hollipop's Journal, 08 July 2014

So, I was reading another journal when I made a big discovery and wanted to share it with ya'll...
I have felt for awhile that I would love to make the change and eat more clean, but I couldn't because my family is fighting me tooth and nail. My boys (hubby included) love their junk food and box dinners. I thought this was my biggest argument against the change. Then I came to another realization. My biggest personal enemy for clean eating is I love the convenience of frozen dinners. I buy the "healthy" ones, but I know it would be better if I just made the food myself. My argument has been "I don't have the time." When I really think about it, what activity would I actually be cutting in to? Sitting on my butt reading or watching t.v.? Maybe cooking WOULD help me lose weight! I would be eating better and moving more. Hmm...definitely something to consider. Thinking I will need to change my evening and weekend schedules around.
On another note, I cheated last night, but it was worth it and it will be my splurge for the week. My dad has been talking about how great this little food place is--no eating in, just an outside window to order at and picnic tables to eat on outside. My mom and sis had tried it and raved about it. Last night, I had the opportunity to try it, and it was definitely worth the splurge! Juiciest hamburger I've had in a long time!! I decided it was okay, I will just eat alot healthier the rest of the week.
Anyway, so that is my epiphany and confession for the day. Hope ya'll have a great one! :)

I eat hamburgers but I skip the bread, cheese & fries. I eat the hamburger wrapped in lettuce. Eat real food as much as you can & I agree it's a lifestyle change. It's very easy to rely on boxed food. Good luck with your family. Hopefully over time they will change their eating habits as well. The future of their health depends on it. Maybe you can cook together as a family?

One difference you'll notice is how much better food tastes when cooking fresh. Allrecipes.com has tons of good, healthy and quick recipes.

I try to cook every night, but I typically incorporate some kind of meal helper as it saves time. Just need to get out of the habit!

I'll be honest...I would rather have a really good hamburger over any other food! The flavor... the texture... the AROMA! yum-yum-yum. As far as cooking food at home, it's always best to plan a day or so ahead to take advantage of your "down time"and prep what you can ahead of time.

Great insight and so true! Wish more people would realize this.

Back when I was a single mom of toddlers, I did a LOT of cooking on Sundays. I work full time and commute two hours a day, so by the time I picked up the kids from daycare, fed them, and bathed them, it was bed time. So I got pretty creative with meals that I could cook Sundays, freeze in those foil pan things (or just put in the fridge), and throw in the oven as soon as I got home from work. Or I would just grill a bunch of meat on Sundays and have a salad ready or throw a veggie in the microwave when I got home. Or the blessed crock pot meals. I LOVE the crock pot!! I have more time now (remarried and kids are teens and more self sufficient), but I still fry a couple pounds of bacon on Sunday and maybe some chicken breasts or whatnot since I'm on Atkins. Plus, since no one ever wants to help, I get a couple hours of peace and quiet in the kitchen on Sundays!! But you're right, cooking doesn't have to take THAT much time. Most of my meals are 30 minutes or less.
