Feel like whining today. I HATE winter, mostly I hate the constantly changing weather from balmy and sunny 50 down to the low teens and windy the next day. Winter is rough in the DELMARVA area. That said. I have a cold. I feel achy and I can't even remember why I put myself on this weight loss journey. Not that I'm going off my diet or anything, I don't have any appetite with this cold, nothing tastes right and I can't smell my food.

I'm just generally pissed with the world and the fact that I had a total of 50 lbs to lose in the first place. How did it happen? How did I let my weight get so out of control? I did not even think that I looked like I had 50 extra pounds. I still had an hour glass shape, it's just that everything ballooned out proportionately. In fact my coworkers were concerned that I might be setting too low a weight goal when I said I had to loose 50 lbs. They asked me why so drastic, I said because I know that 130lbs is better than 180lbs for some one who is 5'2", and that is even placing me on the high end of the BMI range for my stature. That shut them up pretty quickly. I don't think that they had any idea I was that heavy. I guess I know how to dress for my shape. I did not have the tell-tale beer gut that men get, my husband does not even have to loose as much as me (45 lbs), even though his shape is more affected by his extra weight, bulging over his pant waist, what the hell?

I'm stressed about work, extra duties and impossible goals. I'm worried about personal finances. I'm worried about my long term health. I'm just feeling overwhelmed and depressed. I told you I hate winter. Lack of sun and lack of outdoor activities. I need to retire somewhere warmer, that is for sure. I hate SAD, some people snicker like its' some sort of made up illness, but I can tell you it is real.

Sigh, end of rant.

Sorry that you're struggling. Try to focus on positive things, even force yourself to pick out some positive things each day to think about. SAD is real, I am close to someone who struggles with that and depression a great deal. Good news is the days are getting longer and Spring will start to poke it's head out in a few weeks. :)

I have some of the same feelings.. I'm only 4'11" and my starting weight was 170. So I gave myself 50 pounds that I wanted to lose. I've been doing this for a little over a year now, and I'm only around 145 or so. Its frustrating because losing 50 pounds shouldn't be as hard as it is. Keep your chin up, we'll get there!

I'm 5'3" and like you I let my weight balloon to 180. It took me 10 months to loose 55 lbs. Don't loose faith and keep up the good work.

Many graphs for weight ranges based on height don't take into account a person's frame size. A small frame size would have different weight requirements than a medium or large. There are several online sites with info such as Changingshape (.com). I have a friend who is a few inches taller than I am, weighed 224, who totally rocked a bikini. She had no problem going to any pool or pool party, secure in the knowledge she looked good. A weight that is healthiest for your body isn't a one size fits all. Good luck on meeting your goals!!

I'm sorry you're feeling frustrated and blue. I can offer no real advice, but just know that, as a fellow SAD sufferer myself, you have someone in your corner rooting for you! Also, I started Vitamin D supplements this year for the first time and it's made a HUGE difference for me!

I live in Western NY, so I hear ya about winter! A couple of years ago it was so cold and grey from November on. I got sublingual Vitaman D drops from Amazon and, honest to Pete, it made a huge difference. Maybe it would do the same for you. Hope you're feeling better soon!

A lot of us struggle in the winter to lose weight because of the weather. Its a very depressing time of year and its very easy to eat to find joy. Hang tight and remember Spring will soon be here. My co-workers had no clue I am as heavy as I am because of the way I dress and the fact that most everybody in this office is heavy. Be thankful at least your co-workers are supporting you, mine want to know why Im not eating the junk food laying around the office.

I have just started this journey. My goal is also 50 lbs Mine came on over a period of 5-6 years and I am very disgusted with myself. I have only just done my first weigh in. Seeing your progress is giving me encouragement. I also know how the weather can affect us in the winter. I live in Oregon and it is cloudy and rainy all winter long. Very hard to never get to see the sun or blue sky. Keep pressing on, moving forward, you are doing this!

Wow it is funny that you mentioned how you never thought you looked heavier because I am in the same boat...the past few months I felt ok, I didn't think I looked heavier. Then again I never really look in the mirror (I don't like to look at myself unless I do makeup) and I decided to get on track with my health. I took photos of myself for my day 1 and I couldn't believe how much weight I gained. So strange.. now I feel like I'm living in a different body, I don't feel comfortable, I feel my thighs touch a lot. I don't even wear shorts anymore to bed. Urgh..not to mention how winter makes me not want to workout at all. I can deff relate to you.. Also I used to hate winter as much as you do until my boyfriend pushed me to snowboard. Now I look forward to winter more than I did. Snowboarding got me really active in the winter, it burns tons of calories and its fun/challenging. Try to find a good hobby that keeps you active in the winter.. it helped mine become bearable.

Just a note on BMI. It was originally intended as a statistical measure for a population. That way it "self averaged" (my term) for small frame and large frame people. I had read that one of the reasons it became so prevalent is that insurance companies picked up on it and have used it for setting rates. I did a quick check on Wikipedia (yes there can be issues) - below is a snippet: "The modern term "body mass index" (BMI) for the ratio of weight to squared height owes its popularity to a paper published in the July 1972 edition of the Journal of Chronic Diseases by Ancel Keys. This found the BMI to be the best proxy for body fat percentage among ratios of weight and height.[3][4] The interest in an index that measures body fat came with increasing obesity in prosperous Western societies. BMI was explicitly cited by Keys as appropriate for population studies and inappropriate for individual evaluation. Nevertheless, due to its simplicity, it has come to be widely used for preliminary diagnosis.[5] Additional metrics, such as waist circumference, can be more useful.[6][7]" I intend to use the upper end of the "normal" BMI for my next goal weight. But take the BMI with some discretion, it was not meant to be an individual statistic

Wow... I have felt like that too about the extra weight and it not looking "that bad" as I'm able to carry extra weight "easily"... I also know it feels good to vent as it seems that once you get the "poisonous thoughts out you are able to move on... I hope you feel better soon )

Ok, I can relate to what you are saying about gaining weight. I need to lose weight and was doing a low carb diet and I got burned out and started gaining instead of losing and now I am trying to find something that will help me lose this weight. I would love to lose 40-50 pounds. Really I just want to wear my clothes comfortably where the waist bands of my slacks do not roll over. Does anyone know what I mean?

Wow, thanks for the support everyone. I'm feeling better today. I just had to get the negative thoughts out so that I could let them go. Thank you for the suggestions about the supplements. I'm already taking vitamin D, Omega 3 with CoQ10, and Potassium. I was just reading that magnesium levels can affect muscle aches, so I'm going to add that to my daily regimen. Your comments have been great. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one struggling out there.
