HCB's Journal, 20 September 2012

WooHoo - second day in a row I chose to walk during my work break. This really is not a big deal - but I have been lagging lately and trying to re-establish my daily exercise routine!

I walked one of my old hill routes - and it was easy! SO, nothing like it was for me about 40 pounds ago!

I have been thinking a lot about Buddy Support on FatSecret. I believe it is best when people are truthful in responses to what they read from their peers and try to be constructive while being supportive.

My Buddies have been great at saying the truth when I have been lagging along with exercise or making excuses for myself!

I too often read people's journals where they have excuses, regularly cheat on their food plans, or forgo exercise for other things - and THEN, their Buddies say, "It's OK, no worries, you will do it next time, I support you, you are the best, etc."

Is this really HELPFUL to that person? Or, is it just enabling them to continue in their pattern of excuses and unhealthy choices?

I am not for critical or unsolicited advice as you know from previous posts I have made (August 11th entry)- but I know I am most happy when my Buddies show they care enough about me to say, "Quit BULLSH*TTING and get moving!"

They care enough to be truthful to help me succeed!

Grateful for:

- The good health of my loved ones
- My FS Buddies who support and encourage me to continue
- "Butt-kicking" myself to a smaller size today
- My DH - who is my greatest "cheerleader"
- My Bengal cat companions named Bodhi and Ravi
- My work - which has meaning and worth to other human beings
- My connection to the Mother Earth and its entire splendor
- My physical health

A friendly nudge in the right direction is always helpful - we all need them from time to time! And, I agree, it is of no use to be making excuses for ourselves and having our buddies let it slide. We can do that all on our own :) So I'm giving you (and the rest of my buddies who see this) permission to kick my butt when I need it, too. And BRAVO for taking that walk again. It's obviously helping to improve your mindset so I'm sure that some more intense exercise will be on the agenda in the very near future. Just do it!

Thanks - Evelyn64! You are one I count on for constructive support and feedback because you live it, too!

I've often thought of that in my responses. There is an art to saying the right thing and I think we all like to er on the softer side. But many times I've felt like saying - "What is wrong with your head! Are you actually trying to get fatter?". BTW - HCB, you have my permission to say those things to me!

Glad you are taking those walks! Are you allergies getting better?

@skwhite: I changed the time of day I take my allergy pill so it has been easier to wake up in the morning - which leaves me more time to lounge or exercise before I go to work from about 11am - 7pm. I was taking it at bedtime and it was making me sleep like the dead and wake up drowsy. I started to take it mid-day and by the time I feel tired, it is actually bedtime! Duh, who knew?

Your exercises ARE important. The last time I went to a mall with my daughter, I faced the reality I'd never be able to shop with her again. A year ago I was out of breath and had tightness in my chest. 40 pounds makes a huge difference, and it was hard work. You have your whole life ahead of you, so keep on moving! Today I shopped all afternoon with my daughter, and it felt as if I had sprouted wings and could fly. Keep on flying, HCB!

You're right. Coddling one another helps none of us. If you see a destructive pattern in my behavior that I'm 'letting' happen, let me know!

Sometimes we just have to be brutally honest and tell the other person that there are times when the truth hurts. We can acknowlege others excuses because we have made them ourselves. I would rather be told straight up that the excuses me crap, and to get off my self pity train and start moving on my own two feet. It is great that you are walking at lunch.. I walk every day back and forth to work.. :D have a happy friday..

Unfortunately there is a fine line....if someone is continually beating themselves up it is sometimes enough to drive them to the cookie jar - so I generally say, don't worry about it, just get back on track. As it is pointless worrying about what you have already eaten or excercise you have not done - it's over, pick up and get back on track (or in other words "Quit BULLSH*TTING and get moving!") :) )

Yea!!! glad to hear that a change of pace is helping you get off your butt and moving again. In no time at all you'll be back to the JM videos. I agree with you that we are a support system for one another and that we need to be truthful and kick each others butts!

I agree with triaby, giving advice is a fine line to walk, you don't want to encourage someone to do the wrong thing but you don't want to knock down somemone who might be fragile.

I always say..yesterday is gone and you can't change what is done..you have to pick up and start again..I agree with triaby as well..:O)

I agree with BHA, Traiby, and FOL, too - I am not advocating advice giving in a critical way at all; just saying I respect my Buddies who are willing to "tell it like it is" if I am stuck in a place that is hindering my progress toward my goals. I just prefer not to blow smoke and watch someone continue to self-destruct particularly if I truly care about them and their success!
