Performance: losing 1.7 lb a week

Goal Weight

Still to go: 74.2 lb
My name is Sandy. I'm married to a wonderful man and between us we have 5 children and 3 grandchildren. I'm 51 years old and just retired in September after 24 years of working at the same job. I'm a photographer and I'm working on starting my own business. I'd lost 50 lbs in 2009 doing weight watchers and last Xmas was down to 192 pounds. Surgery, Stress and pressures at work got to me and I gained all the weight back plus some, finding myself needing to lose about 60 lbs. I started losing weight as soon as I retired without even having to work at it. Stress does horrible things to a persons' health.

My husbands' health issues are pressing him to lose weight as well and he does best on Atkins so I decided to join him. I think it's easier on both of us to be doing the same plan. We started induction on 11/8 and are both doing great. We both need to move more and after induction we will start a "fitness plan" to get us motivated. We are committed to our weight loss and the glowing good health that comes with it. Wish us luck!

What's for dinner?
Butternut Squash & Crab Bisque Recipe
(Adapted from Rocky Mountain News
http://gimmesomeoven.com/butternut-squash-and-crab-bisque/

Ingredients:

4 large cloves garlic, roasted
3 Tbsp. olive oil
1 1/2 to 2 lbs. butternut squash, peeled and cubed
1 large yellow onion, diced
1 cup fresh carrots, diced
1 cup fresh celery, diced
1 quart chicken broth, divided use
1 Tbsp. fresh sage leaves, finely chopped
1 cup half and half (or milk)
12 ounces crab claw meat
Salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste

Method:

Prepare roasted garlic while you prepare the veggies. (For instructions on how to peel/seed/cut butternut squash, see here.)

In a large (at least 5 quart) soup pot over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once butter is melted, add squash, onions, carrots, celery and garlic. Saute 5 minutes.

Add 3 cups of broth, reserving the rest. Cover pot and reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until squash is very tender (about 30 minutes).

Add the half-and-half (or milk) and puree the mixture with an immersion blender until very smooth (or blend in batches in blender and return to pan). Thin with remaining broth if desired.

Fold in the crab meat and sage. Season generously with salt and pepper and serve.

Protein Powder
I use vanilla protein powder with 2 ice cubes, 8 oz of cold water and an oz of tofu. Throw in just an oz or so of some berries, sweeten with splenda if you like them sweet and blend. Sooooo good after a workout.
The tofu makes the shake a little thicker and you can't taste it at all. Extra protein too.

Share your tip for stopping
I've been either chewing mint flavored gum or brushing my teeth and finding something to keep me busy. I've been having a really hard time with evenings. I really want something sweet. Not Splenda sweet, but glazed donut kind of sweet. Night before last I went to bed at 7:30 to avoid the ricotta pie that was calling to me from the kitchen. I'd already eaten one piece for dessert!

Losing or maintaining weight after surgery
Hi Moira,

I had foot surgery in February for some nerve damage and gained back the 50+ pounds that I'd lost the previous year. Unfortunately I had the attitude that I couldn't exercise and was just in too much pain to worry about dieting. I'm glad to see you had enough sense to nip it in the bud before too much weight gain. I can't advise you on your diet but there are plenty of low impact exercise programs that you can do depending on your fitness level. As for recovery being 6 months, I wouldnt be surprised. Mine was February and although I can walk on it, it does still have its limitations. You may not be able to do the serious workout stuff, but there are so many other options to keep your metabolism revved up.
