I am in my mid-50s and would like to lose 40 to 50 pounds. This is the same 40 to 50 pounds I have been gaining and losing all my life. Now I'm starting to have some health problems, made worse by my weight. I really want to live an active lifestyle without pain. Losing weight and keeping it off is critical for me at this time in my life. I am on a low carb, high fiber, high protein diet of 1,500 calories or less per day. Since Jan 1st. I have averaged about 1400 calories a day and have lost 8 lbs. Glad to have a group of people with similar goals!

Looking for a good plan
I went to new doctors in January (general, cardiac and orthopedic). They told me blatantly that, although I do have some arthritis, my weight was causing the majority of my pain. They said, "To lose weight, concentrate on diet". They felt that the exercise could be added slowly as the weight came off. I was worried that because I could only walk slowly for a short distance that I wouldn't lose weight. But they were right! Once I controlled the diet, the weight started coming off and over time I have been able to walk farther and a little faster. In the last week I have added some light weight training too. I have a lot less pain, so I guess they were right. Good luck and hang in there!

How Often Do you weigh yourself?
Once a week on Wednesdays. That way any inconsistencies from the weekend are gone.

Terrapin12, thanks! I will check out both books. I would describe myself as optimistic, but then have to admit that it doesn't take much for me to be plagued with worry, often about things I can't control.
