LSG417's Journal, 08 May 2018

So I managed to get in another short but intense workout this morning before my hair appt and running errands. I made a quick protein shake with almond milk, natural peanut butter, protein powder and ice. I took my iced coffee with me. It's after 1p and I'm not really hungry. Managed to grocery shop without overloading on crap. It's not cheap to buy fresh veggies and meat, which is pretty much what I got, except for a couple of bags of chips for the boys. I won't sacrifice my health for the sake of a buck, but dang it's expensive to eat right! I ran into a few folks I know while shopping and was complimented on my weight loss. That's always nice. I feel like I have more energy from working out first thing. Maybe because I had an empty stomach and actually burned some fat, lol. Just hoping I can keep this momentum of working out because I know that muscle will burn fat faster. I probably would've lost more by now had I been consistent. Sometimes life interferes tho. Hope everyone is having a terrific Tuesday! The birds are singing here and a neighbor's rooster is mixed up on his times, lol. Maybe he slept late 😂.

I find that frozen food is cheaper than fresh and these days the frozen is as good or better than fresh. Also, if you are putting the shake in the blender, you can replace the almond milk with water and 5 or 6 nuts or 1/2 TEASPOON of almond butter - you get more bang for your buck there. Almond milk is 10 cents per nut and almonds or almond butter is 1 cent per nut. Good luck with the working out!

Glad you are having a great day - We are headed to the store after the gym tonight. We buy a lot of fresh veggies and meats. we have found some good fresh frozen veg and we buy meat in bulk and then portion and freeze to have on hand when we are in a time pinch but you are correct; it is really expensive to eat right.

I completely agree that buying fresh food is expensive. I have easily spent $50 a week and fresh fruit alone. Fresh vegetables seem to be cheaper, and I do not enjoy frozen at all. Fresh cuts of meat, also expensive. I’m always hunting up the best chicken breast deals. It’s my obsession. We’re going to start going meatless one night at least a week here, to cut down on calories and to also cut down on the food budget.

I always work out on an empty stomach.

I do use frozen, depending on what I'm eating. But I prefer fresh, especially stuff like spaghetti squash (I don't think you can even get that frozen) and of course cucumbers, tomatoes and such. I bought fresh brussel sprouts today so I can roast them. Frozen just doesn't work well when roasting. I will use frozen broccoli, cauliflower and carrots when in a pinch or if making a casserole of some sort, but again, I much prefer them from fresh. My parents plant a garden every year. I need to study up on gardening myself (I do not have a green thumb) so we could have some fresh veggies of our own (my parents do share some).

Oh, and I love when I can snag meats that are marked down due to being close to their sell by date. If I can't use them that day, I just pop it in the freezer! I saved about $10 today by doing that, and actually bought some Ribeyes, that I would've never even bothered with otherwise. Having them tonight because I prefer steaks from fresh when possible.

@HCB, I never used to, thought I needed to eat for the energy. But I'm finding that's not the case!

Great idea to use almonds and water instead of almond milk in blender. I did not think of that. I also use frozen berries and veggies instead of ice in my shakes (buying them in Costco, so it is not too expensive). You also don’t need a lot for a shake but it adds some extra nutrition. Many frozen fruit and vegetables have higher levels of vitamins than “not so fresh” fresh ones.

If I'm making a fruit smoothie, I definitely use frozen fruit instead of ice.
