Goal Weight

42yr South African female, wife to a supportive DH and mom to 3 boys aged 20, 9 and 6 years. My quest to be healthy has been a recent one~over the past three years I have lost over 80lbs, gained some back and I'm back on the wagon after a brief re-lapse. My turning point came when I was diagnosed diabetic, became insulin dependant during my last preganancy and developed pre-eclampsia which resulted in my son being born at 26 weeks, weighing in at 800g (1.7lbs)...it was bascially a do or die situation and I'm happy my mindset settled to enable me to begin a healthy lifestyle regime that's produced and is still producing quality of life for me and my family....it's the sustaining that's the challenge and I'm hopeful that each passing day means a step closer to my goal and longevity.

Caloric Deficit Eating
According to my BMR I should be consuming around 1600 calories which most days I am no where near. It has been suggested that maybe the scale doesn't move often is because that BMR level is not being fed? By being in deficit, you're actually doing your metabolism harm and metabolic repair then needs to be done. As caged liberty says, informed input on this would be good.

Caloric Deficit Eating
Are any of you eating in caloric deficit, meaning 500 or more calories below your BMR levels?

Although this accelerates your weight loss, aren't you afraid of gaining back the weight doubly quick when you start increasing your calorie intake or will you comfortably continue to eat in caloric deficit?

A good site for checking out your calorie requirements based on your energy / exercise expending levels is www.nutritiondata.com A wealth of valuable information.

getting started
I successfully lost 40kgs from 2006-2007 and started steadily gaining again.Evil or Very Mad Dropped clothing size from a 46 to a 36 and I'll be damned if I'm going to go back there again.

Basically followed the low GI and low fat combo, which I pretty much devised on my own and for motivation joined Weigh Less (similar to WW).

Just started detoxing for a week yesterday and I intend to keep at it, as I certainly know the benefits of weightloss. I was previously diabetic and delivered two micro-premi babies during this time and that spurred me on to give my boys a chance of having their mom around for a longer time....

It's difficult, but achievable....
