maeday42's Journal, 21 February 2017

Did you ever wonder why people have to be hurtful? I've spent my whole life hearing all kinds of degrading things. I found support and information on this site and I really love it for being an outlet for things I can't say to my friends/family. I deleted that comment yesterday, I didn't want to see it when I look back through my journal. I tend to do that when I'm feeling like I need a to remind myself that I can be better! I can reach my goal! I'm riding the dreaded bicycle and getting better at it. I an consistently loosing weight, lowered my A1C and feel the best I have in a long time.

I went on a vacation to Australia and fell into a coma, that's how I found out I was diabetic. I was 40 then. For 10 years I controlled my diabetes by diet and exercise, then I hit "that age" and my body changed and seemed to decide no matter how closely I follow the "diet" given to me by the medical professionals, my sugars still sky-rocked. At age 54 I decided I've got to do something, I want to retire and want to do better then my Dad. He retired, got a single retirement check, then died. The second check came, they made my Mom send it back. He was 62. He was in the military, worked 2 jobs to give us a home and was always a big support to me and my brothers. He's been gone a long time now (I still miss him), but I saw his struggles with diabetes the way he lost his foot first, then his leg and finally his life to it. I decided to take control of my life and my diabetes using the keto way of eating. It's working for me and no matter what ANYONE says - I will do this! I will get healthy and I will survive!

You are amazing. I live in a retirement community, so many people won't fight the fight. Stay positive, eliminate toxic people in your life. Go outside everyday, do you have a dog? They are unconditional lovers and you have to get out and walk them every day. Come spring, get a real bike. You'll love it.

I don't blame you one bit for deleting that comment. You don't need the reminder of negative people trying to undermine your WOE. I also lost my dad from complications of diabetes and I know it's something I will eventually get. But the longer I keep trying to eat healthy and get off my butt and move, the longer it stays away. Stay strong and keep fighting.

I always delete comments from okthen78...always rude. I'm glad you have found a WOE that keeps your diabetes in check!

I find most of the people on this site are wonderful, helpful and considerate but there always those few trolls who seem to get pleasure from being hurtful and mean. Don't let them get to you, they are dealing with their own problems and hurting other seem to be their way of feeling better.

Thank you all. I really appreciate the kind words. I did have a wonderful dog, Myguy, he passed on Halloween, he was 15 and would still be up each morning to go for a walk. My family and I are toying with getting another one. I might wait till I retire and get a puppy. We have a very timid loving cat right now.

Often people hate what they fear, I think. It can be imperfection, a loss of control, loss of some kind of imagined special status, being wrong (or right but nobody "listens") - I can go on and on. Trolls need to understand that your journey is not their journey and they cannot possibly understand what it's like to be you, me or anyone else for that matter. And vice versa. 99% of people on here are great; sometimes you'll need to delete without reading all of some post that you know is going to make you unhappy. You need never apologize for it, either!

I am so sorry about the diabetes to manage but envious that you went to Australia. It is on my bucket list. I 'd love to hear about the good parts of your Aussie vacation;) I agree with you about negative comments. I am a teacher and I really come down on students who belittle others or talk themselves down.
