LOW CARB GURUS, I NEED ADVICE: I really took it up a notch.I had my 1st work out with a personal trainer and my ass is kicked.BUT,that's what I wanted.I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. I could only go so far on my own.He set me up with a nice schedule of what to do when and that's what I wanted. But, here my question,he told me to up my carbs and I'm sooo not ok with that bc I'm scared it will stall me.He said I need more carbs to build more muscle yada yada but Im not trying to get hulked up I said and he went on to explain how I should do 100 net carbs a day. 1st off, I'm at like 27-35 net a day and anytime I add stuff it stalls me, I take it down a notch then add it back in. I'm barely on the carb ladder that has yogurt and melon and about to up it to 35 net a day. If I up like this guy says, aren't I going to ef it up? I'm totally ok even going to 40 net carbs but baby steps..I know how my body reacts and I cant just add in bananas and oatmeal and be ok with it. He called it reverse diet. like reversing what I'm doing. SO here's what I'm planning and I need some help and opinions. I plan to continue to what I'm doing. I'm at the berry/nut level and Im adding melons, cherries and Greek yogurt this week, then stay there for a few weeks to see how it goes then slowing add the tomato juice/cottage cheese then legumes afterwards.. that puts me around 45-50 net carbs in 2 months or so..I've moved forward to the melon/yogurt level before but backed off bc I over did it. I'm sure Im over thinking this but Im at the point where I failed last time I did low carbs and I just don't want to lose my momentum. sorry being so annoying LOL ..

Not annoying at all. My trainer said I should eat more protein to build muscle. But keep in mind our body and daily activities are probably completely different.... It sounds like this guy knows his stuff. You/we have to remember it's a life style change so if it takes a set back it might be worth it to understand your body even more and what if it works for the better after all. I think you should listen to him and let me know if it works :) GL

I went through something similar when I joined a kickboxing gym that came with nutrition advice. Up the protein, up the carbs, lower the fat. I tried it, just to see. I did ok. I was working out hard 45 min/day either kickboxing or weight training. I personally feel I could have had better results had I stuck with low carb. Sometimes people are well meaning and really convincing, but I've never been like anybody else due to my PCOS. I didn't get and stay fat from 11 years old and on because my body reacted like everyone else's. I listened, I tried, I went back to what I know works for me. You may have to try the same thing to learn what works and what doesn't, or you may already have a pretty good idea!

If it were me I would continue lc and up it a little at a time maybe. I think the most important indicator is how you feel. I feel great with low carb and when I do up my carb intake the cravings come back and I want MORE! Very hard for me to control portions and makes me hungry, 2 issues I don't have when I eat low carb

No advice on the low carbs, not my area. Good for you going to work with the trainer and developing a plan of action for working out.

I would stick with low carb whatever you have been doing to loose weight (keep you in Ketosis) and control hunger cravings. I do heavy lifting and light cardo and I have zero issue loosing weight and getting my A** kicked at the gym. I would only up your protein intake and keep carbs very low like 23-30gr (Im at 15gr total carbs)O. I as a medical professional I respectfully disagree with your trainer he likely cant articulate the LCHF diet or lifestyle....

I am usually at the 20-30 net carb range. And I do well there able to eat veggies etc NP I do not do much fruit at this point too often. Some spike my carbs but the black raspberries in moderation were fine as they are high fiber.

STICK WITH YOUR PLAN! trainers and bodybuilders will Always saying eat carbs...do not succumb. I am building muscle and losing fat so it is possible to do on your ketogenic program - if you eat carbs, you will burn sugar not fat. Perhaps eat a tiny bit more protein but it is about your percentages, too. Keep protein at 30% of macros, and carbs around 10-12% and 60-65% healthy fats. This is my story and I am sticking to it!

If your WOE (LCHF/Atkins/Keto) is more important to you then gains in the gym, then you need to put that first, otherwise put what's most important first and then fold and bend the other decisions around it. For me, it's all about the Keto WOE. I'm striving to prove my 'carbs are a daily requirement'' co-workers wrong by eating Keto, hitting the gym AND realizing gains. So far it's working. Sure, eating LCHF may only take you so far but it doesn't sound like you want to 'hulk' things up. Stick with what's going to get you to your goal.

also it's a question of combinations, it's best to mix meats with veggies than carbs, if you need to eat carbs mix them with green veggies and not meat proteins for example. carbs are generally slow sugars so good to last through out the day and through out your exercise routine. I am also a low carb diet person, but if for some reason you need to up your intake, have them carbs in the morning which you will burn during the day and none at night.

I would agree ,, this guy does not know any better because in his training the 5 Minutes he spent on nutrition that what he was taught . I agree with HCB and Frosty. You most certainly can build muscle and work out while being fat adapted . ask Jimmy Moore if you don't know who Jimmy is just google him .

I was on a LCHF diet until I started working out. I found that I could not go at a high intensity for a full hour. I then went on a moderate car diet, ~100 net carbs per day and found I had a great improvement. The answer really depends on what your goals are. If you are happy where you are at fitness wise then you should stay LCHF. You will still build fitness but the high intensity stuff might be challenging. Also you will probably not add much muscle but will tone and firm up what you do have. I also agree that you should up your protein.

Thought of something, does this trainer have nutrition training? Is he a registered dietician? Most have little to no training just like doctors.

Ya, i seriously don't think he has any nutrition training and my insides tell me to stick with what works for me. I've tried low fat, counting calories, and all that and the only diet that has ever worked for me is low carb. I had a personal trainer who i paid over 1000. once and I only lost 17 lbs in 6 months following his plan. I had a plan to up the carbs at my own pace and I plan to stick with it. The only exception I'm willing to make is protein powder but Ill use flax or almond milk.I honestly like the way I eat and its becoming a lifestyle and all though I'm grateful for the guidance at the gym, I'm annoyed I let him put doubts in my head..
