For those of you on any type of low carb diet, what have you learned from your own experience about calories? Not the balance of calories/exercise, but what happens when you eat more calories and keep your carbs very low? Do you lose? dietdoctor.com claims that calories have no negative effect if you are keeping carbs super low. Others claim that calories and carbs matter. I'd like to hear what you have learned.

I'm really feeling good now, I've been sleeping well, and a lot, which is unusual for me. 10 hours each of the past two nights. That's not just unusual, it's unheard of. I guess my body needs it, I usually sleep around 7 hours. I'm glad that need hit on the weekend. I have the whole day ahead of me, my lunch plans just canceled. What shall I do?

Although I am not doing the real low-carb food plan like you, I find the more protein and fiber I get, the better - but I also keep the calories and fats in a lower range. SO I guess it is important to keep track of calories and eat more protein than you think you need.

I think that if your 100 pounds to lose, you don't have to worry about calories with low carb because the amount of protein you are eating will fill you up and in turn you will lose weight. People with a much smaller amount of weight to lose may need to count calories because it's harder to get the weight off at lower weights. But many things can factor in to weight loss such as a persons age, sex, activity levels, genetics etc. So the answer to your question is that it differs from person to person. If you can lose without tracking calories, than do it. If you find it doesn't work, than track them. Whatever works best for you.

by low carbs are you talking about all carbs. fruits and some veggies have carbs in them. Are you sugar free as well? All of that are factors for ME. Every BODY is different. My body does poorly with bread, pasta, rice, flour, etc... I also have to take into account the amount of sugar i'm eating even natural sugar lessens my weight loss. just food for thought. :-) i agree with playing it by ear. if you continue to lose weight without tracking, do that ... if you plateau, track and see what changed or what needs to change.

I just wanted to hear what is working for other people, I know we are all different, and I appreciate your responses. I've found that I can cut carbs way down and increase fat to keep from getting hungry, but if I eat when I'm not hungry, I won't lose weight, even if it is zero carb food. I get almost all of my carbs from vegetables and trace amounts from other foods. I'm totally sugar free, mostly fruit free, and the only dairy is the very high fat kind. I'm dropping like crazy now with only eating when I'm hungry, usually 2-3 meals with nothing in-between. I've decided to allow wine on Friday and Saturday, but avoid it during the rest of the week. It certainly bumps up my caloric intake and my carbs somewhat.

Looks like your method is working well. For me I am trying to keeps carbs below 25 and calories around 1400. Years ago when I first did Atkins I did not count calories at all but I did only eat when hungry, and stopped when full, even if plate was not empty.

I think you're doing wonderfully well. I'm a bit of a wino myself and didn't realize how many calories was in a glass of red wine till I had three glasses on Saturday and had to add 350 calories for them. I knew how many carbs but never realized the number of calories. So I think I'm with you from now on, wine only on weekends, unless its my Birthday or St Patrick's day, same day BTW, then all bets are off
