So excited!!! I just cut the first asparagus from my garden!!! I haven't even cleaned out the bed yet, it's a mess! Will have a quick dinner with steamed asparagus, potatoes and a thin steak.

It has warmed up in the 60's by Sunday closer to 80. Really want to work on the yard but will paint. It's pretty wet out there.

The first Friday of the month is doughnut day, the company brings in boxes of doughnuts, this was a bit funny. I was in the break room getting coffee and refilling my water walked by the center counter full of doughnuts. One of the 3 women (I don't know them just see them on the floor) standing there asked if I was just going to walk by the doughnuts??? I said yes. They could not believe anyone would pass up a doughnut! and asked why. Told them that I eat very little sugar and was not worth it to me to eat a doughnut and have a stomach ache from all the sugar.

They were mystified and then remembered someone they knew who had given up sugar and had been trying to convince them to do the same because she felt so much better. Told them I had lost 60 pounds and I also felt so much better, so it was very easy to walk by that counter full of doughnuts. Told them they should try it. 2 of them definitely could benefit by losing more than a few pounds. I left them chatting since I had to get back to my desk.

You are doing so well with maintaining your weight, good for you. I could never kick sugar out of my life.

I still eat some sugar, not much. A doughnut is simply overkill! Occasional chocolate, a teaspoon of sugar in my tea, a splurge on ice cream now and then, had hot chocolate with 1/2 decaf coffee on my way home last night I was freezing.

I've never grown asparagus! I want to learn. It's my new food. I've eaten it here and there, but never really had it on a regular basis. This year, I am craving it. Congrat's on your success in your garden!

That is awesome that you walked right by. :) I have also been eating very low sugar, getting very used to it now as well. Its getting easier and easier to just say no even though others around me are eating it. Way to go! Jealous of your asparagus...I just started a garden and cant wait to get my first bounty!

That's crazy you have asparagus already! Kudos to you on bypassing the donuts. They make my stomach hurt too, but I still drool when I see them. lol

That's one veggie I've never grown. Probably because he doesn't like it.

Wholefoodnut, sounds like you're passing the torch to those around you! Well done! And I wish I were tasting your fresh picked garden veggies with you. Hubby and I just started a nice raised keyhole garden a couple days ago, just waiting for my next day off to plant it. Kudos for enjoy the finer things in life. Doughnuts really don't mean a thing when you're feeling well and enjoying real life, real food and the joy of growing it!

Jill, it takes several years to get a bed established. I need to move mine as it's getting overrun by the raspberries. I can't control either one at this point well until the asparagus is moved. I'm going to build a raised bed for asparagus later in the spring and once they stop producing move some of the roots. That will give them a chance to groe their pretty ferns over the summer and also get the roots in better soil.

Early for the asparagus here, last year it was toward the end of may, I cleaned the bed out in early May. it tasted so good compared to the store ones I've been eating. Also had my little steak with a bit of butter added to the grill pan after the steak and some fresh cut chopped garlic chives cooked in the butter for a couple minutes, scooped this on the steak. YUM. It's really good with chives and fresh tarragon, that isn't up enough to cut yet.

I should have not sat down to eat dinner. Getting nothing done...body and brain have said take the night off.

That's disgusting. I'm waiting for the ice to come off the lake. :) Love asparagus. Re: donut day. I knew a guy who would go to work on donut day and ask his friend (who would have 3 or 4) if he'd mind putting his empty plate on his desk when he was done. The crumbs on the plate kept people off his back.

I have to look into growing asparagus. I'd love to try. I'll start small, if possible. I have a raised bed planter that needs to be used. I just have no idea how to plant it, how much room it takes, what it looks like growing--I don't know anything. It sounds like fun to try, though :)

NM LOVE IT!!!!!

Jill my new bed will be 4 x 8 that's easy to cut the wood for and matches the other 3 I have. It should produce more because my yard soil is so poor. I couldn't even grow decent tomatoes until I built my beds last year with a mix of top soil and composted manure. My current bed is about the same size but the yields are spotty and not as much as it should be. For just me even now it's plenty. You let them grow for at least a season, 2 is better, they have tall fernlike plants that get little ball like seeds in the fall. When they turn brown in late fall you cut them down, we had weird weather last fall and I never cut mine, that's why I have a mess. Then each year you let them grow after the spears get tough, that way they can build up nutrients in their roots to produce the next year.

When do you plant or can you plant anytime? Is it a cold, warm or both? How do you start growing it and how long does it take before it is ready to pick? I don't know anything about it, but I really would love to try. I love doing new things. I'm going to try to make something with "Leeks" this weekend. Originally, I was going to make potato and leek soup, but potatoes have too many calories. I don't ever remember having leeks, so I want to try them (and I already bought them).

Start them in the spring as early as you can. That way they have a chance to grow over the summer and send nutrients to the roots to tied them over the winter and help their early spring start. You should not cut the spears the first spring after you plant them just let them grow. you can cut some the following spring but many will be spindly and tough so choose the ones that look good. After that cut as you wish and cut until they get tough or shoot up really spindly and tall. You will get some that do that and others that are still tender. You will know when to quit. Leeks are really good. Make sure you wash them well and between the leaves you will find embedded dirt. So peel off the leaves (you can still use them) just so you can get all the dirt and sand.

It sounds like it takes 2-3 years before you can actually get good asparagus. Do you throw the others away? What do you eat with leeks? Do you eat them plain? I know I sound stupid, but I've never had them. I don't want to eat them with potatoes because I am being nutso about my calories. They don't sound like something I would put in a salad. You are going to laugh at me, but there are so many things I see in the produce aisle that I've never had, but want to try. I have no idea what they are. I've never had a turnip. I've had a "rutabaga" in mashed potatoes, but I'm trying to think of what else or how else to eat one.

We're actually trying turnips, parsnips and eggplant this week for the first time. I know you can mash parsnips, not sure about the rest yet, will have to research. Also going to try uglii fruit. Can't wait.

Msbuggirl--let me know how you cook them--prepare them. I love eggplant, but I don't remember having turnips or parsnips.
