mskestrela's Journal, 05 September 2016

Well, the foodie in me has awakened after a long slumber. My neighbor brought me a huge shopping bag of pears from her father's tree. I told her I wouldn't eat them, but offered to dehydrate them for her. Dried pears make a wonderful snack!
I used my spiralizer with the flat blade to slice them wafer thin, and now have 9 trays dehydrating. This batch should be done in 10-12 hours. There are still a bunch left, so I decided to surprise her and her hubby with one of my favorite desserts, poached pears. I happened to have a bottle of red wine a client gave me, not knowing that I'm not much of a wine drinker. It's "Menage a Trois Silk, a soft red blend". I tasted a sip to make sure it would work for poaching, and I gotta tell you, that wine could convert me! I used the whole bottle, though, to get rid of it. LOL Lead us not into temptation! The pears are out and a lovely ruby red, while the rest of the poaching liquid reduces to syrup. I did take a couple of tiny tastes to check for flavor, but I don't think it was enough to spike my insulin too badly. I'll be glad to get it out of the house, though! Smells heavenly! I reminded myself today what a good cook I am, and got re-enthused to really make an effort at cooking for myself again.
I hope everyone had a nice Labor Day weekend.

Wow, poached pears and red wine. That sounds like a rockin dining experience! Maybe wine tonight. It is right in our frig.

I used to make poached pears as my go to, low carb desert. That was before my definition of low carb got tightened considerably. Someday, I can go there again, but this is my year to get to goal!

Thanks, y'all. I resisted the temptation to sample my creation, apart from the poaching wine/syrup. I know they rocked, because all the elements were right. I do hope my redneck neighbors appreciated them! LOL. Don't get me wrong, I love them dearly, and they are good, salt-of-the-Earth people. They are just...unsophisticated, shall we say, about fine dining. But a lot of love went into the pot with the wine, sugar, ginger, white pepper and vanilla. That's got to count for something, right?

@Erika, I hear you, girl! Maybe this time next year, I can keep a pear or 2 back for myself when their dad's tree is giving its bounty.

You sound like a good cook Ms.Kestrela, I will have to pair you with my 80-year-old Greek mother, awesome cook, and baker. Keep up the good work!!!

Thanks, Chica and Giannis! I'd love to spend time in a kitchen with your Greek grandmother, Giannis. I wish I had had a chance to spend more time with my own grandmother when I was growing up.

Wow, you SHOULD cook for yourself more, it sounds like you're really good at it! Dehydrating fruits really does make for good snacking; a year or two ago I dehydrated some apricots from our tree and everyone enjoyed them. Sadly, the dehydrator lid was broken at the end of that season. :( Have to do something about that. Anyway, sounds like your day was very fruitful! (Hey, wait... I honestly didn't try for that, but that turned out kind of funny! ...Okay, slap me now.) :). Happy to hear you had a good day! ^^

Whups! Sorry, @Gianni! LOL, @Meadow, I saw what you did there! The dehydrated slices are almost done. I'll turn down the temp and let them go overnight, so they'll be nice and crispy.

Thanks, @Draglist. It's so nice to live in a neighborhood where you can count on your neighbors. We're pretty rural, and there is some unsavory activity in the area. These neighbors are experienced hunters, and keep a lookout in our area. ;) I watch their dogs when the go mudbugging for the weekend, and they keep and eye on me. They keep my property mowed, and warn me of dangers in the area.

Reading your journal, I thought I was reading a Martha Stewart blog! Oh and the "lead us not into temptation" bahh haha! Way to go resisting. I use to make pear butter. Now that's AMAZING. Dehydrated pears sound great!

Definitely start cooking for yourself! I do every day and find it so rewarding to know I prepared what is good for me and it keeps me on track as well. Glad you enjoyed cooking for your neighbors and it gave you enthusiasm to do it for yourself :)

Your strength is amazing! I am trying to resist the figs from my fig tree - darn near impossible. I'm sure your neighbours appreciated the poached pears - who wouldn't!

Kes, did you leave the peel on when you dehydrate the pears? Did you have to soak them in anything? I have a nice dehydrator, but only use it for jerky. My friend canned 40 lbs of pears yesterday and also made pear jelly. Sounds lovely, but even from 12 mile away my bg shrieked..

Frankie... Figs are one of my fruit downfalls. I get some from a friend every year and dehydrate them as gifts for my SIL... She never gets them all... Oh well, one or two or 6 a day shouldn't hurt the BG, right?!!

Oh my...that sounds so yummy. I swear I have a harder time resisting high sugar fruit than any other sweet.
