mrsmole's Journal, 20 February 2014

It's funny. I have amazing discipline in every aspect of my life and diet with the exception of one: The Scale. I just cannot resist the urge the weight myself and see those results each and every morning. And while I'm not expecting "instant" gratification as NM has written about in his Journals, I am expecting SOME gratification, otherwise, what is the point?

I've been flirting around the same weight for the last 5 or 6 days. I know that irregularity plays a part in it, and I know that slow, gradual weight loss means exactly that. Slow. Gradual.

But still.

My biggest problem still lies between my ears. I'm a computer repair professional by trade. When a hard drive is being scanned, I'll run a diagnostic tool. I tell the program to run, hit the button and walk away. After 10 minutes, it might say 17% complete, a few minutes later 22% complete, and in an hour, it's 100% complete. What I guess I'm saying is that I'm logical, and I'm accustomed to steady progress. In the same direction: Forward.

Now what I'm NOT used to is for the program to say 22% complete after 10 minutes and then a few minutes later tell me it's only 17% complete. If it did that, I'd tell my client, "Your hard drive is shooting errors and it's trashed. Sorry." And I would go to the garage and take a hammer to it and smash it to bits so no one could ever get data from it.

So you can see how difficult it is for me to accept that I weigh 2 pounds less on Monday, 1 pound more on Wednesday, 3 pounds more on Thursday, and by Friday, I'm back to the same as I was on Monday again. WTH? It makes me want to get my hammer!

Why can't bodies be like hard drives? I don't care if the progress is slow, but please let it only be in one direction: DOWN!

I so envy those of you who weigh in 2-3 times a week. I wish I could do that. But alas, I'm doomed to torment myself with these daily ups and downs. I know the downs will eventually come, but what a tortured path it can sometimes be.

If anyone here has a trick for weighing in less often, I'd love to hear it.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could just defrag our bodies?

Great comments, everyone. Mya, I wouldn't mind that the numbers went up IF my choices were bad, but since I haven't cheated in 148 days, I don't MAKE bad choices, so I feel punished for no reason., so do you see the frustration? I admire those of you who weigh 2-3 times weekly or weekly. I'm not a cheater, so there is zero chance I'll cheat. I just have to know on the days it goes up that eventually, it WILL go down and I must learn patience. That's all. Thanks again to all who chimed in.

P.S. NM, you are off topic here, sorry. :(

MrsMole - if weighing once too often is your only "fault" then forgive yourself that...... better to be weak in the weighing department than to be weak in your food choices or exercise programme. Sounds as if you have a winning thing going on. Logically, you KNOW that your body isn't comparable to a client's hard drive - just marvel at the simplicity of the hard drive and the individuality of your body. I also love a little morning weigh-in and when I show discipline and don't weigh-in, I feel a little cheated that day! However, I know the results are unreliable daily so I have a log and actually only pay proper attention about once a month as my cycle affects my weight a lot so find mid cycle every month is my most reliable weight (ie lower!) so I prefer those weigh-ins :) Wishing you lots of success achieving your goal x

Mrsmole; if it is so hard for you to not weigh yourself everyday, perhaps you could try to still do it, but not take the results as 'official'. Just look at the number of the day, mentally remamber if it is a bigger or smaller number than the day before, and that's it. Don't write it down, don't think more about it, let it go for the day. But then, establish 1 day per week that will be the official day; and that is the one that you record. I think if you do this, you can still see what's going on on a daily basis, but not get too frustrated because of those weird numbers. Don't know, this is what I have tried this week and so far it is working for me. I bought a scale 10 days agi and then I started weighin myself every day, which definitely was not good for me. So I decided to do the 'official day' treat and well, it helps.

My weight is up and down like that...I just only record it when it goes down. I weigh every morning; cant help it. When it is up a little, I just just shrug at it, stick with my plan and enjoy my day as best I can. And do it again the next day.

I am a habitual "weigher" also, even several times a day. I now know that when the scales goes up a few pounds it is water weight and it will go back down. As long as I am honest to myself about eating right and exercise I can excuse myself from the weighing issue like KellyM25 said! :)

Mrsmole, I dont see a thing wrong with a daily weigh-in. Thats how I keep myself on track. With wt. gain I'm able to go back and check food journal, then adjust. Keep up the good effort!

I agree with Hoffner. A daily weigh-in shows me the results of what I did in the past 24-48 hours. If I'm doing something wrong it shows up before it has gone on too long. I'd be devastated to hope on the scales a week from now and find I've gone up 5 or 10 pounds. A daily weigh-in keeps me honest.

It's so funny reading the confessions of some of you, like the ones who move the scale around, or weigh several times to see if it will change. I will forgive myself this one weakness and MOVE ON! How about that? LOL. Thanks to all for the group therapy. I feel better now. And with a one pound weight gain overnight for no good reason except that i ate a pound of watermelon, I need the new attitude, haha!

On my "official" weigh in days (Sundays), I make my hubby check the scales with a kettlebell, to make sure the weight on the scale is calibrated exactly right before I get on it. :D

I've been know to pull the battery out of the scale to reset it's 'brain'. Maybe it's mine needs to be reset. Sometimes, I really feel it is. OCD tendencies. Can be a good thing at times.

If the sun comes up, I'm on the scales! It keeps me on track with my food choices. Everyday wt. check has worked for me...find out what works best for you and to heck with what others say you should do.

I have even removed ear rings in my quest to make the scales lower. I have also positioned them in three different places on the floor and tried leaning forwards on my toes (without falling off)....now that is verging on ridiculous! :)

Notjune, I like your calibration method, NM, I like the scale reboot, and Hoffner, I like the what works for you and stay with that attitude. As for Lisa, I've been tempted to drape my hair over the towel rack at times. Ultimately, I know that just being good will make the scale go down faster than any scale tricks will, lol.
