Coconut Oil Recipes: Homemade Remedies for Health & Beauty plus Recipes for Paleo, Celiac and Gluten-Free Diets (Quick and Easy Series)

What's so special about Coconut Oil?

Magic oil and miracle oil are other names for coconut oil because it possesses unique qualities in terms of providing a number of health benefits, including skin and hair health, as well as wide culinary uses. It has been consumed by people living in tropical climates for thousands of years but has received negative publicity in North America because of its high levels of saturated fats. Only recently have people rediscovered the true benefits of this wonderful oil and started substituting it for other oils in their diet. Our Coconut Oil recipe book from Dogwood Apps exposes the myths about Coconut Oil and allows you to make your own informed decision about its usefulness in your own life.

What are some of the health benefits of using Coconut Oil?
boosts thyroid functioning to increase metabolism, energy, and endurance levels.
contains Lauric acid which increases good (HDL) cholesterol levels in the blood.
enables the body to absorb fat-soluble vitamins and increases digestion.
it acts as an antioxidant.
it can be used to for hair care, skin care, and even sunscreen.
it has been shown to help people lose or maintain weight when incorporated into a well balanced diet.
helps regulate blood sugar levels for diabetics.

Hey there: I noticed you mentioned Body Fortress protein powder. You may want to try this one next time - it is a better level of nutrition and BCAAs. You can google to get the best price but here is the link to read about Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/opt.htm

Unfortunately, FatSecret cuts off links in comments. I did look at Optimum Nutrition after I ordered the Body Fortress. Thanks for the tip. I already have ON Creatine.

I used to use Body Fortress, too. Optimum Nutrition has better quality proteins I think...I also use VitaSport protein powder which has more protein grams per serving...but you only can get it from a NutriShop and it is a bit pricey. Protein shakes are a great source for me. You are doing well, so rock on!

I've read Amazon reviews faulting Body Fortress for cholesterol and fillers.

I use to try to include coconut oil in my diet, but eventually tired of the flavor. I subsequently switched to MCT oil which has most of the same nutritional benefits as coconut oil but is entirely flavorless and never turns solid.

Sorry, coconut oil tastes really nasty to me, i'll stick with other options.

It serves as the base ingredient for most of my homemade health and beauty products including my homemade "miracle deodorant in a jar" which I will never live without! It lasts through two intense workouts, like a 7-mile run and P90X for a whole 24 hours without the toxic carcinogens found in most other pit sticks!

LOVE this post! Breast Cancer survivor for 14 years, I will not use any processed type of deodorant. I use.... Coconut Oil. YEP. It's an antibacterial and softens your skin and keeps at bay the bacteria that give your pits the smell. Let's get back to nature and trust what nature has given us. We DON'T need big pharma telling us what is right. GO Back to basics. Like our great grandparents did. SIMPLE!

Sweet12, would you share your deodorant recipe? I also make salt scrub with coconut oil also use it on my hair and skin. I just don't cook with it. I cannot use the anti-prespirants due to the aluminum, I'm allergic to it, it's toxic anyway. I have been using all natural deodorants. Would love to try yours. Thanks.

Sadiebear, I'm one who is heading back to basics on so many things. Getting rid of the chemicals in my home is making me healthier. One simple change is using vinegar in Downey ball in the washing machine instead of softeners. It works better because there is no chemicals building up on towels etc. As I use cleaners up they are in most cases being replaced by healthier alternatives. Those scented air fresheners are in a box to go to the salvation army.

Sure! It's 5 TBSP of unrefined organic coconut oil, 3 TBSP Arrowroot Powder, 3 TBSP Baking Soda, and whatever organic essential oils you prefer. I use tea tree oil & sweet orange oil, but feel free to use different ones if you want. Just gently melt the oil, mix in the dry ingredients, add the optional essential oils, pour into a container (I use a small glass jar) and place it in the fridge for 30 minutes to solidify. Then, it's ready to use! It's unbelievable stuff. A pea-sized amount is all you need. The Sig-O and I both use it and I recently gave the recipe to my physician for her and her husband to use as well! They both LOVE it too!

I only use unscented Dr. Bronners on my clothes now and those "dryer balls" that bounce against the clothes to soften them. I "inherited" some clothes from my SIL, and they were so overpoweringly perfumed with detergent/fabric softener, I couldn't wear them without getting a headache! I had to wash them THREE times before the toxic smell went away!

Thank you so mush for the recipe!! I'll get some arrowroot powder on Tuesday, no where open today as it's not in the regular grocers. I also use dryer balls to reduce the static. My detergent is usually homemade. Not having chemicals and scents in my sheets etc. Has decreased my morning asthma problems to rarely from daily. Love Dr Bonners, I've used the peppermint soap on my face since the early 70's. My DD and SIL buy the biggest bottles constantly and SIL won't use anything else for shower soap. I mix it with my salt scrub sometimes.

I make a sea salt, organic olive oil and Dr. Bronner's shower scrub, and it's the only thing that touches my skin in the shower. No need for toxic body lotions either. I'm currently using J.R. Liggett's Shampoo bar on my hair after trying all of those online "no-poo" recipes and not finding one that worked for me. I threw out all of my toxic cosmetics (most women are slathering their faces in LEAD everyday!) and don't own anything rated higher than a "2" on the EWG (Environmental Working Group) Skin Deep website. I love that website!

Will have to check out that website. My scrubs are sea salt, coconut oil, and olive oil. I may add some lavender to the next batch as my lavender plants have grown like crazy this year. I'm also searching for a shampoo, will see if the natural food store has that one. They have tripled the size of it recently, they have more real food now instead of mostly vitamins. I use coconut oil for body moisturizer and an all natural Brazil nut cream on my face (have dry skin).

Jeri, what is the name of the natural food store? I am interested in natural and whole foods and home products.

I'm in independence Missouri, the one here is Nature's Pantry. It's privately owned, not sure if it a franchise. I can find out, my neighbor used to work there. It has expanded recently, I need to go investigate. I ran in quick for something a couple weeks ago and was surprised at the difference, as they used to have more vitamins than food, though they have always had some bulk grains and a couple small isles of food. It seems they now may have a decent selection. There is another different one about a mile from me but again that one is mostly vitamins.

There are 2 Whole Foods, another big new natural food store, and trader Joe's but they are all on the SW Kansas side of the metro about40miles from me, guess they don't think people anywhere else eat real food!! Ikea is opening there as well.
