Good day my FS friends! I almost forgot about this tip because it has become so engrained in my rituals I dont even give it much thought.

I wanted to list the things that I think contributed to me meeting my weight loss goals in hopes that it may help someone else. And please remember, this is what has worked for ME, your mileage will vary. I will post one tip per weekday.

Tip 19 of 25

Coconut Oil. Eat it, drink it, rub it on yourself, and love every minute of it! Coconut oil is a medium chain triglyceride (MCT) and cannot be stored as fat in your body. When you consume coconut oil your body must produce keytones in order to utilize the energy. Do you know what keytones are used for? Burning fat! When you go on a very low carb diet or fast for several hours (usually 6-8 hours) your body must burn fat since the supply of sugar is below what is required to function. Keytones are what your body uses to deliver fat based energy to your muscles and organs. When keytones are in your blood stream you are burning fat. Eating coconut oil forces your body to produce these keytones which in turn helps you utilize fat for energy. Some things I like to do with my coconut oil: Add a TBS or more to each cup of coffee in the morning. I also like to make fat bombs (google it!!). And I use it as a skin moisturizer and lip balm. When purchasing coconut oil always look for non-refined organic expeller pressed varieties. Go easy on it at first, as it can cause your stomach to feel queasy if you over-consume before your gut has had a chance to get accustomed to it. I typically take about 2-3 tablespoons per day in my coffee.

Have a great day everyone!

Brent that is wonderful information. I have been told to use coconut oil and I do when I cook stuff but I have asked and asked and casually googled it and never knew why it was good for us. Thank you again for providing great information.

Re: add a TBSP to each cup of morning... I suggest you use a blender. It floats. Not as fun as it sounds.

When I was first told about CO I looked at the label and freaked OUT but it truly did lower my cholesterol and help with other things. I esp like to do an oil pulling when I feel funky. Should probably go do one now. I have a tbs every morning in my coffee too. Great way to start the day.

I love coconut oil. I cook with it, make fat bombs/BPC, moisturizer, lip balm, make-up remover, lube (overshare?)....tons of uses.

I've heard so much on here about coconut oil but have resisted getting any. But you've pushed me past my resistance point, I will have to give it a try. It's been a while since I've done fasting, will do that with the coconut oil and we'll see what happens. Where do you get it, in the grocery store?

I have two brands at home. Unfortunately the one I use for cooking is not the best grade. But the one I use for cosmetic purposes is the organic one. I may have to ditch that not so pure quality one.

Coconut oil contains MCT (mid chain triglycerides), but it is not entirely made up of MCT. It is about 1/10 or less MCT's. You can buy MCT that comes from coconut oil to get that major ketosis effect. That being said, I am nuts about Coconut oil, coconut milk, coconut cream, coconut flakes, and of course, MCT oil! It is also great for cooking because it has a higher temperature tolerance (about 500 deg F) before it breaks down.

You can get coconut oil in most grocery stores. We have a small country grocery store and when i went in last time they had stocked 3 more brands. Now I have 5 brands to choose from. I usually get the Central Market or Spectrum brand. The spectrum one almost has no smell, the Central Market one smells delicious, like an Almond Joy. It's good stuff! I've enjoyed everyone's comments today. Thanks for making this journal more interesting.

Just a little more data for you to consider. Since I can't paste links here, let me say it this way..... Google 'coconut oil vs EVOO' and you will see a hit from the Cleveland Clinic. Very good article comparing the 2.

If you love coconut like I love coconut (YUM!!), you'll go nuts (sorry for the pun) over Philosophie's "Green Dream Coconut Butter"! It's a blend of powdered superfoods like spirulina, organic coconut butter, maple syrup, and vanilla bean powder! It's to die for!!

Hey, Draglist. I also follow an IF protocol (but it usually ends up being closer to 18:6, by the time I get around to eating). It has done wonders for my auto-immune disease! It really gives your digestive tract time to heal and I'm floored at the level of energy & mental alertness I have when fasting! Did you ever see that Dr. Michael Mosley documentary on PBS about fasting? I recommend it if you haven't seen it. Fascinating stuff. I do it mostly for the rest to my digestive system, the lower IGF-1 levels (cancer prevention) and the neuroprotective benefits. As it turns out, I had inadvertently been doing it for almost a year without even knowing anything about it because I felt like my system just needed a rest from the constant bombardment of antigens! After close to two years, I now find I don't even have food cravings AT ALL until "feeding time" rolls around!

Almost any grocery store these days. Watch for sales, but it's the bomb. (Ooh, I'm old.)

If you have a Trader Joe's near you Lizevans1, they carry coconut oil.
