How Often Do you weigh yourself?
I might weigh myself pretty much any time I am in the gym, but I only record my weight on fatsecret on my Saturday morning weigh-in at the gym. Less variability that way.

Introductions
Hello all, I am new to the site and thought I would take a few minutes to introduce myself and tell a little bit about myself. I have been somewhat overweight all of my life, but nothing like I am now. I weigh about 100 pounds more than I have weighed at any other point in my life. I am 48 years old and for most of my life I weighed between 220 and 250 pounds, definitely not fit, but certainly not the 350+ pounds I found myself weighing when I went in for a regular check-up with the doctor last week. There are likely several causes for my ballooning weight, the most general being my age. It is certainly true that the metabolism slows down as you age. Another contributing factor would have to be my work environment. Just before I started putting on the weight, I was production worker in a manufacturing environment doing a fairly physical job. Now I am in management and the heaviest thing I pick up anymore is a pen. If I am lucky I might make a lap or two around the production floor in a day, but this is more the exception than the rule. Along with the movement into management came the freedom to eat out on a regular basis during the workday, generally with no concern for the health benefits of the food I was eating.

I was diagnosed with hypertension a few years ago, and take medicine to control that. That was what brought me to the doctor’s office last week, time to refill my prescriptions. It was during this visit that my Dr. took the time to explain to me what I was doing to my body by carrying around all the extra weight. He mentioned things like diabetes, heat attack, and back problems. I already knew all of this, but it brought it home when put it to me so plain. I had already started exercising on an increasingly infrequent basis a couple of months previous when my wife and I joined a local fitness center. I generally spend an hour on the stationary recumbent bicycle and burn about 500 calories, but like I said, after the first month of almost daily workouts, they were becoming less frequent. Dr. D was quick to point out to me that exercising is great, especially for my cardio health, but if I don’t control what I eat, I’m not going to lose ANY weight. I will just consume more to make up for the calories burned with exercise.

I had recently purchased an android Smartphone and it was after this physicians visit that I decided to see if there were any apps on the phone that could help me with my weight loss. That was when I found the Fatsecret Calorie Counter in the marketplace. Downloaded and installed the app and began trying out different aspects of it and I truly love it. The app brought me to the fatsecret website with the wealth of information available here and I am excited.

I once had a very wise boss who had a saying that I believe really applies to the fatsecret app and weight loss in general. He said, “You can’t control what you don’t measure,” and that is so very true. The fatsecret app gives me the ability to easily track and measure not only my calories consumed, but also my exercise regimen and my weight loss. I have found that I don’t have to set a precise number for calories consumed each day, just a range, and by the sheer fact that I am measuring the calories will cause me to control them. Right now I am averaging in the range of 2,000 to 2,300 calories per day and exercising a few days a week and the weight seems to be coming off fairly naturally right now.

At weigh in at the gym last night, the scales indicated 339 pounds and my goal is 220. I know it won’t happen this year, but I would certainly like to be down to 220 pounds by summer of 2012.
