and is also giving me some insight into things. One thing I've noticed is the effect of exercise on my heart rate. Below is a screenshot of Friday's heart rate graph. Between 7am and 12pm I was mostly at my desk with some short trips through the office. Heart rate goes into the 50's at times while I'm sitting. At noon I took a 3.5 mile walk doing laps through the parking garage and ended it with running up and down 12 flights of stairs which got me up into the cardio zone. Between 1pm and 6pm I'm mostly sitting again but my heart rate remains elevated compared with the morning. 6pm to 7pm was on the exercise bike - afterwards mostly sitting again but now my heart rate remains elevated higher than before for a few hours until bed. It's said that we continue to burn fat and our metabolism is elevated for a period of time after vigorous exercise, and my heart rate chart seems to show that...very encouraging. Here's the chart:

The other thing I've noticed is the chart doesn't show my peak heart rate in real time as it occurred during exercise. For example running the stairs I was up around 135 bpm according to my fitbit but the chart peaks around 120 bpm. On the bike was really interesting as it has a heart rate monitor built in that measures in real time. It took my fitbit several minutes to "catch up" to what the bike was reading, after pedaling around 10 minutes they were very close to each other in readings. Also my peak heart rate in real time was around 153 bpm but the fitbit chart only recorded around 135 bpm peak. I think all this is because the fitbit results record an average of 5 minutes in time. This smooths out the peaks and valleys, and there's a bit of lag time with the fitbit as it plays "catch up" to real time heart rate because of the averaging. Not really a problem, but just something interesting to make note of.

I'm convinced... I'm getting me one.

Glen I sent you a private message, it has another web address to try for fitmess. You're evidently not getting re-directed to the correct site. Let me know if it's still a problem. John - for me the fitbit is worth the money spent because it's giving me info, feedback, and motivation to keep working hard on improving my health. While it's not a necessity it's a bonus...I can afford to buy one and what price tag can we put on our health? My wife is finding it motivational also.

As you said, it does provide motivation and keeps us honest. Happy that I don't have to document each activity. Makes life so much simpler.

I also got a fitbit but unfortunately no one is around to hook it on me and I have tried to do it myself but can't. I few days I have used it was wonderful. I have not figured out ifican shower and swim with it so I have taken it off. Does anyone know if you can get them set ?

Go on their site and it's filled with instructions. Are you connected to your account with them online? Play with your dashboard. I just discovered I could set mine to show (for me) my heart rate by tapping it twice. You actually get a mini display of lights when you hit 10,000 steps. I've done it and felt it vibrate (thought I was having another stroke)but saw it last night for the first time when I was walking to get it up to 10k.

CR - Settings on the dashboard let you do some neat things. The first time mine went off vibrating for 10,000 steps I thought it had gone haywire. I've also go mine set to vibrate and wake me up in the morning. Which was really helpful today since my wife unplugged the alarm clock after I went to bed so she could plug in her phone. Guess we need more electric outlets.

The flex is ok to shower with and do dishes etc.no idea on the HR. The Heart rate would be a nice feature. Mine was free from my company so can't complain. It is a good motivator as I'm trying to get the 70,000 steps a week. I find myself checking it on weekends often to see where I stand.

I love my FitBit Charge HR! And yeah don't get it wet! And I think it's cool that it has caller id. At first I thought that the id was kinda pointless, but then during Zumba when the music is loud it started vibrated when my daughter called me to let me know that she was going over to her grandma's house. It's actually a great feature.

The Charge HR is not waterproof, only water resistant. Don't shower, bathe or swim with it on and I would be careful washing dishes not to immerse it in water.

I think I'm glad I have the flex, no worries about getting it wet.

Interesting insights. I'm aware that the less fit someone is the longer an elevated heart remains elevated. That's not a bad thing, though it obviously has the heart working harder. I suppose that's the price for getting into shape. My opinion of Fitbit, without knowing a whole lot about it, is that it's an over-priced toy for the techy, fitness buff. I'm not saying you're one of those; that's my opinion, knowing the little I know about it. I use a $25 pedometer on my walks. All I'm interested in is tracking my steps. My daily goal is 6,000 per day. If you've got something to say about Fitbit, positive and/or negative, go right ahead. I'm open to more information, especially from someone using it.

Hi Bruce, I appreciate your comments! I'm sure the fitbit is overpriced as are most gadgets and I hesitated getting one for that reason...I'd saved money from stuff I'd sold on ebay and a couple checks given as birthday gifts so I justified my purchase on that basis and ended up buying one. I've also used a pedometer on walks which is helpful but I want more than that tells me. My main reason for purchase is the heart rate monitor - I want to monitor on a day long basis and also be able to monitor heart rate during work outs. I have heart disease and 5 stents, I want to know and target certain heart rate zones, this allows me to do that and as a bonus I have a record of it. So I'm very satisfied with it. But it's not for everyone and I certainly understand that.

how can you view your daily heartrate? I have the HR and use my desktop....
15 Jun 15 by member: amyskids
Amyskids - if your dashboard looks the same as mine - the middle box on the first row can be selected to feature graphs for either steps, heartrate, calories, distance, floors, or active minutes. You access the dashboard through an internet browser to the fitbit website and log in to your account.

I found it! :-)

Jmb, Five stents, huh! I was a cardiovascular nurse for 25+ years, so I have a pretty good idea knowing what having those stents are about. Congratulations for not settling for the surgery to fix everything—your heart, your lifestyle, and so on. I'd like to know more about Fitbit. Would you tell me what other features it has?

How informative! Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your graph.
