my new organic grassfed order came in and I started with making a bone broth from chicken bones. I did not do the braising or anything just threw them in the pot with a little minced garlic and 1/4 onion. both items can effect my histamine intolerance but I think it is getting a little better since my elimination diet.

this morning it was great to warm up with some broth. and fresh it has very little to no effect on me symptom wise. I wanted clean grassfed bones to chew on to get some badly needed minerals more naturally. I do enjoy chewing the bones. did you know that 100 grams of raw chicken bone (a mix and match of all types) contains 5.5 grams (5500 mg) calcium and 2.6 grams (2600 mg) phosphorus. (one whole bone equals about 18 grams) Bone broth in itself is pretty low in calcium and other minerals, great for collagen. so with eating a couple bones (most is edible) and having a couple cups of broth I am getting a power packed punch of minerals and some natural collagen. I am hoping this will help my skin issues. plus a nice way to start the morning!

I don't have good homemade broth, but plan on fasting today and maybe having a couple cups to keep me going. I love the taste. And it snowed last night so hit broth on a cold day is even better! I need to make my own soon!

I will buy chicken feet this weekend, I was researching about food with good sources of collagen. I don't remember when was the last time I ate chicken feet but like them. 🐥😁

I've started keeping my chicken bones and putting them in the instant pot to pressure cook them with some broth. Thereafter I put them in the Vitamix to puree them, freeze them and them add them back to soups. The taste is not bad. But, I have to be VERY careful of the miniature bones that end up at the bottom of the Vitamix... I've tried to find info about this on the web, but nada. It's my own strange concoction. I've noticed a difference in my skin, but not sure if it's my imagination. I hope I'm not shooting myself in the foot!

yes CB it is great, you can use the leftover chicken carcass if you make roast chicken or buy some chicken feet or even wings if they are cheap enough. great collagen and cooking overnight in the slowcooker the bones are nice and soft. you can also add some veggies to add to the minerals and vitamins for your broth. winter is here!

good for you Keilin I have never tried chicken feet but I got some organic grassfed chicken tails to cook up too. figured if I crisp them up they might be a nice snack.

NowIunderstand that is a clever idea. I found the info from a natural dog food person, she did all the research and had a study showing the breakdown. I know probably some of it is lost in the broth, but since I get both it should balance out decently.

I need to try some home made chicken bone broth, I have only done the beef bones until now...

When you make the broth throw in some vinegar as it will leech out the calcium into the broth. When you are done boiling them down the bones will actually be soft and bendy as all the nutrient are now in the broth! Really adds to the flavour and richness of the broth.

Carol the studies done shows that the vinegar or other products don't actually make a difference to the calcium content of the broth. I don't remember if it helps with the collagen as I was not focused on that. some chefs looked into the issue with lab work to prove that calcium was higher but they were surprised. it is in the 2% range I believe and with veggies naturally it increased a bit. chicken bones cook up to just about mush overnight. It was easy to get to the marrow and the ends just crumbled in my hands.

Adef the big value is in the bones, but yes you can eat the gristle too for extra collagen. I always eat the ends of my chicken bones these days. chicken tails fried will give you both the minerals and the collagen. I bet your wife could make a tastey snack food out of those too.

That is interesting! In my cookbooks and as well as my husband (who is the receptacle of all knowledge!) assured me that this was so. Interesting. I do know that when I do it this way it gets gelatinous which I figured was also from the vinegar??

That broth sounds delicious - especially with the colder weather!

I get that gelatinous layer too and I don't use anything, just long term in the slow cooker. I think that is more the collagen which is extremely beneficial too. there are tons of value to bone broth besides trying to get more calcium. You can look up calcium in chicken bones and probably find the study I did. lots of info on this and other benefits.

yes Nikeit and you can make soups out of this too. just put your veggies in the last hour or two. I guess it depends on the veggies how long it takes in the slow cooker. my onion is still partially together after 20 hours, but I put it in there as a big piece.

gosh this grassfed chicken bones really made a difference in the final product. the bone broth in the fridge overnight is all gelatin like substance. much thicker than longer cooking with the regular chicken. somehow that makes me feel better!

Nice. I love those broths. Have some in the freezer right now for my future soup

We have a Hutterite colony nearby. We get all of our chicken and turkey from them. It is meaty and really tastes like chicken instead of the bland taste of the chicken we get from the grocery store. I always make bone broth from the bones and it is wonderful stuff!
