LadyinDenim's Journal, 09 August 2016

I included wheat in my diet for seven days straight, and gained weight six of those seven days. To make things worse, there was sugar in the pizza, cornbread, BBQ sauce, buns, and broccoli salad. My daughter had asked me how she can lose weight while including sugar in her diet. My answer has to be, "If you are like me, you can't."

I put on ten pounds in 7 days. I averaged 1350 calories a day this month. This ten pounds is not all fat. How could it be? There are journals and posts where people measure out wheat and sugar and still lose weight or maintain weight.

Not me. It doesn't work for me. Don't tell me I will fail if I deny myself sugar and wheat. I have proven that NOT denying myself causes me to gain weight, even when I maintain the mythical calorie deficit.

Oh girl, you are TELLING MY STORY. If I completely refrain from wheat-based foods and sugar (with the exception of honey in my tea) I will lose like a champ. But in a single weekend of adding in ONE SLICE OF CAKE, and three mornings of coffee with cream and sugar, I gained FOUR POUNDS. All while still staying within 1500 calories. I don't understand it.

Its amazing how fast we can put it on and struggle to take it off...especially as we age. I have seen my scale fluctuate wildly up 5 pounds overnite...yes you are correct it is not fat, it is mostly water, and i can drop 3 pounds overnight when eating mostly protein...once again...it is mostly water. Balance my dear, try about 100 grams of protein, 40-50 grams of fat and under 100 healthy carbs, like veggies, not breads and sugars...and try around the 1400 calorie range...you may have luck with this. :) I am not preaching, as I have been struggling up and down with my last 15 dang pounds...i am only trying to help. the fat seems a bit high, but i feel more satisfied...Good luck!

I agree wheat is our enemy, not only wheat but most grains they also make me feel bad I think it's because so many of our grains have been genetically modified maybe sugar cane has been too. I fear it won't be long before they mess with our fruits and vegetables. For example just look at our tomatoes and then look at the ones from years ago (I don't remember what their called).

I avoid GMOs for the most part. When I quit GMOs in 2010, I dropped 25 lb because HFCS is GMO, along with beet sugar and fast food. I learned to cook at home and read labels. That was pretty painless. Ditching organic cane sugar and organic wheat flour makes me whine a little.

Oh girl you are telling my story too! It's so easy to think, 'well a little -- how bad can it be?' Well, it sets me back. Then it takes a whole long road back to get back into the groove. You're on it though, Lady! We're going to reign in those horses and get the wagon back on track!

I just started a diet in line with what lulani suggests and i feel soooo much better. In one week i have lost inches and pounds. I was on nutrisysyem for 4 months and only lost weight the first month but i was hungry and miserable the entire time. I knew my body needed more protein. I have always felt better with lots of protein at every meal so i found the primal diet. Plenty of protein, loads of veggies and no bread/pasta/processed carbs. The key seems to be lowering our intake of processed carbs. With a higher protein and fat diet i feel more physically and emotionally stable all day. I love it! All this to say that i can relate and there are ways to lose weight/fat and feel better in the process. Best of luck on your journey!

Same here...'just a little' is the same as a buttload for me. My sushi experiments both ballooned me up, and each time I had a grand total of *maybe* 1 cup of cold white rice. Grains are off the table for the foreseeable future, and sugar is a rarely if ever event, forever.

You put on water weight in the form of glucose. None of that weight was fat as you cannot gain it without an energy surplus. Water weight is quickly gained when reintroducing carbs. This is not a bad thing.

If you were following a low carb diet then I agree with Diablo360x. Your body will try to replenish its glycogen (stored glucose) stores first. With each gram of glycogen comes up to 4 grams of water. What you are experiencing is the reversal of the initial weight loss when you went low carb, which btw, was water. Go back to strict low carb and it will come back off in a few days as your glycogen decreases again.

I had to learn to stay away from sugar and wheat. I do a decent job since I know they are my enemies. Nevertheless, I still enjoy desserts on "a" cheat day (not days). This decession keeps me from having my mind screwed with over and over again with the issue of the scale, water-weight, quick losses and gains. I've been at it for a bit over two years, lost 41 lbs, went from 22% body fat to 10-11%. I know what works for me, and consequentially due to tremendous research and weeding out junk science claims, think will work for most. Hang in there. You're learning what doesn't work, which in the long-run is an added blessing. The discovery is a huge part of the process.

Too much wheat and dairy=weight gain for me. It's obvious not everyone gains or loses the same. That 10 pounds isn't fat. Agree with Diablo and CatHerder. BTW: You look great in your new pic; youthful and refreshed. Focus on what you know YOUR body responds to well or what it doesn't responds to well.
