Fritzy 22's Journal, 29 June 2020

Thermometers are the new toilet paper. At first no one could find toilet paper. Now there is plenty although I always bought in bulk at Costco so have plenty. But has anyone tried to buy a thermometer? I bought one a couple weeks before the stay at home order. It seems like the little digital oral ones don't last long or always need a new battery. Anyway, my dog got a hold of the thermometer and although he didn't break it, there are teeth marks in the rubbery part. I can still use it, after sterilizing it.

But, I asked my pharmacist if they had any. There were none in the area where they usually keep them. They said they had only one, it was over $80 and is used on the forehead. I really didn't want to spend so much money and if I did, I want to check out reviews first. Then today I went into the next town and stopped at Walgreens. Asked them about thermometers and was told they never get them any more but the girl thought there was one by the register that was expensive. It was about $80 and was the same type as the one at the other pharmacy. Don't want to order from Amazon, they have nothing I want or even trust. I got one from them back in March and it was from China, had no instructions even though the box said instructions were inside. It didn't show Fahrenheit and there was no way to change from celsius and the battery was low!

I hate how it's so hard to find so many things. I stopped in the big grocery store since I was in town and the canned soups, like Progresso and the Campbell's special soups had a limit of one per customer! Crazy stuff. But I can see that since we have so many retired people in the area that it would be easy to just keep the cupboard stocked with 50 cans of soup or something. I was excited to find chicken pot pies in the freezer section and bought 4 of them. When you wait weeks to go grocery shopping it helps to have things like that in the freezer.

My county has so many more cases of the coronavirus. Still not much, just over 100 but there were only 42 cases for a couple of months until they started reopening places.

Hi Fritzy!!! When the original panic started, it was hard to get paper supplies and medical supplies, then when i went on the work at home program, I went out early in the morning. Supplies have leveled out now. But i got hand sanitizer, masks, gloves, little by little and increase supplies before all hell breaks loose on panic again. In Florida we have of grocery stores, try your odd ball stores like Save Alot, dollar general, neighborhood convenient food shop ect, Walgreens got restocked, and my boyfriend bpught an extra TP and papertowls while they are in stock.

Maine coon - I have always been a Costco type shopper and live in a rural area so I use trips to Costco and Winco to make sure I have plenty of stuff on hand. When I saw what was going on in Italy I went to Winco and was able to nab a 4 pack of Clorox wipes. Also have enough tp, paper towels, laundry soap and cleaning supplies for probably a year. Today was the first time I saw hand sanitizer - I've just been using soap. It was at the paint store and also at Walgreens. New anxiety for me just happened. A fire. It's fire season and this fire is just outside the security gate to my neighborhood, about 2 miles away. June 29, 2020 at 4:32 PM There are no evacuations at this time. Firefighters are doing a great job at building line and Helicopter 514 is working hotspots. Please do not attempt to “go have a look.” June 29, 2020 at 4:27 PM Tankers are remaining in orbit at this time, firefighters on the ground are close to completing the line. June 29, 2020 at 4:21 PM The fire is holding within the containment lines at approximately 2 acres. IC hopes full containment in under 2 hours.

Take care of yourself, Fritzy, it's gotten worse here, too, and things are being closed again. You should buy some 15 bean soup mix (the kind without the broth in it - keeps longer). That's a big part of my emergency rations.

The fire is out. It was just scary knowing it was so close and they make a big deal out of every fire in northern California. They jumped all over it and it was 100% contained by evening. I'm just so glad we weren't evacuated. Thanks Maine Coon, Kattay and Irish Rain. Katsolo - I may look into soup mixes. I bought a mix for minestrone soup but it made so much I couldn't use it all.

the mixes all have salt and other preservatives. if you just get the bean mix, you can flavor the broth with anything from tomato sauce and water to beer and bullion depending on what you feel like. if your minestrone mix was the dry kind, put leftover mix in a plastic ziploc bag or plastic container and toss it into the fridge for a few weeks until you're up for it again.

Oh wow! I'm glad fire fear was short lived... For now. I'm sorry you are back into that season. Be safe! 🙏 I too was looking for a thermometer a while back with no success... I surely have an old one kicking around, but I haven't been able to locate it. 😢

No glass ones either I’m guessing? Definitely don’t need a fancy digital. Good old fashion one is perfect and reliable. A hand to the forehead is good— warm or not warm. The checking the temperature everywhere you go is sort of questionable. So someone knows he has a fever, knows he has been exposed but still wants to go to Disney world anyway, just pops a couple Tylenol an hour ahead of time and he’s good to go.

I think Clorox type wipes will never be seen here in SoCal again. I last bought them in March. None seen since. I have one container still left then it will be hydrogen peroxide, alcohol and my homemade wipes that I can make just using plain bleach. 4 teaspoons to a quart of water.

Kenna, Costco doesn’t have the name brand Clorox wipes all the time, but the Kirkland ones are back in stock pretty much each week.

Yes I bought mine from Costco. They have no contact ones now.

It has been such a long, long time since you posted. I hope you are alright. I know you are in the middle of fire danger season. That combined with the covid troubles has to be stressful. Thinking of you! ❤️

When you can find one get an old fashion glass one, although they no longer are made of glass and they no longer have mercury in them but they are inexpensive and accurate. Very few of the electronic ones are accurate anyway, just like scales.

If the virus doesn’t kill you the sodium in the canned soup will.

Just came to check on you. I like to go to my followers list and see who I haven't seen. I think 1/2 week I follow aren't even on anymore. Hope you are hanging in there!

Thanks everyone! I'm fine. I just don't check in much because the WOE is not fine. I'm really not bothering with it now. I am concerned about the virus and don't get to the grocery store much so I am eating out of the pantry and freezer still. More processed food than I would like, but that's what I'm doing. Kenna Morton - I'm not worrying about the canned soup. I was raised on processed food and I am not worried about the sodium in the soup. My blood pressure is fine, and when I have soup I have 1/2 can. Thanks Melissa and DP for thinking of me. I do stress about the fire season. There have been 4 fires near me in the past 3 weeks. All of them were put out quickly, but every time the wind starts blowing I take an anti anxiety pill. I do tend to worry.
