Day 3 of a planned 5 day fast

The scale is not moving at all! This is amazing because I have done the best on this current fast than I have ever done. Yesterday I kept my carbs below 10 carbs.

However, for some reason my glucometer reading this morning was 90! When I am three days into a fast I should be in the high 70s. Something is keeping my blood sugar high?! As Dr. Fung says, insulin causes me to be fat, calories don't matter (I know most people will not believe this, but after not eating for 3 days and not losing a pound (on the scale) I am now a believer).

Anyway, my blood sugar will eventually fall (I plan to do a 5 mile run this morning and that should help).

A few more things:

* I feel GREAT on this fast. No moments of headaches, upset stomach, or dizziness. I credit this to drinking a lot of HI-Lyte electrolyte concentrate. Perhaps this is related to the lack of loss on the scale (because I am retaining a lot of water)? I'm ok with this because keeping my carbs low, and feeling great is something I can stick with.

* @jimmiepop suggested I get a kit to measure my body fat. It finally came last night. Good thing I did. My true goal weight appears to be 171 not 160 :) (see my post at: https://bit.ly/2KoXCSK) When I look in the mirror it looks like I only have 10-15 pounds to lose. The BMI calculators say I should be 160. I reset my weight goal on FS to 170.

I am glad I am journaling about not losing a pound after three days of fasting. When I look back on this I will know what 'happened on the other side'.

The irony is that I have read on FS where people say "you need to eat a certain amount of calories to lose weight or you will go into starvation mode and it will slow your weight loss".

I did a lot of research on this (See: Fasting vs. Eating Less: What's the Difference? (Science of Fasting) https://bit.ly/2rWYwNO) and as I sit here I KNOW that my metabolism is not slow. I literally bounced out of bed this morning full of energy. I 'think' that my body is 'full of water'. I drink a lot of water but I do not go to the bathroom that much. I think this is because of the HI-Lyte electrolyte concentrate.

Also, I only took in 100 calories yesterday, could it really be that my metabolism has slowed down so much that it is only burning less than 100 calories and that is why I have no weight loss on the scale?

Research has shown "Your metabolism will only slow down if you’ve consumed less than 50% of your required calorie intake for several weeks or months AND even then only by 10% at the most" - https://bit.ly/2txRhuE

I'm not trying to convince anyone to fast, I just want to share my results with people who are fasting in case they hit this same situation I am in (the scale is not moving).

Anyway, let's see what happens next! I plan to stay on this fast until Friday and then re-start it on Monday.

I have no doubt, you will get good results. Fasting also has other benefits besides weight loss, one of them is cleaning out the arteries. Good luck on you fasting!

@Steven Anthony - You are correct. I feel a healthy as I have ever been in my life. Also, my wife recently came down with a nasty cold for a few days. Me, I was fine! :)

@MLWare - Thank you for the support! I'm just journaling to provide information for others to use in any way they want :)

HI! Google Dr Fung Dawn phenomenon 😂

You mention testing your blood sugar... maybe some of the foods you eat affect your blood sugar unusually. A neighbor of mine was recently diagnosed with out of control diabetes; her numbers skewed into three digits. No one knew why; she followed the diet religiously. It turned out cauliflower messed her up. ??? And she can eat as much cantaloupe as she wants with no issues. She had to fast and test every food she ate, testing her blood, until she found the foods she could eat safely. And now she's fine.

Nice work. So pleased that you decided to toss BMI, which is useless for fit people, and adjust your scale weight goal. Def the right choice. I have had the scale go up while fasting. It doesn't matter. Just water. If you are taking in sodium, your blood volume will increase. Also, your body replaces fat with water at the cellular level when losing fat rapidly. In a day you will have a 1-2 pound drop. Everyone will cheer, but the reality is we're just celebrating yesterday's fat loss. Fat loss in a consistent deficit is linear. Scale weight loss is rarely linear. See Lyle McDonald's "Whoosh" article for more on this.

A true fast is with water only, maybe some green tea or coffee for the body to rest and reboot. Anything else can trigger BS. And also when burning fat you can have echoes of high BS or some people will. I am one of those people.

Dawn Phenomenon - it's the last of the blood sugars to go down and will be about your highest.

@Inacarsometimes - I totally agree that a water fast with 0 carbs is the best. While I get a little better wit each fast, I just seem to not be able to get to that 100%.

@jimmiepop - Thanks for the support man! I will check out that article!

@minitata - Thanks I will check my levels throughout the day today.

@SoCalPam - Yes, I am totally with you on this and plan to test myself throughout the day. I am only drinking water, green tea, home made beef broth, and coffee, but I need to see if something is triggering the higher blood sugar (other than the 'dawn effect')

I’ve been wondering if my small drips on the scale have something to do with salt intake. I’ve noticed that I don’t sweat as much when working out and I don’t have to pee every 5 minutes anymore either lol

Oh and do you think the fake sugars could be affecting you?
27 Jun 18 by member: CrashtestDawnie
.. also I realized I am taking 800mg Motrin for tinnitus...

@CrashtestDawnie - Fake sugars are the number one suspect. Will monitor myself during the day. I got the liquid Splenda but not surprisingly it doesn't taste nearly as good as the granulated one that has 'fillers' (that are basically carbs). However, for now green tea with Splenda makes me happy. I am willing to take slower weight loss for now if it turns out this is the case. I may change my mind in the future. For example I did not have a Big Mac this past weekend and I wont have one this weekend. THAT is a MAJOR change for me :)

Hello im new to this i wanted to ask you how does “fasting” work? Do you now eat at all just drink liquids? Thanks in advance :)

@CrashtestDawnie - 'less liquid leaving my body' has been the case during this entire fast.
