Fritzy 22's Journal, 06 August 2020

I haven't been here for awhile. Unlike all the journal comments I've read, I AM NOT sticking to a good eating plan and have been steadily gaining weight. I no longer even weigh myself since I know I am no longer in "one-der land". I don't see many or any comments from people who are like me - staying home because of the coronavirus. All the time, not working from home. I am retired and probably in a high risk group because I am 65 and am obese (I was so excited when I went from obese to overweight, but that is no longer the case) and I have bad allergies. Also, even if my risk of getting sick enough to be in the hospital and/or on a ventilator is really low, like one in 1000, or 1 in 10,000 - I am not going to risk it.

To me the most dangerous place to go is the grocery store because EVERYONE goes there. So I try to go as little as possible and spend as little time there as possible. Although I did risk a trip to Costco about 2 weeks ago before my membership ran out. Spent about $250 and I now have enough food in the pantry and freezer to probably get me through November. And Costco seemed pretty safe, everyone had masks on and it wasn't crowded. AND they had everything on my list.

I've wondered if I might be mildly depressed. I could literally just stay in bed all day, every day. Sometimes I do. Having a dog and cats makes me have to at least get up to feed them and clean litter boxes, etc. I don't feel sad, or blue - just bored most of the time.

I have found that if before I go to bed I make a list of just a few things to do the next day I have more energy and feel better. Just things like "vacuum for 20 minutes, clean the bathroom mirror, etc".

I need to try to lose some weight. But I know myself and to be successful I have to be totally committed. Right now I'm not. But I'll try. Even with mostly processed food in the house I can keep track of calories and know I will lose weight if I don't have snacks in the house. I actually had to order some larger clothes because everything is too tight and I know I look silly in August wearing sweat pants or sleep pants because they aren't tight on me. But since no one sees me except the dog and cats I guess it doesn't matter. The cats are getting fat too.

I have managed to get some things done. I had the deck rails replaced and the deck looks really nice. A couple weeks ago I had my kitchen cabinets painted. They also look great, I had them painted blue! I just bought new outside light fixtures to replace the dated fixtured (the house is about 30 years old) and the outside of the house will be painted in a couple of weeks. I took care of a juvenile wild turkey for a few days that was full of stickers and then drove him to a wildlife rescue because they knew how to care from him and I was getting attached, like he was a pet! And I bought a new car! I found out I could do the whole purchase online and the dealership delivered the car to me. I did stop at the dealership briefly after going to Costco just to make sure I liked the car and the color - a Mazda CX-5 in a real pretty blue. My niece bought my 2009 Rogue and was so excited. She just got a job in Washington and will take the car from the Bay Area to relocate. The car is in good shape, I just never keep a car when it is close to over over $100k miles.

I may make Monday my "start" date to get back on track. I will pull the treadmill out of the closet and put that on my list of things to do each day.

Thanks Shirflleur-I feed the birds and squirrels too and enjoy watching them. I bought a huge bag of peanuts at the feed store for the squirrels and blue jays. I noticed tiny little titmouses trying to pick up a peanut so I shelled several of them. The titmouses came back and flew off with a shelled nut and so did some little nuthatches. They are so tiny and I have no idea how they can eat a peanut! Forgive me for not acknowledging everyone individually but I do appreciate the support. I need to make a list of things to do tomorrow and at the bottom of the list I will put to make a list for the next day. It seems like I do things for about 3 days and then fall back into my lazy ways. I will move the treadmill tomorrow and Bearnoggin thanks for the idea to use my kindle fire to watch episodes while on the treadmill. And Melissa - I am really looking forward to the time when I can get back to my trips to the coast every 6 to 8 weeks. But I am putting money aside for future trips and have enough now for 2 to 3 trips. Katsolo, I did take a picture of the little turkey, and also my painted cabinets, the new deck rails, the old outside light fixtures and the new ones! I take lots of pictures and do keep in touch with friends and family. I've had several visits with people outside on my deck where it's easy to stay 6 feet apart. I even went to lunch with a friend at the clubhouse at the golf course in my neighborhood where they have outdoor seating. I may do that again but I've noticed an increase in the coronavirus cases in my zip code so need to take care. I may try to do a 72 hour liquid fast to start things off. I've done that 3 or 4 times and usually feel good during the fast and afterwards. I don't do just water, but will have tea, hot chocolate and sometimes diet soda.

When you make that list tonight remember to put "Check in with FS peeps". Give someone a smile which will put a smile on your face too 😁

Thanks Wholefoodnut. I know it helps when I log in here and check in with everyone who are so supportive. It's good to know I am not alone in this struggle. Raineybird - I added FS to my list, thanks for the idea! I just put a couple of things to start with, if the list is too long I won't do it but I can add more each day.

You can't worry about falling off the wagon. If I had a dollar for every time I did that, I'd be retired too. All you can do is make a healthy choice in the moment. Get up and go outside, just be smart about it. Interact with people, just do it in a safe way. Hiding out of fear, is no way to live, and neither is beating yourself up about your weight. Find something you enjoy doing and go do it, and stop comparing yourself to others on here. I just saw a guy with a body I'd kill for complaining about his weight and another person making a diy McGriddle (it looked great, btw). You got this Fritzy, one step at a time.

Christmas 2019 I am not sure if you were replying to my post or Fritzy's but I'm sorry to hear about your husband's cancer. I pray the best for you both! I'm new to posting/sharing so I haven't quite figured out how to post to someone specifically or if it's possible. But please feel free to follow me as well and I'm here too if you need a chat!

Fritzy I might not be the best for advice but I hope you can shake off the blues. I totally agree that making a list of activities to accomplish will be beneficial- just try not to overload your daily list- that can have the reverse effect intended. I think your idea of pulling out the dreadmill is a great idea! Set yourself up with a daily goal- don’t set the bar too high to start- no need to burn out in the first few days start off easy, give yourself room to grow. Try to start a streak- is how many days you can do an easy task- like walking a mile or 2 on the treadmill. In 2015 2 friends of mine set a goal of running a minimum of a mile each day for the year- and they did it, it inspired me to try it in 2016. I had plenty of great days running 10 miles or more but had a fair share of days when it was a struggle to do the 1 mile minimum, but I was able to accomplish the year long streak 1 day at a time. I remember 1 week where I did the minimum 4 days in a row- but that was ok- I did it, and you can too! Lately I have been enjoying a little screen time while working out.

its a marathon not a race and I honestly think most of us are in a little funk these days. One thing you can control is the kindness you give yourself. Be happy my friend...

You have lots of advice and support here. I have an autoimmune cesspool and coming off of chemo, so in the same boat. I went to shelter-in-place back in November. I love to cook and am pretty darn good at it too, so I feel your pain. BUT I am glad to see you back here and would only add, start small (so you don't get overwhelmed) and just take one step at a time. I have to do news breaks also, as all of it is so depressing. Hang in there, girl. I'm glad you are back!

I always enjoy hearing from you so was happy to see you had posted. I'm sad you are struggling but like others have commented many are these days. I am happy you have found some things to break up the monotony of your stay at home days. I was going to suggest getting together with friends even if you have to keep your distance. I was glad to see you're already doing that. Keep checking in with us here on FS. We care about you & I'm here to offer encouragement! I have a partner at home with me, stay in touch with friends & family & get out when I can....safely with my mask & hand sanitizer. But, I have still had moments of feeling down & regret we can't just get back to life as usual. I think it's pretty normal. One step at a time....one day at a time.... ❤

I suffer from major depression so I know how it’s like to gain weight. Just keep your head up high and know that every step you take while working out is a step in a healthier and longer life!

I'm scared of COVID too. The only place hubby and I will go is work. We avoid shopping in person "like the plague." We figure if we have to spend $10 to have our groceries delivered to our door, then that's a small price to pay compared to the amount of money we'd have to spend if we got COVID. Also we figure the delivery people need the money, so we feel good about helping people out. (We use Instacart.) As for having to stay home....We do a lot of telecommuting, so we don't have to be physically at work as much. We actually enjoy staying home. I know some of my coworkers enjoy retirement and others do not. Hubby and I aren't very social, but he'll have a problem with retirement. I won't. I'm already planning to retire within 2-3 years, unless COVID forces me to retire sooner since my work place is financially struggling. I'm already thinking of all the things I can do around the house and around my yard. My biggest frustration is my hip pain. I just have a feeling I will have to replace it sooner or later, but until then....I'm still going to fight it. You might want to consider watching a funny YouTube video every morning to try to get yourself to laugh. Laughter is a big key to survival.

Hi - just another person commenting to say you are not alone. This is hard and social isolation affects all of us. An audiobook might be something else to pass the time and engage the mind. You can lay in bed and listen, with the fur babies next to you. Funny books, trashy books, mysteries, novels, biographies - whatever you like. When you feel better, listen on the treadmill or while you’re cleaning the house. You can download apps to your phone, iPad or device called Overdrive or Hoopla - it’s free - because it connects to your local public library. You pay nothing for audiobooks through these apps. Call your local library to have them walk you through it or if you mask up, bring your device to library & they will get you set up. You could talk about books with friends via Zoom once a month. I love to read so we could even have once a month FS book chats here! Take care of yourself. ❣️

It sucks that you did so well living off only legumes or whatever is the Daniel fast that seemed like pure torture- but you don't have that kind of commitment/will power with every day food. Clearly you are very strong and determined when you want to be so I hope that you will make that choice soon. I miss seeing your regular posts. I am glad you checked in. I wish I lived nearby to say hello from several feet away. :)

We don't have titmouses or nuthatches here, but we do have little house finches. The doves are so funny, because they bully each other and are so busy chasing each other off they don't have time to eat. Being in the middle of the city I don't see the variety I would in a more rural setting, but I do enjoy what's here. Nice to think we might be out enjoying the birds & squirrels at the same time. Hope you have a good day! 💛
