I want to live an active lifestyle (surfing, hiking, bike riding), but am held back by my lack of energy. I'm 24 and have been overweight most of my life. I have a great personality, and love to laugh. I think I have a healthy level of self-esteem, with the exception of how I look. That's because as of today (4/01/07) I am at my highest weight of 312! My goal is to get down to 230 with a good amount of muscle. This is ideal because I am 6'3" with a large frame. I've tried many diets before, but fail due to lack of motivation.

Can we have a section for guys?
I'm currently doing the abs diet. There are so few guys on the Abs diet, that I lack the feedback necessary for motivation and accountability. So, I would like to get feedback from a larger group of people. But, getting tips from a mother of six children, doesn't quite work for me. Women have different needs and body types than men. I could definitely relate to a guy more than a women.

I would like to see a forum dedicated to the minority of men. Nothing major, just a way to get tips from other guys in my situation.

Make it a bet!
Right now I have two separate bets for weight loss. One with my friend and one with a co-worker. I'm not much of a competitive person, but I wanted a way to keep myself accountable. And having accountability at work and in my personal life helps. Each bet is 50 bucks for most weight lost in 90 days. I figure, if I lose a lot of weight (my goal is 55 lbs) , I'll secure 100 bucks!, if I slack off, I'm out a hundred. I don't make very much working at a charity, so not losing 100 bucks is a good enough motivation.

Chipotle
Meat is great (high in protein), but try to stay away from the red meats. Boneless Skinless Chick Breasts, are practically the best thing to eat. They are loaded with protein, low in fat and calories. I would eat chicken every day, if i didn't get sick of the same thing.

Exercising
Circuit training is good, because it builds the muscle needed to increase your metabolism and keeps your heart-rate up all at the same time. The stability ball is good because it strengthens your core, but Yoga is even better. Yoga strengthens the body's core, helps you become more limber and teaches breathing techniques similar to meditation. You just have to get past the idea that you look like an idiot doing it. I would suggest starting with Yoga (or even better Power Yoga) and then going straight into a circuit workout, to keep up your heart rate.

Where's all the pictures?
I am surprised that so many people lack a picture of themselves.
Talk about motivation!

I jumped at the chance to put my picture up. Not that I enjoy how I look, I wouldn't be here if i did. Sharing your picture is just as important as sharing your story. Your story allows people to know who you are and where your coming from. This allows people to relate. When several people come together and can relate to each other, it builds a community. Your picture(s) can also be used to relate to others. Let other people watch your progress. A lot of people (including myself) don't see themselves change over time. But a picture is a good way to notice the change. It also allows people to comment on how you are looking. Criticism is an effective motivational tool. I get motivated when I get complements. It helps me realize I'm doing something right.
I would suggest finding the worst picture you can find. You know, the one with bad lighting, a horrible angle or a not-so-flattering position.
As soon as I find my not-so-flattering position picture, it is going up. I already have one in mind, just have to find it.
