Lost so far: 23.0 lb

Current Weight
129.2 lb
Performance: losing 0.2 lb a week

Goal Weight
135.0 lb
Still to go: 5.8 lb
I'm 5'3", 33 yrs old.
When I got married, in 2004, I was 128lbs and a size 8. Within our first year of marriage, I gained 20lbs. So I got on Weight Watchers and dropped those 20 in 2 months.
I had my first child in 2006, and hovered around 160 for over a year after he was born.
I got down to 144 in 2009 and then got pregnant with my 2nd child. After she was born, I hovered around 163 for over a year.
By Dec. 2011, I got down to 150 and got pregnant. Unfortunately, we experienced a miscarriage mid January, 2012. But, thankfully, 4 weeks later, I got pregnant again. After our last child was born, I got my tubes tied. When he was about around 2 months old, I weighed about 180lbs. My heaviest EVER!
I didn't even try to start losing weight til he was about 4 months old. That's when my big journey began. I lost 36lbs by April 2014 but by Jan 2015, I had gained 10lbs. So I came on here trying to get down to 140...maybe 135, I wasn't sure. Well, after 6 months, I surpassed my goal of 140 and even 135. It became my goal to get between 130-135 and STAY THERE!!!! I went from a size 14 to a size 4 :-) I've lost 50lbs total since Jan. 2013!

*Update 2/19/2016 I finally reached my goal of 130 on Feb. 11. I am on to maintaining and toning certain areas. Still in a size 4 but they are getting a little loose in the waist :-)

We're a Crunchy homeschooling family living for Jesus and striving to be healthy!

More or Less?
When you're so close to your goal....as in the final 5lb stretch and you hit a plateau...do you bump UP your calories or drop them?

For me, in the past, when I was bigger, if I ate too little, I didn't lose. That's when I was in my plateaus. If my deficit was higher than 800, I would tend to not lose for 2-3 weeks but when I kept it closer to 500, then I started losing.

Well, I've kind of been stuck in the 138's for 2 weeks. I did drop down to 137.6 on Friday but today, I'm back up to 138.4 and my deficits have been between 500-700. I worked out 5x this past week. My goal is 135. I'm wondering if I need to make my deficits bigger to drop these last few lbs.....

I don't normally post on this subject, but I feel really strongly about the "myth". It's NOT a myth! It just works differently than most people think. I am a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and a Certified Lifestyle & Weight Management Coach. It's not so much "Starvation" as it is "over-restricted calorie intake". I have worked with several clients who were on highly restricted calorie diets (less than 850 Kcals/day) and they would lose the first few pounds then stop. And, they would gain body fat %. WHY? BMR is NOT static. It will change for each person based on age, fitness level and muscle mass. If you eat less than your body's BMR requirement for an extended period (usually between 30 and 45 days) your body WILL start to slow it processes to conserve it's fat stores. The results are fatigue, moods swings, restless sleep, changes in bowel movements, Etc. Get the point? Once I got these clients back on a balanced diet with adequate calorie intake and exercise plan, their fitness levels increased over time. Body fat levels started to go down. And, they got smaller. Notice I didn't mention weight loss. As muscle density increased, they lost very little weight while getting a much more toned and trim physique. This is my real life experience. Not some junk I read on the internet by someone trying to sell me something.

100% agree. THis also has been my experience throughout the years. I a NOT a trainer but someone who has battled weight loss for a while ven though I am not OBESE. I have lost 36lbs over the past 2 years. In the beginning, I was eating only 1400 calories at the weight of 180 and I'm 5'3" THe weight did come off quickly at first and then it drastically slowed down. Hence why it's taking so long to reach my goal. I worked out 5x a week. Once I hit about 150bs, the weight loss became non existent. So I pretty much gave up for about 4 months, then decided to give it a try again. In April of this year, I got back on the wagon. I worked out 5x a week and started out eating between 1300-1400 calories but NOTHING was happening for the first 5.5 weeks. THen I found out about TDEE and BMR (I only knew about BMI and that mine was too high lol). So I calculated my TDEE and realized I wasn't eating enough and discovered that my metaboism justs slowed down. So.....I UPPED my calorie intake to 1600-1700 a day and BAM, I startd loosing the weight. I lost 8lbs in 8 weeks. NOw, I'm on a bit of a plateau. Sitting at the same weight for 2 weeks. Still working out 5x a week. According to my charge hr fitbit, I burn 2600-2800 on days I work out. My BMR alone is 1400, so for me to only eat 1400, especialy on days I work out would be quite silly and leave me feeling extremely hungry, irritable, and tired. SO I try to aim for at least 1700 on those days. I am 9lbs away from my goal and I know the weight tends to really slow down at this point and thats ok. I have noticed my shape changing, Im noticing some abs Smile, my butt is much smaller, my celulite is less visible, my legs are more lean, and even though I am 9lbs heavier than I was 10 yrs ago, I am finally back in the same size. I have tried not to depend so much on the scale anymore because I am more fit now than I was 10 yrs ago (when I was "skinny" and 135lbs.) I just wish that those 3 csections didn't leave me with extra skin and damaged stomach muscles and "mom pouch" lol

Interesting tid bit from Jillian Michaels
I'm able to get in 1700. It's not EASY but I make it work without eating junk. I double up on my protein per each meal sometimes or I add in protein packed snacks. I LOVE cottage cheese lol. 3/4 cup (169g) is 19g of protein! I eat hard boiled eggs, protein bars, 3oz of deli sliced chicken or turkey, protein shake, string cheese, apple slices with peanutbutter, my homemade yogurt, and sometimes I just take a tsp of coconut oil straight up. It's added calories but does so much good inside the body...and yes, I add it in my calorie intake.

Interesting tid bit from Jillian Michaels
This is for those who, like me, are 10-15lbs away from goal weight.....

"If you’re only trying to lose five, 10, or 15 pounds, you’re in a different place than someone who wants to drop triple digits. You’re not obese, you just want to look better — and this is what I refer to as vanity pounds. The human body doesn’t want to be carrying around excess weight, so it will respond to diet and exercise. When you have a smaller amount of weight to lose, your body is already healthy, which makes it tougher to lose weight. What people in this situation often do is cut more calories or increase their time at the gym, but this method will not work. All that does is slow your metabolism down and send your body into starvation mode. The best quick fix is to give your body a little more food so it feels secure. Varying your calorie intake is my best advice for keeping your body from plateauing. For the next three days, vary your calorie intake between 1,800 and 2,400 calories. I know this may sound crazy, but trust me — I know what I'm doing. After three days, drop back down to your usual calorie allowance. Remember, never allow your daily calorie allowance to fall below 1,200 if you are a woman and 1,500 if you are a man. Falling below these daily allowances can do real damage to your metabolism and result in excessive loss of lean muscle tissue."
