A couple of STATEMENTS about Food, I used to believe were true!!
1. Food is my FRIEND...WRONG...LOL...But for about 30 years, I lived my life as though Food was my very best friend in ALL of my life. When I was alone, I turned to food for companionship- - When I was afraid, I turned to food for courage - -When I was bored, I turned to food for excitement- - When I was sad, I turned to food for comfort- - When I was happy, I turned to food for celebration. ALL of these responses are under the broad category of "EMOTIONAL EATING". I readily admit I have NOT completely re-trained my thinking, BUT I am trending toward the TRUTH. And the TRUTH is...NO food I eat, NOR Any AMOUNT of food I eat, CAN DO ANYTHING to alter my life situation. (Other than bringing a very short term pleasure, that for me, only lasted 30 minutes or less...and then there was the guilt feelings of having binged :(
2. Food is my enemy....WRONG AGAIN...Food is neither good nor bad...it is neutral...It is FUEL (YES,some foods are healthier than others, but even high salt, high fat, high carb food is NOT my enemy...I just can't have it)
But my enemy is NOT FOOD, it is my ATTITUDE about food that becomes my enemy. It is thinking,"I CAN EAT an UNLIMITED AMOUNT of ______ with NO Negative consequences!" that is my true enemy.
Be glad for any feedback y'all are willing to give.
Thanks for listening and thanks for caring.
Warmest FS Regards to ALL of YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderfully put. Excellent attitude. It may have taken you a while to figure it out, but you are much wiser and stronger now and able to face the truth about food. Great job.

Very insightful. We need to eat to live and not live to eat, this is my new motto! I love food; I like to consider myself a professional home chef, and cooking is one of my favorite things in the world! Cooking helps me relieve stress, relax, get creative ect. BUT I finally realized that enjoying the creative aspect of cooking and food in general does not mean I have to cook unhealthy food, and it doesn't mean I have to eat it all. It is about balance my friend, which is a lesson I am slowly learning. You are on the right track, and with your wonderful attitude and wisdom you will get there in no time!

From someone who used to (and sometimes still does) use food as an emotional pacifier, it is hard to keep things in balance. Will keep your words in mind at my next meal.

Yes - very good! Food is fuel and food can be medicine for us.

Love this!! It is hard to come to terms with our relationship with foods. Sometimes we don't want to admit how dependent we are on food!

So true, but very tough to get to the this point..."It's just fuel for the body." If you are able to get to the point where you see food the same way you see water, you are way ahead of many.

Awesome post. I am such an emotional eater myself and go through the whole self hatred eat more cycle. I keep trying to remember how great I felt two years ago when I was thinner. So looking forward to getting back there.

very very true, it's all how we view food in our lives that makes the difference. Great insights!

Nice when you are able to come to your own truth about food. Sometimes you know the truth, but dont believe the truth.

I am learning to listen to my body because in the past, like you, I listened to my emotions/moods. Bored - grab some cookies. Sad - grab some chips. Happy - food fest . . . Frequently I was not even hungry. Sometimes I was sleepy, or thirsty but instead of going to bed at night I would eat ice cream or cake or whatever other junk was laying around. I would plow through a bag of chips instead of getting a glass of water. My favorite definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing the exact same way and expecting different results. No more, I am getting off the insanity merry-go-round. Wishing you luck SuccessThisTime58. See you on the other side of Looserville.

Wow- this is (used to be) me. Food was also an addiction for me.Problem is- you can't quit food :) You struck such a chord with this post because for years I tormented myself. This surgery has been Godsend for me. I just keep praying I will continue with my weight loss journey. I can't tell you how much you have helped me with all of your posts and inspirational journal entries. Keep on keeping on- it's what's keeping me going :)) BTW- big congrats on the weight loss this week!!! Nice job!
