theWolf56's Journal, 14 May 2018

First, I wanted to say thank you for all of the support I received on my last journal entry.

So, I am still pretty excited about this diet (now when I type diet, I don't mean it as a weight loss solution as at this point, I feel like this is something I can/want to maintain after meeting any diet related goals. While the weight loss may not be as drastic as others in the beginning of the diet, there is a big difference in how I feel. I know some may say that this is all water loss (I've only been on keto for 9 days), but I lost 10 pounds this year before I started using FS again in April and I had lost 17.4 pounds total before I started keto.

Like I stated, there is a big difference of how I feel compared to other diets I have been on in the past. On one commercial diet where most of your food was purchased, I was eating 800-1000 calories a day and starved (really looked forward to cheat days about once a month). The sad thing is, even though I was younger at the time, my weight loss after the first couple of weeks was no better than what I have achieved the past week, even without the cheat meals. Now, I am definitely not starving. For example, Saturday night, we went to my mother-in-law's house to visit with some relatives and ate a late dinner when I got home. I made myself some tuna with Mayo and salt and pepper, but only ate half of the amount I would normally eat as I was full. Last night, we brought over Texas Roadhouse to my mother-in-law's house for Mother's Day (the FS app help me pick out my sides and eliminated a couple of go-to's for the entree). Before, I would eat a few of their dinner rolls with their sweetened butter before the meal came. Then I would eat a 16 oz prime rib with a side of spare ribs, loaded mashed potatoes, and a salad without issue (well, with no issue other than gluttony). Last night, I ordered a 16 oz prime rib, but after eating my salad and green beans (only), I finished a little less than half of the prime rib. Neither my wife or I ate any of the rolls they had sent with us. The worst part was, I still felt like I ate too much, even though I still fell about 800 calories short of my caloric goal for the day (including the omelettes I made for my wife and I in the morning). That was the only meal we have eaten away from home since we started keto, and the app helped us immensely. I enjoy the food I am eating and do not long for the next time to eat.

Changing to keto for us is definitely not all sunshine and lollipops though. My wife and I are in the midst of keto flu. We have limited our net carbs to around 20 to help get us through it as quickly as possible (easier for me than her based on food preferences). I have drank a ton more water (around a gallon each day most days), but I am still waking up dehydrated some days. Feeling lethargic past couple of days, but on the bright side, I am sleeping better right now, but my wife is feeling lethargic and a little jittery at times, so not a good combination for her. I still cannot drink coffee due to one of the less common side effects of starting keto, but my wife has enjoyed the keto-coffee on a few occasions (she learned not to drink that in the afternoon).

To end on a positive note, my shirts are feeling a little looser and pretty close to dropping a pants size on my jeans.

Thanks again for all of the support.

Try adding high fiber fruits and vegetables as part of the carbs - net carbs are what you can look at.

I very much relate to your wife's situation. For the first month in Keto WOE I suffered fatigue, weakness, nausea and a feeling like this was just not going to work for me. I love keto but was afraid I'd have to quit. After researching (long story) I figured out I was deficient in potassium and salt. I increased avacodo and spinach, for potassium, and started drinking Knorr bullion twice a day. I got a probiotics drink at the health food store that I drank twice a day. I also upped my Magnesium. It started helping almost immediately. Within a few days I was feeling much better. I now eat avocado and dark leafy greens every day, no longer do the bullion or the probiotics, regulate elimination with Magnesium and no longer drink the probiotics. Am feeling great! I've accepted the slow rate at which I lose but plan to be on this WOE for the rest of my life. I hope some of this helps. Good luck. ❤

Salt is super important. I’d sprinkle about 1/4 tsp in my hand, lick it and guzzle down a big glass of water with it. That really helped dizziness and just not feeling quite right. Keep up the great work!!

I'm not doing Keto, tho I do try to keep my carbs to a minimum. One thing I had read regarding the keto "flu" is it happens because most folks go from how ever many carbs to 20-30 g net p/day, which is pretty drastic. It's your body's reaction to the sudden drop. One doctor suggested slowly decreasing your carbs down to the desired amount over a period of time to avoid the keto flu. I'm not saying your wife should do this at this point, that's up to her. But it may be worth considering to get her past the lethargy. I'm sure it may slow weight loss progress, but once you get down to the 20g, it should pick up the pace. Good luck to you both on this new journey you've begun!

Everyone responds differently, sometimes I get leg cramps, but if I take a multivitamin at the onset they're usually gone in less than a minute. Up your salt, magnesium, potassium, and drink more water. You and your wife will both adapt, and it's well worth a little keto-flu in the beginning for the long-term results.

If you are right in the worst part of keto flu, epsom salt bath in hot water helped me.

Try putting some pink Himalayan salt into empty pill capsules and taking a few a day or just adding more salt. Also magnesium. This will help!!

Thanks for all of the tips and support from everyone. Interestingly enough, I actually bought some pink salt last night after looking at some new recipes. My wife is already sick of eggs (I don't think I will ever tire of them) so we're going to try a few different keto- friendly recipes for breakfast for her. I hope the lethargy passes soon, but now I'm not sure if it is truly lethargy or if it is because I am waking up earlier with more energy. Still would like to find a local place that has MCT oil (I guess I could order it online) as the local Sprouts and Fry's Marketplace (which has a pretty good-sized healthy section) didn't seem to carry it. It's for a recipe, so we may need to find a suitable substitution.
